This introduction to Swamp Thing by Snyder and Paquette is flawless. The story revolves around two opposing forces: the rot (evil/death) and the green (plants/life), while a third force (the red) is mentioned and probably going to be a part of the story in future volumes. The drama by Snyder makes it so that the readers get involved with the characters quickly and is very effective. The horror element to the story is nice for keeping the reader paying close attention to every detail. This is why I recommend taking your time reading this comic. I took a couple of weeks just because of how powerful the story and art are. The art by Paquette is simply one of the best I've seen. Paquette shows a very unique style of art and usage of panels that adds to the worth of this comic. But the team that deserves the most credit is the colorist team. The colors in each page are so captivating. From joyful to dark, peaceful to violent. The combination of colors here is in perfect harmony and every page stands out on its own. This is a marvelous comic in every way and everyone 18+ should read it (it is pretty gruesome for younger readers).

I am a hard-core DC fan who was furious at the announcement of the New 52. I mean, Green Lantern had just redefined everything across the board. Quite a few of my favourite characters were changed in one detail or another. I'm still trying to read everything and figure out if I like all the changes.But Swamp Thing did NOT let me down!Still real (really really) creepy and a little hard to wrap your head around at times, the essence of being a peripheral character gave the story a perfect audience vehicle. Anyone who isn't a regular reader can pick this up and from word go, they get to see the state of things. And for the fans, we get to see our favourite warrior of the Green take centre stage as the one hero (reluctant as ever) who can save the whole of the world.Swamp Thing has always been a hard character to write because he is so very different from the bulk of mainstream comic characters. But Scott Snyder has made the character even more accessible than Alan Moore, who redefined and recharged the presentation of this staple character back in the 80's. The final panel in the story shows the fans that though it is the Swamp Thing we know and love, there are going to be a lot of changes that make sense and that we should enjoy.Any fan of comics, not just DC, should pick this TPB up. It is an amazing intro to the most unique super hero ever.And now I feel the need to go and watch Swamp Thing's movie.Read the book. I'd bet we're both in line for the release of the next chapter.

This volume collects issues 1-7 of the DC New 52.Alec Holland used to be dead. He is now alive. He has memories of being a...Swamp Thing. So did everyone else. It wasn't really him, though. The Green, the force behind all plant life on Earth and responsible for the Swamp Thing, is beckoning Alec to be the Swamp Thing for real. He can be their greatest champion in a struggle that is coming between their rival forces. The Red, the force behind all animal life on Earth, and occasional alliance of the Green. The Rot, the force behind death, and is flexing it's muscle and wanting to be the only force on Earth. Alec must decide to fight or not, and who or what he will fight for.Wow! Really incredible how this first volume goes. "Batman" and "American Vampire" writer Scott Snyder is telling a horror tale of apocalyptic proportions. He starts small introducing us to our characters and world and then has this vile force that grows and grows. Fans of previous incarnations of Swamp Thing (I have only read a few issues by Alan Moore) will be happy to know a lot of continuity is kept. It seems even the events of the "Brightest Day" event were kept in regards to Alec's return. Newcomers should not be deterred from this series as it is a great jumping on point and previous knowledge of Swamp Thing is not needed. Things are explained as needed and this is still a new different take with some new mythology.It is worth mentioning that this series really seemed planned for the old DCU universe as in the first issue Superman visits Alec asking him how he is doing and eludes to his death (Superman's that is) which a lot of fans are confused as to whether that is still cannon. It is not a huge deal and is easily forgettable and really not all that monumental in the grand scheme of things.This series also goes hand in hand with "Animal Man" fantastically written by Jeff Lemire. Animal Man Vol. 1: The Hunt (The New 52) is also available. The series do feel a bit different but have that bizarre horror vibe. Lemire makes his story seem more centered and small scale, whereas Snyder really gives a THE APOCALYPSE is coming atmosphere in his story. Snyder, as he has eluded to in interviews, got the Swamp Thing gig first and had more time to world build and through conversations with Lemire decided they should be complementary titles. The first volumes are not necessary to each other but going forward the titles and characters crossover frequently.Let us get to the art. Backup artists Marco Rudy and, for one issue, Victor Ibanez are solid and do a great job. They do not compare to lead artist Yanick Paquette however. Whoa! The style of grotesque mayhem these guys are able to display on a page is amazing. The way they set up a layout is really unique as well and something that should be taken advantage of more in this medium in the way that artist/co-writer J. H. Williams III does for "Batwoman" and all his series. When the pages are building up with the Rot becoming dominate the panels turn into jagged slices of a of a rotting pie, the lines between the panels filling with dark decay, skulls, and flesh. When the Green is becoming more prevalent on the page the panels become fluid and more in an odd fashion surrounded by vines and plant life of all kind spreading around leading the reader down, to the next page, or to a circle panel in the center of both pages.Swamp Thing starts an incredible journey written and drawn by two of the mediums best at the moment. Come on in and be immersed in this crazy and adventurous world.

