For those at the helm, the philanthropic plutocrats and aspiring 'change agents' who believe they are helping but are actually making things worse, it’s time for a reckoning with their role in this spiraling dilemma. I suggest they might want to read a copy of this book while in the Hamptons this summer.” —Joseph E. Stiglitz, The New York Times Book Review  “Anand Giridharadas takes a swipe at the global elite in a trenchant, provocative and well-researched book about the people who are notionally generating social change . . . Read it and beware.” —Martha Lane Fox, Financial Times, “Books of the Year 2018”“A splendid polemic  . . . Giridharadas writes brilliantly on the parasitic philanthropy industry.” —The Economist“Impassioned . . . That Giridharadas questions an idea that has become part of the air we breathe is alone worth the price of the book, and his delicious skewering of the many who exalt their own goodness while making money from dubious business practices makes for entertaining reading.” —Bethany McLean, The Washington Post“One of the most insightful and provocative books about what’s going on in America that I’ve read in years.” —Senator Brian Schatz (Hawaii)“The past years have seen some outstanding books on how philanthropists and their dollars have shaped public policy . . .  [Anand Giridharadas] zeros in on what he sees as a glaring hypocrisy among affluent elites: that while many well-meaning (and well-off) Americans claim to want to improve society's inequalities, they don't challenge the structures that preserve that inequality, not wanting to jeopardize their own privileged positions.” —Jessica Smith, NPR, “Best Books of 2018” “Important . . . This must-have title will be of great interest to readers, from students to professionals and everyone in-between, interested in solutions to today’s complex problems . . . Winners Take All will be the starting point of conversations private and in groups on alternatives to the status quo and calls to action. An excellent book for troubled times.” —Booklist“In Anand’s thought-provoking book his fresh perspective on solving complex societal problems is admirable. I appreciate his commitment and dedication to spreading social justice.” —Bill Gates“An insightful and refreshing perspective on some of the most vexing issues this nation confronts. This is an important book from a gifted writer whose honest exploration of complex problems provides urgently needed clarity in an increasingly confusing era.” —Bryan Stevenson, author of Just Mercy“A trenchant, humane, and often revelatory investigation by one of the wisest nonfiction writers going.” —Katherine Boo, author of Behind the Beautiful Forevers“Winners Take All is the book I have been waiting for—the most important intervention yet regarding elite-driven solutions, a vitally important problem to expose. The book courageously answers so many of the critical questions about how, despite much good will and many good people, we struggle to achieve progress in twenty-first-century America. If you want to be part of the solution, you should read this book.” —Ai-jen Poo, director, National Domestic Workers Alliance   “A brilliant, rising voice of our era takes us on a journey among the global elite in his search for understanding of our tragic disconnect. Thought-provoking, expansive, and timely.” —Isabel Wilkerson, author, The Warmth of Other Suns“Winners Take All boldly exposes one of the great if little-reported scandals of the age of globalization: the domestication of the life of the mind by political and financial power and the substitution of ‘thought leaders’ for critical thinkers. It not only reorients us as we lurch out of a long ideological intoxication; it also embodies the values—intellectual autonomy and dissent—that we need to build a just society.” —Pankaj Mishra, author of Age of Anger“In this trenchant and timely book, Anand Giridharadas shows how the winners of global capitalism seek to help the losers, but without disturbing the market-friendly arrangements that keep the winners on top. He gives us an incisive critique of corporate-sponsored charities that promote frictionless ‘win-win’ solutions to the world’s problems but disdain the hard, contentious work of democratic politics. An indispensable guide for those perplexed by the rising public anger toward ‘change-making’ elites.” —Michael J. Sandel, author of What Money Can’t Buy: The Moral Limits of Markets

