This book is exactly what I was hoping for. My wife and I adopted a pregnant mustang last summer and had a need to know more about foaling than we did. We do now! We live in a very rural area of Arizona and for us there just are no vets a simple phone call away. This book doesn't assume that you will have a vet on hand for the birth. What it does do is get into all of the details such as what should happen, what could go wrong, and what to do if something does go wrong. It also covers care of the foal and the mare after the birth. We are 100% satisfied with this book!

Even though I’m a lifelong horse woman, having our own foal is a new experience. I want to raise the baby right.

While the author provided good basics about foaling out a mare I found some of her tips to be inaccurate. The author seemed to be very rigid in her opinions and I think that some of what she suggested are outdated methods.For the beginner breeder this is a great book to start with.

I bought a lot of books in anticipation of my first foal being born. This one is BY FAR the best one I've come across. It is now kept safely with my foaling kit to have as a quick referral. A must buy in my opinion!

I am a very experienced equestrian, with my mare expecting her second (my first) foal. I am quite familiar with the breeding/foaling/beyond process, but this will be my first time foaling out and raising my own personal foal.Clear, concise book that gets to the point - has excellent pictures and references and is clearly written by a human with opinions and personal experience. This book is more like talking to a good friend or breeding expert in person, as opposed to reading a college curriculum book. It has great checklists and helpful tips and hints, as the author clearly includes the mare's (and foal) comfort level and things that could overall just make her more comfortable through the process of late term/foaling/new mommihood.

The New Studies in Biblical Theology (NSBT) tackles the beloved Book of Jonah in this entry by Daniel Timmer. There’s really not a dud that I’ve seen in this series. Many attribute this consistent quality to the editorship of revered scholar D. A. Carson. I suspect that along with careful selection of contributors is responsible for the prestige of the series. If you value D. A. Carson as many do, you should know that he calls this volume by Timmer “a book to cherish”.The subtitle accurately outlines what you will find between these covers: “mission, salvation, and spirituality in the book of Jonah”. In fact, chapters one and two take mission and conversion/spirituality in Jonah and relates it to the entire biblical corpus.Chapters 3-6 take Jonah chapter by chapter drawing out its theology and again tracing the themes mentioned earlier. At times, the author is quite strict about the theology that can legitimately be mined here, perhaps overly so. Still, there are loads of great theological introspection for this familiar story. The concluding chapter effectively ties it all together.Mark this down as another entry in this winning series!

Daniel Timmer's contribution to the New Studies In biblical Theology is a worthy addition. His exploration of Jonah is as thorough as one will find. While this is NOT a commentary on Jonah (i.e. verse by verse) it out does most of the commentaries out there. This is a wonderful example of Biblical Theology, with Timmer exploring topics such as mission, spirituality, conversion and of course the place of Christ in Jonah. Timmer skillfully ties this book into the wider corpus of sin, judgment, the day of the Lord and the gospel. Oh how narrow and shallow is our sunday school treatment of Jonah!Highly Recommended.

