Many of the works in Semitic languages have utilized a linguist approach that is unique to Semitic Linguistics limiting the works usefulness for general linguist studies. This study is conducted in the mode and style of contemporary linguistics, making it invaluable. But it is not for beginning students of either Arabic or linguistics. A significant knowledge of both is necessary to get the full benefit of this study.

I purchased this book because I was looking for a resource to complement my studies of Arabic, and to show the presence of Arabic words in other world languages. I got much, much more than that!At least the mainly historical sections of the book were written in comprehensible, elucidating language. I enjoyed reading about the origins of the language: in poetry and as a blend of linguistic forms. If you're looking for an explanation regarding the emergence of MSA (al-Fusha), this is probably the book for you. I imagine it would be useful for the professional and the layman. The only surprise is the prize. Since the book is a standard reference in the chaotic field of Arabic linguistics, I assume the price reflects demand in the academic community. Just wish there were a cheap paperback version.

Awesome book that provides a linguistic/historical overview of the language, placed in its Semitic roots.

This was an excellent, well researched book. It was full of history, which added context to the discussion of the dialects, and despite being a speaker, I found it full of new information. Personally, I enjoyed most the parts on the mass bedouin migrations to Egypt and the Maghreb, the story of the Banu Hilal and the Banu Sulaym, and the great amount of information on Bedouin migrations, which help explain how certain characteristics spread.A basic knowledge of Arabic is definitely required, or it will be a tedious book to complete, and I would also say that a knowledge of linguistics would also be helpful, as the book is filled with linguistic terminology such as dipthongs, verbo-nominal compounds, infinitives, suffixes, subjunctives, etc. It would have been useful to have a glossary at the end.The only drawback of the book is that all of the Arabic is transliterated into English. I would have found the book much easier if the words had been left in Arabic. For the next edition, I would recommend keeping the words in Arabic, and adding footnotes to the bottom of the page with the English transliterations for those who need them. All in all, an excellent non-Arab study into the language.A-

This is a very detailed and scientific analysis of the evolution of Arabic Language, although it may not be meant for the lay man. Kees Vertsteegh has painstakingly detailed-out the linguistic history of Arabic Language starting from its birth in the History all the way to the current state of the language in different parts of the Arabic world. One point to note though: the book uses a lot of phonetic symbols but does not provide a legend for the same. All in all, a marvelous treatise and a readable book for those interested in 'The Arabic Language'.

I just finished reading Versteegh's book and I thought it was a good read for those interested in knowing the background of the Arabic language. There's information regarding the relationship between Arabic and Aramaic, as well as Hebrew and Arabic. A student of Arabic, like myself, would find this book to be a review of the origins and similarities between the semetic languages. The most interesting chapters are those of the Arabic dialects. The book goes into detail about the Maghrebi, Egyptian, Levantine, and Yemenese dialects. It covers their similiarities, differences, and multiple hypotheses on why FusHa has died out before and during the colonial period in the M.E. and why it is now making a comeback due to fundamentalism. Those interested in the linguistical diffusion of Arabic into other languages (i.e. Spanish, Turkish, Persian, Hindi, Indonesian languages) will find a brief chapter summarizing all of this info.I finished the book in 2 days, and found myself wanting more. Perhaps it's better to get this book from a university or public library rather than spend $30.00+. Hope this helps.

I sought this book to understand how the division arose between spoken Arabic with all its various dialects and standard written Arabic which is known as Fusha. In that regard the book satisfied my interest and gave me an idea of the key differences between the various dialects, but I was left with wanting to know more about how the linguistic division arose. Additionally, the book was too technical in some parts for the layman to comprehend. An elementary grasp of Arabic would suffice. And I would have found it easier if the Arabic quoted in the book was not transliterated in English but left with the Arabic script. All in all, it was a useful book and an eye opener into the complexities of Arabic.

This is a wonderful scientific read for all those who wish to delve deeply in the background of the Arabic language. It takes up the origins and similarities between the Semitic languages and goes into detail about the Maghrebi, Egyptian, Levantine, and Yemenese dialects. It even takes up the linguistic diffusion of Arabic into other languages (i.e. Spanish, Turkish, Persian, Hindi, Indonesian languages).A wonderful book to possess!