As someone who has spent many years seeking/securing grants from foundations, and almost 12 years working as a senior program officer at a large community and large private foundation, I believe my "headline," while humorous, sums up my understanding of philanthropy and one of the major themes of Winners Take All. I share another concern well described by Anand, namely, the extremely serious abdication of public responsibility for basic human needs. In large part, this is because the very rich, the gatekeepers they employ, and their political allies have intentionally worked to limit the viability of our public sector since the Reagan presidency. In fact, as Anand also notes, this has been done in various ways since the early part of the 20th century when the first large foundations were created by Rockefeller and Carnegie. I believe Anand would agree with my view that the rich use philanthropy and the entire nonprofit sector as a diversion from a strong public sector which, in these times, would be at least some form of American social democracy. If I could afford it, I would buy copies of Winners Take All for anyone who wants to understand the role of charity and philanthropy in maintaining existing power relations by limiting the power and effectiveness of a viable, democratic public sector. We must address the dominance of unaccountable, self-serving elites with democratic, public alternatives as Anand so brilliantly, courageously, and elegantly elucidates in Winners Take All.

I picked up this book thinking it was about me and my friends. It's not, though. Despite the subtitle, Winners Take All is not about the entrepreneurs and investors who are involved in socially responsible businesses whose mission is to change the world. The sole exception is the author's brief excursion in the epilogue into the B Corporation movement, in which I've been involved since the beginning. And he appears not to understand what B Corps are about."Elite-led, market-friendly, winner-safe social change"In Winners Take All, author Anand Giridharadas zeroes in on growing economic inequality in America. As he notes at the outset, "When the fruits of change have fallen on the United States in recent decades, the very fortunate have basketed almost all of them." His culprit? "Elite-led, market-friendly, winner-safe social change." This is the set of beliefs held by the people who attend the World Economic Forum at Davos and gather at such other places as Aspen and the Clinton Global Initiative. In reviewing this book for the New York Times, Nobel Prize-winner Joseph Stieglitz described them as "an elite that, rather than pushing for systemic change, only reinforces our lopsided economic reality—all while hobnobbing on the conference circuit and trafficking in platitudes." Giridharadas calls their mindset MarketWorld."An ascendant power elite" that seeks to do good by doing well"MarketWorld," he explains, "is an ascendant power elite that is defined by the concurrent drives to do well and do good, to change the world while also profiting from the status quo. It consists of enlightened businesspeople and their collaborators in the worlds of charity, academia, media government, and think tanks."Giridharadas takes on the elite consulting firms as well, citing McKinsey and its peers in the industry as among the culprits. The values they all promote are those of the marketplace; its proponents always talk about opportunities to solve problems, never about those who are responsible for creating the problems in the first place. The author distinguishes between public intellectuals (good) and thought leaders (bad). In his view, the former are primarily academics free of commercial influences. The latter have fallen for MarketWorld values, hook, line, and sinker. And that strikes me as simplistic. It would be naive to imply that major corporations haven't made inroads into academia. The eight billionaires who own half the world's wealth are an easy targetAuthor Anand Giridharadas aims his most powerful broadsides at easy targets such as the multimillionaire and billionaire leaders of the tech and financial industries. Can anyone seriously argue that Amazon, Google, Facebook, and Goldman Sachs are addressing the economic inequality that Giridharadas identifies as the central issue? No matter what their leaders say, they're clearly part of the problem, not the solution. As I write today, Jeff Bezos of Amazon can claim a net worth of $162.9 billion. Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg is "worth" $60.4 billion. The Google guys, Larry Page and Sergei Brin, weigh in at $54.1 billion and $52.7 billion, respectively. These four men are among the eight billionaires whose collective net worth is equal to all the wealth of half of the world's population. Yes, just eight billionaires. And Goldman Sachs possesses assets of nearly $1 trillion. How could anyone suggest that these people would even consider lobbying the federal government to adopt policies that would lessen economic inequality in America? Yet Giridharadas complains that they don't.Winners Take All is based on the premise that these would-be do-gooders call the shots in the American economy and dominate the political debate. The author implies that economic inequality would quickly shrink if these folks were to work for genuine social change. However, this is far from the truth. Most wealthy people in the United States are conservative Republicans who do not pretend to be change agents. And they exert far greater power and influence in American society than the Davos and Aspen set. In today's political discourse, the Heritage Foundation and its peers among Right-Wing think tanks and the institutions of the Christian Right wield far more power in setting government policy at both the federal and state levels than the "enlightened elite" Giridharadas writes about.Bill Clinton's central role in making the problem immeasurably worseIn the author's view, it's not just clueless businessmen or Republicans who are at fault. Bill Clinton also comes in for justifiable criticism. His "Third Way" between left and right effectively reversed the Democratic Party's commitment to helping the less fortunate in our society. Remember mass incarceration? Financial deregulation? So-called welfare "reform?" Bill Clinton institutionalized the neoliberal consensus that Ronald Reagan had brought to the White House a decade previously—and the consequences were devastating, years before Donald Trump entered the political scene. On this point, Giridharadas is right on the money. (Pun intended.)Just for example, deregulation, including the repeal of Glass-Steagall, was among the root causes of the Great Recession that struck in 2008. Don't forget that millions lost their homes, and millions more lost their jobs, in that calamitous economic downturn. Democrat or Republican—it doesn't seem to matter. Not a single US President over the past half century has taken any significant step to address America’s growing inequality in wealth and income. Barack Obama was by far the best of them, but he also:** named as his top economic advisers many of the same people whose policies in the 90s brought down the economy in the 2000s;** prevented the prosecution of the bankers who caused the crash; and**failed to question the prevailing bipartisan love affair with Corporate America.Who will lead society toward viable solutions? Here's the crux of the matter, as Giridharadas sees it: "What is at stake is whether the reform of our common life is led by governments elected by and accountable to the people, or rather by wealthy elites claiming to know our best interests." It doesn't matter how well-intentioned they might make themselves out to be. If they don't actively work to raise estate and income taxes, drive private money out of politics, provide universal free healthcare, and work to elect people committed to serving the majority of America's people, they're part of the problem. Nothing else they do can be a solution. And to that I say amen. What other reviewers say about the book** In his review of the book, Joseph Stieglitz notes that "Giridharadas is careful not to offend. He writes on two levels—seemingly tactful and subtle—but ultimately he presents a devastating portrait of a whole class, one easier to satirize than to reform."** Kirkus Reviews leads its commentary with this: "Give a hungry man a fish, and you get to pat yourself on the back—and take a tax deduction." The review concludes that Winners Take All is "A provocative critique of the kind of modern, feel-good giving that addresses symptoms and not causes."** Writing in Forbes, B Lab co-founder and managing partner Jay Coen Gilbert terms Winners Take All a "new and important book." Before launching into a defense of Certified B Corporations, Gilbert notes that "In provocative style and with compelling substance, Giridharadas speaks truth to power, calling elites to account for giving so much lip service to 'changing the world,' while mostly upholding an unacceptable status quo."

