After reading this book, I was surprised I hadn't previously taken notice of the "Red Millionaire," Willi Munzenberg. Sean McMeekin brings to light one of the most colorful characters of the International Communist movement, and the most successful member of Lenin's circle of old Bolshevik friends to remain independent of Moscow's direct control.Willi Munzenberg (1889-1940), according to McMeekin, was a man of many opposing virtues and vices, and his rollercoaster career in the Party reflected these contrary impulses. His initial Communist ideals were unquestionable; he related intimately with the worker class and was trusted by nearly all those around him; he was creative, articulate, undeniably intelligent. At the same time, he was an egotist, spendthrift, confidence man, and publicity hound. Munzenberg never questioned his own ability or ideas, and failure after failure in his career failed to change this. In retrospect, many of his projects glorified their author rather than the Party he represented to the West. By the time of his untoward death in 1940, the reader feels that the international Communist cause may have been better off had they found a less interesting and more pedestrian spokesperson.Overall, the Red Millionaire is an excellent read, engagingly written and filled with detailed psychological portraits of many of the important Communists after WWI. This book is a breath of fresh air compared to the many impenetrable texts describing the same period. I highly recommend this book for anyone else interested in Communist history and the interwar period in which Munzenberg operated. I give it a 5 out of 5 stars.

No matter how many books about Soviet espionage you read, there always seems to be more to know. Among agents, CPUSA members, and fellow-travelers, the USA was thoroughly infiltrated. As one Soviet spymaster noted: "Even in Weimar, we never had it this good."

In the best biographies, the writers get inside the skin of their subjects without feeling overly uncomfortable. Where this is not the case, the biographer can end up hating or despising him, which generally makes for a tiresome reading experience. When the bias shows through too clearly, this inevitably calls forth resistance on the part of the reader. What we have here is a thoroughly researched life of a figure the author at the very least disapproves of.McMeekin has scoured archives far and wide, even consulting Herbert Wehner's unpublished memoirs. He has certainly dug deeply, gaining access to police files which throw remarkable light on Münzenberg's activities in Swiss exile during World War I. After that, Münzenberg seems to have concentrated less on revolutionary activity and turned much more decisively towards profiteering in the early 1920s, scamming the Soviet government or knowingly employing those who did.McMeekin professes some surprise that Münzenberg's involvement in Soviet agriculture, real estate and heavy industry has attracted rather less attention than his film ventures. For McMeekin, Münzenberg was a wheeler-dealer, not an ideologue, and that may well be true. It is a fatal flaw, however, when a historian has an ax to grind, and the more one reads, the more annoying the sound gets. Long before the end it starts to grate on the ears. Münzenberg is said to have habitually grabbed credit where none is due (pg. 180) and to have been disingenuous (pg. 182). His whole film empire was based on a lie. (pg. 184) "Münzenberg could blame whomever he wanted for his failures, but the fact remained that he simply was not very good at distributing or promoting films to broad audiences." (pg. 185) Typically he masked his incompetence with bravado. "Here, then, was the Münzenberg model of movie moguldom. Let more talented individuals make the films. Get other, cash-richer institutions to pay for them, and, if necessary, distribute them. But make sure to take all the credit for any box-office successes." (pg. 191) On the whole, it sounds rather like he would have fit into Hollywood without the slightest problem.McMeekin ignores the truism that to get money it helps to have – or seem to have – money already. Undeniably, Münzenberg lived well, but he flaunted it at least in part so that donors, actual and potential, would have confidence in him. In the biographer's eyes, though, he is little more than a swindler.When he gets to the 1930s, McMeekin does admit that he was a talented, spellbinding orator, whose propaganda was effective in gaining seats for the KPD in the elections of 1930. On the other hand, his political acumen was faulty; he fully supported Stalin's line of denouncing social democrats as "social fascists," thus fatally splitting the left.A "familiar tactic of dissembling" is the way he describes Münzenberg's local cooperation with the SPD in Berlin while simultaneously toeing the party line and denouncing such cooperation in the pages of Inprecorr, the Comintern's "turgid official news bulletin" which was "read by few people outside the party bureaucracy." (pg. 248) One could conceivably praise Münzenberg for finding a way to do the right thing while at the same time protecting himself, instead of denouncing him for knowing how to survive by manipulating the system. What would McMeekin, writing at a comfortable distance in time and space, rather he have done – follow the party line (which he knew to be wrong) or denounce it (which he knew to be suicidal)? Yes, Münzenberg "watched his back" – is McMeekin suggesting that he shouldn't have?Though there had long been tensions with Moscow, even after his expulsion from the KPD Münzenberg refrained from denouncing the Soviet Union or its leader. "I hold to the place that I have taken since 1906 at the side of Karl Liebknecht, […] Rosa Luxemburg, Clara Zetkin, and […] Lenin." (pg. 299f.) He foolishly believed he could persuade Moscow to his point of view from outside, when he had failed to do so from inside. Only when the USSR participated in the dismemberment of Poland did he finally proclaim: "socialist Russia is no more." (pg. 302)Like many others, he dithered too long and was caught up in the Nazi conquest of France. He disappeared in June 1940 while heading towards the Swiss border, probably the victim of an NKVD hit squad. His decomposed body was found hanging from a tree in a forest four months later.