"You will sit back down with your brother, Anna, and resume the game," she scolded. "You will not get up again until you win. Life deals the cards, but it is up to us how we play them. The sooner you learn that, the better off you will be." - the fictionalized mother of Henry VIII's fourth wife, Anna of Cleves.I found this book gripping. Brilliant idea to ask seven gifted authors to write from the different perspectives of the six wives plus Henry. I felt the hope, struggles and ultimate despair of each of these unique women and carried these with me each time I had to put the book down. After I finished reading each queen's story, I also found myself searching on-line for more information, noting the facts that the authors threaded into their accounts. As the mother of a teenage daughter, I was especially horrified by what happened to the young Catherine Howard (beheaded at 16-17 years old) and how they carried her out of the palace toward her death kicking and screaming. Interesting that historians' perspectives on the young Catherine Howard have begun to shift in recent decades; she is perceived less as a whore and more as possibly the victim in the male-dominated relationships that led to her death. (Park's perspective in Fatal Throne is somewhere in between the two, leaning towards the latter.)I would highly recommend this to high school students interested in this period of time, especially young women. As a teacher, attempting to recommend books to students, I think I'd book talk this and leave for students to borrow. (You could read bits and pieces from Catherine Howard's chapter--because she was a teenage girl and your students might connect.) This might also make for amazing student-led conversations. Discussion questions might include, "How does each queen try to maintain some control of her own identity and sense of agency?" and "What is the effect of these attempts?" and "How are these women mirrors to what we see in the world now?"While I was reading this book, I went to see a play version of Jane Austen's "Sense and Sensibility." Wow. Three hundred years later...women were not beheaded, but the struggle to survive in a man's world was still real. And another two hundred years later, now, the struggle continues--in some places in the world in very similar ways, in other places, in very different ways. Lots of room for conversation with this book in hand.

I absolutely loved this book. I love that the short stories about the queens were each written by different authors. All of them start out at the end of the Queen's reign, with flashbacks. They are pretty much historically accurate.

"Fatal Throne: The Wives of Henry 8 Tell All" is a highly entertaining & a well thought out novel. The way this book is written is most unique, as each of these royal ladies are portrayed by a different author & another writer gives the King's point of view. The effect of this style helps to delineate each Queen as a separate special woman & impresses the reader of the variety in their outlooks on life and humanity of each unfortunate lady. I heartily recommend this novel for those who enjoy excellent historical fiction!

While this book is readable,it really tends to turn the women into caricatures. It doesn’t seem likely that Katherine of Aragon spent her time muttering about God in Spanish, for example. There are much better books about the six wives that give much deeper clues to their characters without making them into stereotypes.

I loved that each wife has her own very distinctive voice — it makes history more real.

This was a fascinating look at the six women who crossed paths with a cruel despot. I felt for all six and will reread this from time to time.

Very interesting and well written. Each section definitely had a different tone that felt like a different wife. It was a interesting new perspective on Henry VIII and his wife

The book came in good condition, that was an advanced readers Edition. The pages were intact and the book was as described

#65,518 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I had such high hopes for this book because I think the intended message, curiosity is meant to be cultivated and enjoyed, is very important. Incredibly however, this self-described master storyteller cannot tell a story. The entire effort is a gross violation of the first rule of writing "show, don't tell". The pontification goes on and on, and I kept waiting for some interesting anecdote from the writer's "curiosity conversations". Occasionally there was a spark, but rather than nurture it the author snuffed in out with the umpteenth reiteration of the importance of curiosity. The repetition finally overwhelmed me. I can't remember the last book I put down before finishing, but, alas, this one met that fate.

You would think Grazer, being in the movie industry knows about the difference between show and tell. All he does here is tell the same thing over and over. I could get a dictionary if I wanted to know what curiosity meant. Beyond the first chapter, there is very little to engage the reader. When it comes to writing a book, the man has shown himself to be an idiot. This book is as shallow as Hollywood cut-outs. A waste of money.

I had no idea who Brian Grazer was before seeing an interview with him promoting A Curious Mind. After hearing the concept and realizing how prominent he is in the entertainment industry I was really interested to read this book. Overall it is an easy read and definitely worth it.The interviews Grazer has done are absolutely fascinating. He only really shares maybe 10-15% of them in detail and most are with people that are completely inaccessible to regular society; such as multiple US Presidents, Fidel Castro, Andy Warhol, Mick Jagger, Oprah Winfrey, etc. Some are people that I wasn’t aware of (but probably should have been) such as the scientist who invented the atomic bomb and a South American woman activist who was held captive for more than a month by the government and lived to tell about the torture she endured and the tyrant dictator responsible. All of them made me want to learn more.Grazer also shares a good amount about his life, his work and his thought process behind the “curiosity interviews.” These were all interesting topics but unfortunately he gets a little redundant throughout the book. I only needed to be told about his box office successes once – not every other chapter. He does make a really great argument for the intellectual side of curiosity and how undervalued it is. I just would have preferred if there was one chapter dedicated to his life, and another at the end with what he wants to teach the reader around the importance and power curiosity can hold.My only other slightly negative feeling was that I really wanted to read more of Grazer’s interviews in detail. The end of the book lists pages and pages of names he has met over the past 20 years. There are so many intriguing people – it was almost disappointing not to get more. (i.e. Steve Jobs, Howard Stern, Mark Cuban, Jay Z…just to name a few). Hopefully he has another edition in the works!