Winners Take All is a self-help book for the uber wealthy. I say this somewhat in jest, but, as Anand Giridharadas writes in his acknowledgements, his purpose for writing this book was as an “inquiry into the apparatus of justification” that permits the wealthy to win at all costs, including extractive business practices that result in growing inequality and environmental damage, only to position themselves as having the answers to the problems that they have contributed to creating and accelerating. While his focus is on the uber wealthy, Giridharadas tenaciously exposes a universal human deficit: We all struggle to recognize our two selves—the person we aspire to be and the person we are. What continuously came up for me as I read Winners Take All is the need people have to be seen as good, but not being able to make the personal sacrifices (i.e. not winning) that real goodness demands. This is, by far, one of the most important books published in the 21st century. Giridharadas articulates, with great storytelling, the illusion that has gripped us—particularly Americans,—allowing, if not engineering, injustice and inequality into our way of life: There are several ways to define it, including market mindset or really materialism where money elevates the monied by virtue of their market acumen to rule. He calls them MarketWorlders—people who apply a market perspective to solving social issues. Winners Take All offers all of us who have ever dreamt of changing the world to interrogate our motives, to think about who we are inviting to the table, and to understand that who we are, the experiences we’ve had, and the questions we ask or don’t ask determine the who, what, when, where and how of change. And if the only change we can imagine insists on us not losing comfort, reputation, influence, power, and so on, then we’ve already limited the change that is possible.