About the Author

Arthur Beiser, a native of New York City, received B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in physics from New York University, where he later served as Associate Professor of Physics. He then was a Senior Research Scientist at the Lamont Geo- logical Observatory of Columbia University. His research interests were chiefly in cosmic rays and in magnetohydrodynamics as applied to geophysics and astrophys- ics. In addition to theoretical work, he participated in a cosmic-ray expedition to an Alaskan peak and directed a search for magnetohydrodynamic waves from space in various Pacific locations. A Fellow of The Explorers Club, Dr. Beiser was the first chairman of its Committee on Space Exploration. He is the author or coauthor of 36 books, mostly college texts on physics and mathematics, 14 of which have been translated into a total of 27 languages. Two of his books are on sailing, The Proper Yacht and The Sailor’s World. Figure 13-21 is a photograph of Dr. Beiser at the helm of his 58-ft sloop; he and his wife Germaine have sailed over 150,000 miles, includ- ing two Atlantic crossings and a rounding of Cape Horn. Germaine Beiser, who has degrees in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and New York University, is the author or coauthor of seven books on various aspects of physics and has contributed to The Physical Universe. For a number of years she was the editor of a cruising guide to the Adriatic Sea.

It's hard to imagine, but Schaum's Outlines (SO) have been around for over 60 years. I bought my first one in (Analytical Geometry-no longer taught as a separate subject) in 1961. Initially they only covered the introductory core subjects in math and physics. As they became more popular, the number of subjects covered increased and now envelope most curriculum from the colleges of business, finance, language, and the arts. SOs are for students who are serious about learning the subject and are also using a subject-matter text book. You learn physics by doing problems. The outline books are not for someone who wants to cover the subject in a cursory manner and only have a superficial understanding of the subject, or considers themself a dummy.In general, all of SOs science and math outlines usually follow a logical sequence of material in a chapter format that is typical of a high school or college text book. This SO on "Applied Physics" is a little bit different in that no one physics book or course would cover all of this material. The book's problems are oriented to an introductory, high school level course in physics with no real discussion of the theory or principles involved. You definitely need a physics text book (or prior familiarity) to understand the origin of these formulas. Some sections are a bit dated; I doubt if most school system discuss how simple machines (pulley systems), spherical optics and lenses work; while other sections deal with advanced subjects such as elasticity, kinetic theory of matter and solid state physics.Typically 15-25 solved problems for the 35 different sections; followed by many other problems with answers only. No calculus required, trig table, constants and conversion factors are supplied. All solution techniques/methodologies are pretty much formula plugging solutions. If you are taking an AP high school physics course, the SO, "College Physics Outline" is more appropriate. In helping many high school/college students, I have discovered that most high school science/math teachers have never heard of Schaum's Outline (amazing) and today's bookstore typically don't carry a good selection of SOs. So you're better off searching through the Amazon offerings and ordering it that way.

This is one of the most valuable source books ever! A third generation family member is now using it for his education in physic.Schaum's Outlines, and this one as well, have always been the student and teacher's best friend. They simplify otherwise difficult subject material.M M. Brown

Purchased from Amazon with their usual efficiency and keen price. This book is up to Schaum's usual helpful standard. A good spread of topics that would suit a HIgh School student, with numerous worked examples for the puzzled and desperate! I would recommended the companion "3,000 solved questions" as well, especially if more background is needed in the early tertiary stages.

So far I've had success with this book as a supplement to my school textbook. At the level of most introductory physics courses, the students need to have problems explained to them, and then given enough to solve themselves that they master the idea. This is exactly what this workbook (note: not *textbook*) provides.It derives the equations you'll use (sometimes making you do it as a guided exercise), and then puts them to use.