I can still picture the flannel-graph; a paper whale swallowing a paper man against the light blue background. The story of Jonah and the whale seems to be a favorite among children's Sunday school Bible stories. My Children's Story Bible also told the story in a cartoon fashion. They both had the same moral: obey God or a fish will eat you. I think has contributed to more my apprehension of deep waters more than learning to fear the Lord.As I've grown, I've found the book of Jonah more intriguing. I've learned that this story is less about a fish and obeying God and more about God's concern for the nations and the prejudice of Jonah. But, what does Jonah have to do with Christ? How should Christians read this tale of this Jewish prophet?InterVarsity Press has just recently published its latest volume in the series, New Studies in Biblical Theology. I have enjoyed this series for a long time (Stephen Dempster's Dominion and Dynasty has proved my favorite so far) and I was very excited to read this latest addition. A Gracious and Compassionate God: Mission, Salvation and Spirituality in the book of Jonah by Daniel C. Timmer seeks to explore the book of Jonah in a fresh way.Given my background in flannel-fish-tales I was very interested in this new title. Dr. Timmer sees this book as an exploration of God's grace. "Jonah centres on the grand theme of the Bible: the manifestation of God's unmerited grace to those who have sinned against him" (17). This plays out in each character and the narrative as it develops. "The author develop this in all of the main characters as God's grace affects the lives of the sailors, of Jonah and of the Ninevites, but the clearest description of God's character in the book appears in the application to Nineveh of Exodus 34:6-7, where God's great mercy toward rebellious Israel first comes gloriously into view" (17). He explores this book chapter by chapter using the rubric of mission, salvation and spirituality. Additionally, he explores issues concerning the promise to Abraham and its fulfillment in Christ.As I have matured in my understanding of Scripture I find canonical expositions helpful. It is important to understand an book of Bible in its final, "canonical" form. What is this book's role in the larger canon? What does this book contribute to the overall canon and what themes does it emphasis? Timmer seeks to answer these types of questions and I found that helpful in my understanding of Jonah.For the most part I found this a helpful study in the book of Jonah. However, I felt that this work was more focused on the subjects of mission, salvation and spirituality than a study of Jonah. When I first picked up the book and read the introduction and conclusion I felt as though I were reading a different book not at all concerned with a study of Jonah. Perhaps, I have not read closely enough; it is entirely possible that I misunderstood the books purpose.I would not recommend this book for beginners in Old Testament studies or Biblical Theology. It is not an extremely technical book, but I did find it very helpful to be familiar with themes of the Old and New Testaments. Overall, this is a helpful contribution to Old Testament studies and I envision returning to this work many times in the future.NOTE: To comply with regulations of the Federal Trade Commission I would like to state that I have received a complementary copy of the aforementioned text as compensation for my review.

This is more of a collection of retrospective stories about how the authors habit of listening to Rush (the band) now fits into his political ideology than something you can chew mentally on. Pick up declaration of independents or anything by Nick Gillespie, Matt Welch or, of course, Ron Paul. I didn't expect Murray Rothbard depth but I am not sure who the audience Matt Kibbe was shooting for on this one. I offered it to a friend who was interested in the concepts before I read it myself.... but now I imagine it just confused him.

I actually didn't have too high expectations about this book but I was more than pleasantly surprised. "Don't Hurt People and Don't Take Their Stuff" is actually pretty good. A concise, eminently readable, straightforward Libertarian Manifesto with 6 simple "Rules for Liberty" - #1 Don't Hurt People, #2 Don't take people's stuff, #3 Take Responsibility, #4 Work for it, #5 Mind your own business, and #6 Fight the Power. This is not a work of deep philosophical thought but it nicely condenses a number of great works that are. I recommend it most especially to those who have not personally read Ayn Rand, Thomas Sowell, Adam Smith, F.A. Hayek, and Ludwig von Mises and are looking to acquire a basic understanding of libertarian philosophy.

Don't Hurt People and Don't Take Their Stuff by Matt Kibbe Matt Kibbe of Freedom Works presents both the need for a libertarian restoration of rationality in American and a collection of reforms that will go a long ways toward that restoration. Liberty of course will be at the crux of any reforms. The first part of the lively text contains a familiar recitation of the horrors of an over reaching government in the current administration and horrors that have been long in the making. You know what they are. At the heart of all of them is a government out of control even of its own advocates who sit in the offices of power in Washington D.C. How do I know the government is out of control of even those who are putatively in control of it? Because when ever some enormity comes to public light the agency head always has the same answer. “Gee I didn't know my subordinates were selling guns to narko-terriorists.” or “Gee I didn't know my subordinates were using the IRS to go after the political opponents of the President.” Mr. Kibbe does give us a list of 12 reforms that will go a long way to helping the current desperate situation. I regret that he does not give more concrete advise on how to accomplish his goal. His six principals however do give one hope to continue the struggle. Don't Hurt People. Don't take people's stuff. Take responsibility. Work for it. Mind your own business. And best of all Fight the Power. Libertarians, libertarians and those who want to understand that point of view will find Matt Kibbe a gleeful and informed guide.

If you want to know what libertarians think, without getting into the some of the contentious nerdy libertarian things like the finer points of the non-aggression principle, this is a great book to read. Libertarians actually hold a wide range of views on social issues, but are united in valuing liberty.