Review

"Judy Belcher and Tamara Honaman's new book, Polymer Clay Master Class: Exploring Process, Technique, and Collaboration with 11 Master Artists can be used as a 'how-to' book, however that is not its main attribute.  Lots of publications tell you how to make something through carefully written text steps and accompanying photos, but Polymer Clay Master Class goes beyond that and examines the creative process itself. Unlike the others, this volume offers an opportunity to read 'between the lines' along the path of creating." --Polymer Art Archive

Maybe my review is colored by the fact that the Amazon "preview" was a screenshot of the cover and I bought this on faith after reading the reviews, both 5 stars and 1 star. I got burnt. The authors work is wondrous. The narrative of how they collaborated is boring. The instructions and illustrations are minimal and vague, almost as if the authors don't want you to duplicate their results, unlike many master artists in history. If Amazon had a decent preview of the instructions in this book, I would not have bought it. Live and learn ... I'll not buy another Amazon book without a decent preview.

This book is one of the best polymer books out there. The projects are new and different with step by step directions that seem well thought out and complete. Photography is exceptional and it covers a variety of techniques and styles. What makes this book different than the other really good project books is the look inside the artists mind. I enjoyed seeing the thought processes of each artist as they worked through their concepts to execution and how they were able to work together with artists that had different styles and work habits. The book goes over all basic techniques but is one of the few books that can also accommodate experienced clayers. Most polymer books get flipped through for projects and used to follow the step by steps to learn a technique. This book has all that and more. I read this book cover to cover and enjoyed the story of how this group of artists created several collaborative projects and describe their working process, strengths and weaknesses. I consider Polymer Clay Master Class a must have for all polymer artists but I believe artists of any media would enjoy and benefit from the story of the collaborative experience. - Robin Milne (Pres. NJ Polymer Clay Guild)

I purchased this book out of curiosity, drawn to its beautiful images. I discovered readable text, clear instructions with pictures to match, and most surprisingly of all a story of collaboration and consideration. The concept for this book was brilliant, and I hope Ms. Honaman and Ms. Belcher bring more artists together in this manner in the future. Well done, well worth the price!

As an off-loom bead weaving artist I am interested in three-dimensional works, no matter the medium. There are wonderful works exhibited here by established polymer clay artists. The colors, shapes and compositions of the pieces serve as wonderful inspiration. The instructions are clear and concise with excellent photos, and there are some wonderful tips that these artists have shared. It is also fascinating to hear the thought process of these master artists before beginning a project -- some take their time and consider all possibilities, while others just dive right in and see what develops. Wonderful book for those interested in polymer or art in any form!

Need more to invest in complete the project it not worth the money, unless your interested weird figures 2 thumbs down

Arrived quickly. Just as described. GREAT BOOK!

I buy a lot of "how to" craft books, and a lot of books full of inspiring photos. This is one I would NOT have purchased had I been looking at a bookstore instead of online. I wasn't impressed with the inspirational quality or the how-tos. I can see some people really enjoying it for the artist's stories and process, but would suggest you actually look at the book before deciding to buy.

I liked the book but was disappointed that they didn't add more projects and techniques. Wish now I had waited to buy it. The scope of the book and the artist they highlighted was interesting but just didn't hold enough for me I was really hoping to learn more from these artist.

