Alina met Carson and they became best friends during their early years in school. Alina lost her mother and stepped in to the role of taking care of her young siblings and helping her father as an accountant and cleaning in the saloon he owned. Carson became the town Sheriff and meets a young Lady new to town and ends up married to her and his friendship with Alina slips by the wayside. Alina is courted by a young man that has come to town and she concludes that if he asks her to marry him that she'll accept since she's had to give up Carson who now also has a daughter. Unbeknownst to Alina, her suitor has ties to the outlaws that have been terrorizing the towns in the area. Things take a terrifying twist after Carson arrests him and he's sent to prison, because the leader of the outlaws is his brother and the only other surviving member of their family. The gang holds up the Saloon and takes hostages. The leader and two of his men escape from the net devised by the Sheriff's men and make it back to their hideout. The plot thickens when Alina is kidnapped by the outlaws and the demand that his brother be released in trade for her. It creates quite a dilemma for the Sheriff because he knows how dangerous the situation could become if the prisoner gains his freedom. Carson had already lost his wife, daughter and friends to the outlaws crime spree and doesn't want to lose Alina too. Read the book and find out how Carson handles the dilemma and how the gang is captured and how he has resolved the mending of his heart. I think that you'll enjoy this book as much as I have.
This was an excellent story about "the one who got away" that was redeemed in the end for a HEA. Alina's father owed the town saloon and she, being 18, helped him by working in the kitchen, cleaning and keeping the books. She was shunned by some of the townspeople because a lady wouldn't work in such a place. To Alina, it was a business that supported her and her 2 siblings. She loved her childhood best friend who was the Sheriff but a bit older. Their lives took different paths though. When Alina's mother died, she took on the responsibility of raising her siblings and Carson married a newcomer to the town. A gang of outlaws pulled a bank robbery with tragic consequences. Alina found out that a man who was courting her was in a gang who was terrorizing the area. There's much suspense following a saloon robbery and a kidnapping. This book will keep you turning the pages to see what happens next. There's also an extended epilogue that takes place about 6 years later to round out the story.I received an ARC from the author; this my voluntary review. Thanks Lorelei!
OMG! Wow! I'll get it out eventually. Maybe. Lorelei totally nailed this bad boy 100% on point with so many emotions it kept me riveted and frozen to my seat. I couldn't put this little jewel down had I wanted to. All the drama, fear, heartache, mystery and suspense builds while tension spirals. This is one amazing storylines with an incredibly strong plot that brings this read together perfectly. Twists and turns abound with unexpected circumstances that make for one thrilling experience. All the trials and tribulations, hope, uncertainty, loss and love make this one outstanding reads that you won't want to miss. The characters are complex and believable with such depth and individuality it's easy to relate. The scenes are so graphically detailed and descriptive you have no trouble picturing each scenario as they play off one another in perfect balance. Lorelei brought it with this amazing tale and swiftly bringing this read roaring to life flawlessly. Remarkable job Lorelei, thanks for sharing this little gem with us.I received a review copy of this story.
This book was about Alina who had to raise her brother and sister after her mom died. She had to give up her dreams of being a teacher and help her father run their saloon. Her childhood friend the Sheriff marries another woman but when the woman and his child are murdered in a bank robbery he becomes obsessed with saving the town while drowning in his grief. When Alina becomes kidnapped by a dangerous gang he finally realizes how much he cares for her. There were plenty of twists and turn, action and adventures. I enjoyed the characters and the various relationships of the townspeople. However I hated all the flip flopping from present to different points in the past. It was often confusing and hard to follow. I love this author but this was my least favorite of her books. It was hard to keep track of the different time lines. I think it could have been handled smoother.

And when she thinks her life is going somewhere she has a suitor now and could possibly get married but he turns out to be a criminal who has robbed a bank and now his gang has taken her hostage.Carson the town Sheriff has made it his mission to bring bank robbers to justice there a reminder of the loss of his wife and child and now another gang has taken his childhood friend captive he will have to save her especially since he relizes the depth of his feelings for her. This book has danger and suspense with a HEA a clean western historical read.
This is a serious and deep story about two childhood friends. Their back story is not a happy one, but their love for each other is deeper than they realize. Neither one ends up happy with the mate that they chose. The West can be a dark and dangerous place, and revenge seems to be in the air. The emotional impact wasn't as great as I thought it could be, and Carson seemed lost in his guilt and pain, instead of being the sheriff he promised himself he wanted to be. I loved Alina; she was so torn by duty and what she truly wanted from life. Even so, she is a strong woman with a strong character, understanding life doesn't always turn out the way you want, but living with what you have the best you can.