I had high expectations for this but was disappointed. 44% of the book is taken up by a list of people Grazer spoke to, acknowledgements, author biographies and an index. I feel ripped off. Grazed says he didn't want the book to be about "his" curiosity but about what curiosity can do as a tool in all our lives. It would have been instructive for him to provide a few examples making the connection between a curiosity conversation and a decision he made and the impact on his life. The is a lot of philosophizing about the power of curiosity.... I'd prefer a little less tell, a little more show.

Hollywood producer Brian Grazer wants to know things, so he asks a lot of questions. He asks them of the people who know the things. He banks on his curiosity in order to fuel his passions, to create more success in business, to be a better husband and father, and to build human connections with those around him. And he recommends we all do the sameUsing the idea of curiosity as a road to a better life, Grazer, along with co-author Charles Fishman, encourages us all to live life with gusto, with bravery, and with a burning inquisitiveness to find out what drives others, what makes life worth living, and what makes us all so incredibly human. He gives us a peek into the “curiosity conversations” he’s had with political leaders, artists, scientists, and survivors, sharing his own inspiration for the movies and television series that he’s made and that we all love. Also woven in are stories of Hollywood from his early days as a producer (love those!) and stories of his grandmother, the kind of grandmother that every kid deserves (a little jealous, really). And though there is some repetition of the stories, the overall entertainment value (and educational/inspirational value) of Brian Grazer’s A Curious Mind is well worth the journey.I grabbed the audiobook on this one, and narrator Norbert Leo Butz is the ideal reader for this book. Aside from giggling every time I think of his name (seriously, I’m only like 8 years old on the inside), he read this book perfectly. There was not a wrong note throughout. And Grazer himself reads the introduction as a bonus.I’m a big fan of Grazer’s movie work and of Imagine Entertainment in general, so I was excited to read this book to see what I might learn about the inside of the Hollywood machine. But what I ended up learning was so much more, so much richer, that I fell in love with this book and the ideas within. Be smart. Be motivated. Be curious, and live a bigger life than you previously imagined!

Review

Praise for other books in the series Innovators National Science Teachers Association Recommends Innovators is a magnificent compilation of vignettes about creative and critical thinkers who have contributed to solving problems and improving existing products or processes. . . Innovators is a wonderful book. It is engaging, readable, and full of relevant information about important inventions and innovations and the context behind them. Readers will appreciate focus on equity of gender and race among the innovators throughout the book. This book does not contain glossy color photographs, but has cartoon style illustrations throughout. Innovators would be useful for teaching science or STEM classes, for background reading in classes, or can be read and used at home just because it is such an engaging book. As a fifth grade science teacher, I highly recommend getting a copy for any third to sixth grade classroom. Read the complete review online. Learning Magazine “What do Google and chocolate chip cookies have in common? Both were created by innovators! Learn about the people and products that have changed the world; then get your students innovating with 25 STEAM projects.” 3-D Engineering Science Books and Films ++: Highly Recommended “. . . This book is a wonderful resource for teachers and parents to use in the classroom and at home. It gets back to the basics with exciting activities that are hands-on that support the STEM program. When kids use their hands and work together to create a prototype, the outcomes are much higher when they are actively engaged in this type of learning. It gives students confidence in math while building problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. This is a book that teachers, parents, boys, and girls will enjoy as they learn about the many facets of the engineering world.” School Library Connection, April 2016 “Author Vicky V. May has produced a procedural book for the 21st century. Information covers electricity, chemistry, earth science, physics, and energy. . . The text, with fast facts, sidebars, and text boxes, is kid-friendly and the topics fit the science curriculum. Its guided inquiry approach makes this a useful tool for students seeking science fair ideas, teachers selecting creative outcomes to lessons, and learners who thrive on hands-on projects. Cartoon-like illustrations supplement the “how-to” aspect of the book nicely. Glossary. Index. Recommended”