The Heroes, by Joe Abercrombie

Review

"Lord of the rings as directed by Kurosawa" --- Wall Street Journal."Magnificent, richly entertaining." --- Time"Abercrombie never glosses over a moment of the madness, passion, and horror of war, nor the tribulations that turn ordinary people into the titular heroes." --- Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)"The Heroes is an indictment of war and the duplicity that corrupts men striving for total power: bloody and violent, but never gratuitously so, it's imbued with cutting humour, acute characterisation and world-weary wisdom about the weaknesses of the human race. Brilliant." --- Eric Brown, The Guardian (UK)"Delivered in Abercrombie's trademark witty style ... This is an action-packed novel full of brutality, black humour and razor-sharp characterisation." --- Dave Bradley, SFX (5 star review)"It's an excellent tale and arguably Abercrombie's best book yet ... Its pace really showcases his talent for differently voiced and realistically motivated characters ... any genre fan can enjoy what's one of the best fantasy books of the past year." --- SciFi Now (5 star review)

I just love this guy, Joe Abercrombie. He just REALLY writes good stories with interesting characters and all sorts of twists in the plot. In some ways it reminded me of the battle of Gettysburg. A three day fight that ended in a stalemate and their were battles all over the place. The one difference was that the "Union" gained the high ground on the first day but then lost it and found themselves in the position of having to regain it.There is a cast of character and all of them are interesting, from the good people (not many of those) to the bad people (lots of those). It is like Game of Thrones. It is a great story that focuses entirely on a battle and the characters that make up that battle. There are lots of twists and turns and you just know you do not want to have been there. It was not fun for anyone except the First Magi. This is Joe at his best! Although he is always at his best. I am reading EVERYTHING he has published. I LIKE THIS GUY.

The Heroes embodies everything I like about the fantasy genre right now.I was an English major once upon a time, and used to read plenty of serious literature. But as I've grown older, I have less patience for that kind of fiction. Writers of genre fiction, and fantasy in particular, haven't forgotten that great books are ultimately about great storytelling. It's about putting interesting characters in tight spots and seeing what happens. Everything else is secondary. And The Heroes is a bloody great story. It's tightly focused on a single battle over a three-day period. The action is well done, but it's mainly the very flawed characters making good and bad decisions in desperate situations that make the story so entertaining. Each chapter has a point-of-view character, and the tone and style change, sometimes subtly, sometimes dramatically, as the story shifts between them. (The dialog and language of the northmen is just one example, and Abercrombie deliberately draws some humor out of this.) Each chapter reads like a well-honed short story, with a mini story arc for that particular character. I found each of the points of view interesting and entertaining -- there wasn't a single chapter where I found myself skimming to get to the next good bit, because every page is a pleasure. There is a theme here (the nature of heroism), but it's not heavy handed and adds some emotional depth to the story. I even had a tear in my eye at one point. But mostly the book struck me as honest, funny, touching, and vastly entertaining.

If you don't like this book, I think you are missing the point. This is not high fantasy quest adventure storytelling. Abercrombie introduced this world and cast in such a tale, but I like The Heroes, BSCand red country better than first law, because they are familiar allegories set in his ultra violent fantasy world. This is a war story. Replace the details and it could have been set in Stalingrad. In fact the whole narrative is reminiscent of Gettysburg. Red country is really a re telling of both both the Searchers and The outlaw Josey Wales. Best Served Cold is a mafia like revenge take, like The Godfather. His prose is electric, his characters unforgettable. Whirrun of Bligh is one of the most interesting fantasy characters I have seen in some time. The violence is visceral but not celebrated. I could read books like this endlessly. Also, the author has a gift for great names for characters. Fantasy novels often have lackluster or goofy sounding names for characters, or too, obvious " hero" , "evil wizard" " barbarian " or " princess " names. The names are fantastic especially the Northmen. It really helps the characters standout, and the whole hierarchy of Named Men illustrates this brilliantly.