About the Author

Boris Megorsky born in Leningrad, USSR, in 1978. Lives in St. Petersburg, Russia with his beloved family. Made his Ph.D. in Political Science, works in Human Resources but his true passion has always been military history. As a scholar he specializes in everyday life of the Russian army, its uniforms, tactics and siege warfare of the Great Northern war period. Author of three books – “Peter the Great’s Revanche” (2016) and “Sieges and Assaults of the Great Northern war” (2017) in Russian and “Russian Forces of the Great Northern War” (2018) with Helion & Company. As a re-enactor he is member and “sergeant” of “Preobrazhensky Life Guard regiment, 1709” - Russia’s leading reenactment society of the early 1700s. His passion in miniatures make him paying great attention to details both in research and in re-constructions, be it reenactors kit or graphical illustration consulted by him. He counsels films, museum and publishing projects, miniature manufacturers and artists.

This book is exactly what I was hoping for. My wife and I adopted a pregnant mustang last summer and had a need to know more about foaling than we did. We do now! We live in a very rural area of Arizona and for us there just are no vets a simple phone call away. This book doesn't assume that you will have a vet on hand for the birth. What it does do is get into all of the details such as what should happen, what could go wrong, and what to do if something does go wrong. It also covers care of the foal and the mare after the birth. We are 100% satisfied with this book!

Even though I’m a lifelong horse woman, having our own foal is a new experience. I want to raise the baby right.

While the author provided good basics about foaling out a mare I found some of her tips to be inaccurate. The author seemed to be very rigid in her opinions and I think that some of what she suggested are outdated methods.For the beginner breeder this is a great book to start with.

I bought a lot of books in anticipation of my first foal being born. This one is BY FAR the best one I've come across. It is now kept safely with my foaling kit to have as a quick referral. A must buy in my opinion!

I am a very experienced equestrian, with my mare expecting her second (my first) foal. I am quite familiar with the breeding/foaling/beyond process, but this will be my first time foaling out and raising my own personal foal.Clear, concise book that gets to the point - has excellent pictures and references and is clearly written by a human with opinions and personal experience. This book is more like talking to a good friend or breeding expert in person, as opposed to reading a college curriculum book. It has great checklists and helpful tips and hints, as the author clearly includes the mare's (and foal) comfort level and things that could overall just make her more comfortable through the process of late term/foaling/new mommihood.

The New Studies in Biblical Theology (NSBT) tackles the beloved Book of Jonah in this entry by Daniel Timmer. There’s really not a dud that I’ve seen in this series. Many attribute this consistent quality to the editorship of revered scholar D. A. Carson. I suspect that along with careful selection of contributors is responsible for the prestige of the series. If you value D. A. Carson as many do, you should know that he calls this volume by Timmer “a book to cherish”.The subtitle accurately outlines what you will find between these covers: “mission, salvation, and spirituality in the book of Jonah”. In fact, chapters one and two take mission and conversion/spirituality in Jonah and relates it to the entire biblical corpus.Chapters 3-6 take Jonah chapter by chapter drawing out its theology and again tracing the themes mentioned earlier. At times, the author is quite strict about the theology that can legitimately be mined here, perhaps overly so. Still, there are loads of great theological introspection for this familiar story. The concluding chapter effectively ties it all together.Mark this down as another entry in this winning series!

Daniel Timmer's contribution to the New Studies In biblical Theology is a worthy addition. His exploration of Jonah is as thorough as one will find. While this is NOT a commentary on Jonah (i.e. verse by verse) it out does most of the commentaries out there. This is a wonderful example of Biblical Theology, with Timmer exploring topics such as mission, spirituality, conversion and of course the place of Christ in Jonah. Timmer skillfully ties this book into the wider corpus of sin, judgment, the day of the Lord and the gospel. Oh how narrow and shallow is our sunday school treatment of Jonah!Highly Recommended.

