2 friends and I just arrived home from a 2.5 week Philippine Adventure. I must say that we were disappointed by this particular Lonely Planet Guide, as we discovered far more things to do and see, including many hidden gems that only Lonely Planet usually notifies travelers of, on blogs, Trip Advisor, and just plan ol' remembering things from Travel Channel Shows. So disappointed, in fact, that one of my fellow travel buddies is planning on writing Lonely Planet a letter. I didn't look through the Rough Guide or any other tour book, but there's no way that those can be worse than this edition. It just seemed like the authors were uninspired and compiled just enough to call it a book. Also, a lot of the things listed that Lonely Planet rated as mediocre turned out to be fantastic and vice-versa. I wish Rick Steves did more than just Europe!

I'm a bit disappointed. The information provided by this book is superficial and lacks important details . No mention of Oslob , which is one of the Philipinnes must-dos . No mention of any tour operators in Coron town- which is an essential information for solo travelers who would like to join groups and cannot arrange day-tours by themselves. On the whole , this book has no depth . After I bought it , I decided to try the 2017 edition of Rough Guide . This book's layout and information included looks much better and more insightful. Buy the Rough Guide instead .

This guidebook is the product of deeply uncurious minds. It goes on and on and on about beaches, diving, snorkling, with virtually no discussion or detail about architecture, tribal cultures or any of the things many folks travel to see. Sure, it will say there is a tribal market - but provide no information about tribal villages in the region, whether they exist, are worth visiting, etc. This is true even in an island as rich in tribal culture as Mindanao. In the chapters at the end of the book, there are about 2 pages whichever list, and very briefly describe, the tribes. The same is true where architecture is concerned. Spanish Colonial? Art Deco? Why bother? Also, information on museums is minimal. Yes, it tells you what they have, hours, etc. - but surely there are large museums in Manila that deserve more.I am about I read the Rough Guide, a series I dislike, to see if they are better. Otherwise, I'll use LP for treansportation and general information and rely on Google, and books, for real information.

This IS the book you want if going to the Philippines. I personally can vouch for the information on Luzon and it good all around book. In fact it is about the ONLY one on the Philippines which is actual updated every two years or so. It does pretty well on attractions which match the desires of the average tourist. Accommodations listings are abbreviated due more places than space to list them but the listings themselves are full and complete and generally accurate. The maps are good especially in locating the items listed in the travel guide. However, one suggests use of Google maps or MapQuest if one is exploring a local or nontouristy area. The security section is well written and the reader is well advised to read follow all the cautions and suggestions.

Kindle edition is difficult to navigate. The maps are pretty much useless. Lonely Planet isn't what it used to be. They are more focused on upmarket travellers than they used to be, and their preachy political correctness causes them to leave out a lot of information. The printed Jens Petersen book is a little older but far more useful.

I've been using Lonely Planet guidebooks for the last 10 years and for various regions of the world. This is probably the most preachy and negative guidebook I have ever come across. I typically purchase a guidebook months in advance of my trips to learn more about the area and get excited for my vacation. I pre-ordered this book and was excited to receive it on the day of its release for the 2012 version. However, this book seems to dwell on the negative aspects of visiting the Philippines rather than the positives, with statistics on prostitution and discouraging tourism to popular beach locations. While I appreciate awareness in travelers for the environment and other cultural concerns, I feel this book was written from a biased perspective of people who not only are not enthusiastic about their subject matter but prone to over-criticizing a country that has something to offer tourists from different backgrounds and interests. I will think again before ordering another guidebook from LP, especially to non-European countries.

This review is based on information about Manila and north. Many basic facts were either wrong or misleading (Sagada is neither a "mist filled jungle town" nor do hikes there need a guide). Travel information was extremely vague. I presume that if you are buying this book for the high-intensity tourist areas (think surfing and scuba/snorkel areas) then perhaps it would be worth it. We wanted to stick to the less populated areas and have a hiking based trip. If you are thinking of the same, I would suggest using a different travel guide. If you are aiming south, maybe this will work for you.

This book was ok - it had some good general information, but was lacking in most of the areas we were going in the Philippines. There was only a couple pages about Cebu and even less about Lapu Lapu and minimal on Dumaguete. The online kindle version that is just about the vistayas is much better (and repeats a lot of what this book has that is useful). I didn't even take the book with me on the trip.