The Heroes is another Fantastic book by fantasy author Joe Abercrombie. Its about the struggle between the Union and the North focusing in on a 3 day battle that takes place in a valley located near a small village. It has a good number of familiar characters that have been in the First Law trilogy such as Black Dow, Shivers, Prince Calder, the Dogman, Lord Marshal Kroy,Bremer dan Gorst, and Bayaz. It also introduces us to some new characters and you get alternating perspectives throughout the battle. The characters are great and really get a sense of each of the main characters. The characters aren't one dimensional and like in his previous books aren't purely good or evil but some of both.Again like his previous books there is Great action and allot of it considering that its a 3 day battle. Similar to how he describes his characters, Abercrombie describes war in a very realistic way. Its not something to be glorified and have heroes triumphing over the odds. Even though its a fantasy novel, he shows us how bloody and savage war is. That it is confusing, at times boring and will make even the bravest man scared enough to shake in his boots.Even though this all takes place on a battle its not all about fighting. There is allot of scheming going on and furthers the shape of the First Law landscape. If you are a fan of Abercrombie or have read his previous books, I can tell you that they just keep on getting better.

First of all, a warning. If you listen to the Bobby Bones show, you know Bobby can be all over the place with random side thoughts in the middle of another topic. The book is written the same. I found that to be genuine instead of distracting or confusing. Bobby uses real people with real stories and real failures that helped lead them to their successes. The book is very encouraging for those of us reading who just needed a push. IT’S OK TO FAIL. You don’t succeed without failing. I really enjoyed the book.

Buy the audible version! Bobby does a great job with the audio (duh, he's in radio). His first book Bare Bones was amazing so of course I pre-ordered this one and I was very pleasantly surprised. I credit a lot of Bobby's great tips to him being a "grinder" and a "doer" but also it's obvious that all those sessions of therapy he talks about have paid off. I'm thankful to the revelations he's had because some of us can't (yet) afford therapy! 😅I really admire Bobby- how he is always challenging himself to be a better version of himself; he goes for what he wants and he gets it. That's why I was looking forward to his tips on success. He's one of the few people in the public eye that is down-to-earth and logical enough for me to actually care about his opinion. I appreciate youuuu, Bobby, aka Aristotle of Arkansas;).~a fellow small town, ambitious Arkansasan

Read this book! Even if you're not a country music fan or even listen to the Bobby Bones Show. He is inspirational and motivational! 5 stars from a huge fan of the show and Bobby's books!

This was a terrible read. I struggled to even get through the book. I am a fan of Bobby Bones and his radio show, but this book was awkward, and beyond repetitive. I have read a ton of books about leadership and inspiration, but this falls very flat. Even the added stories from friends are just kind of contrived and awkward. Listening to his radio show provides far more daily inspiration. His radio segments about great people doing things for others are far more interesting than anything in this book. I really wish folks would put aside their like of Bobby and judge the book for what it is. Don't spend your money on this. If you want to read something from a celebrity about overcoming obstacles and learning from them, read the book by Phil Robertson (yes the Duck Dynasty guy). At least it is interesting. I have no doubt about what a fantastic job Bobby Bones has done to overcome his childhood shortfalls, but none of that comes out in this book.

Bobby is a real rags to riches story, he’s the real deal. Buy his book today, you won’t be sorry. Listen to the Bobby Bones Show on iHeartRadio and they have a podcast too. I’ve been listening for 5 years, will make you be a better you!!!

I love that bobby is basically still just a regular guy. but look at him go! from humble beginnings in a tiny town in Arkansas (population 700) to the star of THE leading country morning radio show. And now, the come out of nowhere, WINNER of Dancing with the Stars. In this book, BBones details his life philosophy of trying until you succeed. Anecdotes of his morning show co-stars and successful friends (ie sports and music celebrities) in times they failed and then tried again, and again, and again, until they succeeded. If you aren't sure about this book, take the chance. You WONT be disappointed.

This is a good book! So different than most self-help books in that it gives you permission to fail. Learning from those failures and continuing on is the best key to success you could ever have. I also love that it includes other successful people and their stories of failing and the lessons learned.