Matte came through once again. He wrote an easy to read and understand book. I met him once at a Freedom Works meeting and he is just one great person. The theory to the book is don't hurt others or take what is not yours. They are two steps to the golden rules. If we lived by those rules the world would be a better place and this pertains to the government also.

A pretty solid read.

No point in beating my gums about Milton Erickson. You can see for yourself how he deals with people…"The presenting problem was a 14-year-old girl who developed the idea that her feet were much too large. The mother came alone to Erickson and described the situation. For three months the girl had been becoming more and more withdrawn, and she didn't want to go to school or to church or to be seen on the street. The girl would not allow the subject of her feet to be discussed, and she would not go to a doctor to talk to him. No amount of reassurance by her mother had an influence, and the girl was becoming more and more seclusive. Erickson reports: 'I arranged with the mother to visit the home on the following day under false pretenses. The girl would be told that I was coming to examine the mother to see if she had the flu. When I arrived at the house her mother was in bed. I did a careful examination of her, listening to her chest, etc.  The girl was present. I sent her for a towel, and I asked that she stand beside me in case I needed something. This gave me an opportunity to look her over. She was rather stoutly built and her feet were not large.“Studying the girl, I wondered what I could do to get her over this problem. Finally I hit upon a plan. As I finished my examination of the mother, I maneuvered the girl into a position directly behind me. I was sitting on the bed talking to the mother, and I got up slowly and carefully and then stepped back awkwardly. I put my heel down squarely on the girl’s toes.  The girl, of course, squawked with pain. I turned on her and in a tone of absolute fury said,  ‘If you would grow those things large enough for a man to see, I wouldn't be in this sort of situation!’  The girl looked at me, puzzled. That day she asked her mother if she could go out to a show, which she hadn't done in months. She went to school and church, and that was the end of her seclusiveness. She didn't realize what I had done, nor had her mother. All the mother noticed was that I had been impolite to her daughter."Haley, who put this book together, spends a few more words analyzing what Erickson did, but I leave you to figure it out for yourself.In another very poignant account, Erickson tells of dealing with a young woman's deepening depression and withdrawal from social/sexual relationships – he found under hypnosis that she had powerful feelings of disgust toward any kind of sex, and he traced it to an identification with her dead mother. The mother died when the girl was 13 and had previously warned the girl to stay away from boys, that sex was dirty. In subsequent hypnotic sessions he got across to the girl that what her mother had told her was perfectly appropriate for that age, but had her mother lived she would have told her all sorts of other things. He went on to lecture her about the joys and responsibilities of sex, much as her mother might have done when she was older.Are these techniques that Erickson uses? I suppose you could say they are, but I defy you to just go out and use them. They are only useful if you have the strength, courage, wisdom, kindness, and understanding that Erickson had. And if you have all those things, you probably don't need the techniques.There are many more wonderful illustrations from Erickson’s practice of psychotherapy in this book. While I can't agree with Haley’s obsession with technique, I am forever in his debt for introducing me to Milton Erickson, who was obviously more of a magician than anything else.

The people who should be interested in reading this book are the professionals who wish vary their and customize their approach to their patients.My interest in the book was to find out more about Erickson and his therapeutic techniques that I could apply in my own life. It succeeded in satisfying both my aims. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book.

Milton Erickson is always worth reading about. His approach to psychotherapy is original, effective, sensible and fun. He studied the conventional methods, but he didn't use them. He used his own methods, and did so masterfully.One of the most refreshing things about him is that he tossed the usual routine in the garbage. You won't find him sitting in a chair next to his patient who is babbling on and on about childhood and parents. Erickson didn't dwell on the past, which makes him unique in his field.Erickson looked for solutions in the present, and found them. His patients often presented very extreme, very pathetic problems. He tackled them head on. In this book you will see how he succeeded, in his very practical and imaginative way.

Highly recommended reading for anyone who wants to gain a basic understanding of how hypnosis works.This is a great book for anyone who has been influenced unconsciously by this type of hypnosis. Particularly for those who have been involved with a cult leader or guru (Byron Katie, for example) who uses these methods to bypass their victims conscious mind and rational thought, in order to influence and control their behavior, thoughts, etc. This book is non-technical and non-specific enough to help victims of mind control identify methods used to persuade them, and to take control of their own lives again.Very interesting and enlightening read.