I can still picture the flannel-graph; a paper whale swallowing a paper man against the light blue background. The story of Jonah and the whale seems to be a favorite among children's Sunday school Bible stories. My Children's Story Bible also told the story in a cartoon fashion. They both had the same moral: obey God or a fish will eat you. I think has contributed to more my apprehension of deep waters more than learning to fear the Lord.As I've grown, I've found the book of Jonah more intriguing. I've learned that this story is less about a fish and obeying God and more about God's concern for the nations and the prejudice of Jonah. But, what does Jonah have to do with Christ? How should Christians read this tale of this Jewish prophet?InterVarsity Press has just recently published its latest volume in the series, New Studies in Biblical Theology. I have enjoyed this series for a long time (Stephen Dempster's Dominion and Dynasty has proved my favorite so far) and I was very excited to read this latest addition. A Gracious and Compassionate God: Mission, Salvation and Spirituality in the book of Jonah by Daniel C. Timmer seeks to explore the book of Jonah in a fresh way.Given my background in flannel-fish-tales I was very interested in this new title. Dr. Timmer sees this book as an exploration of God's grace. "Jonah centres on the grand theme of the Bible: the manifestation of God's unmerited grace to those who have sinned against him" (17). This plays out in each character and the narrative as it develops. "The author develop this in all of the main characters as God's grace affects the lives of the sailors, of Jonah and of the Ninevites, but the clearest description of God's character in the book appears in the application to Nineveh of Exodus 34:6-7, where God's great mercy toward rebellious Israel first comes gloriously into view" (17). He explores this book chapter by chapter using the rubric of mission, salvation and spirituality. Additionally, he explores issues concerning the promise to Abraham and its fulfillment in Christ.As I have matured in my understanding of Scripture I find canonical expositions helpful. It is important to understand an book of Bible in its final, "canonical" form. What is this book's role in the larger canon? What does this book contribute to the overall canon and what themes does it emphasis? Timmer seeks to answer these types of questions and I found that helpful in my understanding of Jonah.For the most part I found this a helpful study in the book of Jonah. However, I felt that this work was more focused on the subjects of mission, salvation and spirituality than a study of Jonah. When I first picked up the book and read the introduction and conclusion I felt as though I were reading a different book not at all concerned with a study of Jonah. Perhaps, I have not read closely enough; it is entirely possible that I misunderstood the books purpose.I would not recommend this book for beginners in Old Testament studies or Biblical Theology. It is not an extremely technical book, but I did find it very helpful to be familiar with themes of the Old and New Testaments. Overall, this is a helpful contribution to Old Testament studies and I envision returning to this work many times in the future.NOTE: To comply with regulations of the Federal Trade Commission I would like to state that I have received a complementary copy of the aforementioned text as compensation for my review.

I didn't expect Murray Rothbard depth but I am not sure who the audience Matt Kibbe was shooting for on this one. I offered it to a friend who was interested in the concepts before I read it myself.... but now I imagine it just confused him.

I actually didn't have too high expectations about this book but I was more than pleasantly surprised. "Don't Hurt People and Don't Take Their Stuff" is actually pretty good. A concise, eminently readable, straightforward Libertarian Manifesto with 6 simple "Rules for Liberty" - #1 Don't Hurt People, #2 Don't take people's stuff, #3 Take Responsibility, #4 Work for it, #5 Mind your own business, and #6 Fight the Power. This is not a work of deep philosophical thought but it nicely condenses a number of great works that are. I recommend it most especially to those who have not personally read Ayn Rand, Thomas Sowell, Adam Smith, F.A. Hayek, and Ludwig von Mises and are looking to acquire a basic understanding of libertarian philosophy.

Don't Hurt People and Don't Take Their Stuff by Matt Kibbe Matt Kibbe of Freedom Works presents both the need for a libertarian restoration of rationality in American and a collection of reforms that will go a long ways toward that restoration. Liberty of course will be at the crux of any reforms. The first part of the lively text contains a familiar recitation of the horrors of an over reaching government in the current administration and horrors that have been long in the making. You know what they are. At the heart of all of them is a government out of control even of its own advocates who sit in the offices of power in Washington D.C. How do I know the government is out of control of even those who are putatively in control of it? Because when ever some enormity comes to public light the agency head always has the same answer. “Gee I didn't know my subordinates were selling guns to narko-terriorists.” or “Gee I didn't know my subordinates were using the IRS to go after the political opponents of the President.” Mr. Kibbe does give us a list of 12 reforms that will go a long way to helping the current desperate situation. I regret that he does not give more concrete advise on how to accomplish his goal. His six principals however do give one hope to continue the struggle. Don't Hurt People. Don't take people's stuff. Take responsibility. Work for it. Mind your own business. And best of all Fight the Power. Libertarians, libertarians and those who want to understand that point of view will find Matt Kibbe a gleeful and informed guide.

If you want to know what libertarians think, without getting into the some of the contentious nerdy libertarian things like the finer points of the non-aggression principle, this is a great book to read. Libertarians actually hold a wide range of views on social issues, but are united in valuing liberty.

Matte came through once again. He wrote an easy to read and understand book. I met him once at a Freedom Works meeting and he is just one great person. The theory to the book is don't hurt others or take what is not yours. They are two steps to the golden rules. If we lived by those rules the world would be a better place and this pertains to the government also.

A pretty solid read.

No point in beating my gums about Milton Erickson. You can see for yourself how he deals with people…"The presenting problem was a 14-year-old girl who developed the idea that her feet were much too large. The mother came alone to Erickson and described the situation. For three months the girl had been becoming more and more withdrawn, and she didn't want to go to school or to church or to be seen on the street. The girl would not allow the subject of her feet to be discussed, and she would not go to a doctor to talk to him. No amount of reassurance by her mother had an influence, and the girl was becoming more and more seclusive. Erickson reports: 'I arranged with the mother to visit the home on the following day under false pretenses. The girl would be told that I was coming to examine the mother to see if she had the flu. When I arrived at the house her mother was in bed. I did a careful examination of her, listening to her chest, etc.  The girl was present. I sent her for a towel, and I asked that she stand beside me in case I needed something. This gave me an opportunity to look her over. She was rather stoutly built and her feet were not large.“Studying the girl, I wondered what I could do to get her over this problem. Finally I hit upon a plan. As I finished my examination of the mother, I maneuvered the girl into a position directly behind me. I was sitting on the bed talking to the mother, and I got up slowly and carefully and then stepped back awkwardly. I put my heel down squarely on the girl’s toes.  The girl, of course, squawked with pain. I turned on her and in a tone of absolute fury said,  ‘If you would grow those things large enough for a man to see, I wouldn't be in this sort of situation!’  The girl looked at me, puzzled. That day she asked her mother if she could go out to a show, which she hadn't done in months. She went to school and church, and that was the end of her seclusiveness. She didn't realize what I had done, nor had her mother. All the mother noticed was that I had been impolite to her daughter."Haley, who put this book together, spends a few more words analyzing what Erickson did, but I leave you to figure it out for yourself.In another very poignant account, Erickson tells of dealing with a young woman's deepening depression and withdrawal from social/sexual relationships – he found under hypnosis that she had powerful feelings of disgust toward any kind of sex, and he traced it to an identification with her dead mother. The mother died when the girl was 13 and had previously warned the girl to stay away from boys, that sex was dirty. In subsequent hypnotic sessions he got across to the girl that what her mother had told her was perfectly appropriate for that age, but had her mother lived she would have told her all sorts of other things. He went on to lecture her about the joys and responsibilities of sex, much as her mother might have done when she was older.Are these techniques that Erickson uses? I suppose you could say they are, but I defy you to just go out and use them. They are only useful if you have the strength, courage, wisdom, kindness, and understanding that Erickson had. And if you have all those things, you probably don't need the techniques.There are many more wonderful illustrations from Erickson’s practice of psychotherapy in this book. While I can't agree with Haley’s obsession with technique, I am forever in his debt for introducing me to Milton Erickson, who was obviously more of a magician than anything else.

The people who should be interested in reading this book are the professionals who wish vary their and customize their approach to their patients.My interest in the book was to find out more about Erickson and his therapeutic techniques that I could apply in my own life. It succeeded in satisfying both my aims. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book.

Milton Erickson is always worth reading about. His approach to psychotherapy is original, effective, sensible and fun. He studied the conventional methods, but he didn't use them. He used his own methods, and did so masterfully.One of the most refreshing things about him is that he tossed the usual routine in the garbage. You won't find him sitting in a chair next to his patient who is babbling on and on about childhood and parents. Erickson didn't dwell on the past, which makes him unique in his field.Erickson looked for solutions in the present, and found them. His patients often presented very extreme, very pathetic problems. He tackled them head on. In this book you will see how he succeeded, in his very practical and imaginative way.

Highly recommended reading for anyone who wants to gain a basic understanding of how hypnosis works.This is a great book for anyone who has been influenced unconsciously by this type of hypnosis. Particularly for those who have been involved with a cult leader or guru (Byron Katie, for example) who uses these methods to bypass their victims conscious mind and rational thought, in order to influence and control their behavior, thoughts, etc. This book is non-technical and non-specific enough to help victims of mind control identify methods used to persuade them, and to take control of their own lives again.Very interesting and enlightening read.