The New 52 sees the rise of the Swamp Thing once again under the DC logo! Alec Holland is chosen once again to become the monster of the Green, the Swamp Thing and keep the Rot from taking over the Earth. However, Alec doesn't want to go back to the life of a monster and the memories of a girl he loved but never knew!For new readers, things get a little confusing at first with the Red, the Green, the Rot, the girl, etc. and all the back-story that comes with it. However, it's easier to follow once you start getting through it. Batman, Superman, and Aquaman make their brief cameos in the book and the art by Yanick Paquette and Marco Rudy look fantastic and "fleshy." Scott Snyder took up the writing and while it's no Court of Owls, it is a good story that definitely doesn't end with this book and will have you wanting Volume 2! Covering issues #1-7, it's not a long book and it's a softcover so it's easy to just pick up and read. All the textless covers are present as well as a bunch of bonus stuff like tons of cover sketches (colored and black-and-white), character sketches (with a name typo!), and cover layout concepts as well. Overall, it's a fun read and definitely worth picking up to follow the story!

They're in roughly chronological order, beginning with "The Keeper," and Michelle's struggle to care for and hide the Lunar princess in the basement of her farmhouse. Then there is "Glitches," where a small cyborg child is brought to live with her new stepfamily, only to be stranded with a cruel, bitter stepmother and bratty stepsister.And then there are stories for other characters -- Z, a boy torn from his family and forever altered into an elite, wolfish soldier for the Lunar Queen; Carswell, a wealthy young boy whose schemes and con games are interrupted by compassion; Cress, a young "shell" whose ingenuity causes her to be exiled into space; Winter's regret over the use of her gift prompts her to vow not to use it again, with terrible results; and Kai brings his beloved android to a simple mechanic's shop, with life-changing results.There is also "The Little Android," a bittersweet tale based on "The Little Mermaid," where a robot falls in love with a human. And there is a new novella called "Something Old, Something New," a tale taking place after the end of the series. Cinder and her friends reunite on Scarlet's farm for a very romantic occasion, and the cyborg has the chance to finally come full circle to where her journey began.It goes without saying that "Stars Above" is a collection that should only be read after one has finished the rest of the Lunar Chronicles, because it effectively gives away half the twists that take place in the series -- including the ending. While the novels are a complete story unto themselves, these short stories allow Meyer to fill in the cracks between her stories, exploring the characters at pivotal, life-changing points in their lives. For some, it's simply finding a new place in life. For others, it's being physically transformed into something new -- a cyborg or a wolf-man.One or two of the stories are a bit lightweight ("The Mechanic" is simply Kai and Cinder's first meeting from HIS point of view), but most of them have a wrenching quality at their heart. Most of these tales -- except for Carswell's, and the series' coda -- are stories of loss, pain, death, alienation and the cruelty of Queen Levana, in one way or another -- and Meyer's sleek, detailed writing creates some scenes of true horror (Winter being forced to carve up her own face) or spellbinding beauty ("But she was already vast and bright and endless").And it does help flesh out the characters even more, especially when they focus on a character who is either very internalized (Ze'ev) or doesn't appear much in the flesh (Michelle, Scar's grandmother). Cinder in particular is explored as a clumsy, amnesiac child who is offered little but scorn, slowly growing from her initial depressed blankness into a clever child who finds a niche where she belongs -- and her brief appearances throughout the stories allow us to see her grow in strength and confidence.This collection also has a few sample chapters from Meyer's forthcoming book "Heartless," which is based on Lewis Carroll's Wonderland books. It follows Catherine, the daughter of a bombastic Marchioness, who bakes a set of lemon tarts shortly before a royal ball.Best read after the rest of the series, "Stars Above: A Lunar Chronicles Collection" expands the characters' backstories, adding new richness and depth -- and providing a solid, satisfying coda to the series. Clever, bittersweet and beautifully written.

The Lunar Chronicles is a fantastic series with an amazing storyline, characters, and writing, but you have to admit that there was a lot going on in all of the books. Not to mention the multiple unanswered questions piling up. So to officially wrap up the series once and for all, Marissa Meyer released an engaging, captivating, heartbreaking collection of short stories that tied up any and all loose ends. Thank god, because after Winter ended, I still needed more of these beloved characters! There are a total of nine stories included in this collection, one of them a completely separate story set in the same world, and one of them an epilogue describing the aftermath of the entire series. I'm going to review each of these stories separately, going in the order they were written.The Keeper: 3.5 stars. An interesting look into how Michelle Benoit cared for Cinder before she became a cyborg, and how Cinder's and Scarlet's stories are intertwined. This one was okay, considering it was about a minor character who was less involved throughout the series, and it was fun to read and pick up on Scarlet's little cameos. However, I kind of wish we got to learn more about Logan Tanner and how he came in contact with Princess Selene. But overall, it was a great story.Glitches: 4.5 stars. This one picks up immediately after The Keeper, and tells us how Cinder made her way to New Beijing, met Adri, Pearl, and Peony, and rebuilt Iko, simultaneously finding a knack in her crazy new world. It also tells us what happened to the mysterious Linh Garan, the inventor of the bioelectricity device, and Cinder's stepfather. It was really interesting to find out how Cinder ended up in New Beijing, and her reactions to meeting her new family for the first time. It was definitely strange reading about a Cinder who didn't exactly stand up for herself, and was weak, scared, and lonely. I was glad when Cinder first realized her talent for fixing objects, and to see a sign of the familiar Cinder. Peony was super kind from the beginning, and that makes her storyline even more sad. This was a really good story, with great, descriptive writing, and an intriguing backstory.The Queen's Army: 4.5 stars. This short story was about Wolf (or Ze'ev), and the challenges he had to face when becoming a part of Levana's mutated wolf-soldier army. This was an especially intense story, and gives us the background I was searching for with Wolf. Since he isn't a very outgoing character, I feel like this is a very important addition to his story, and I can relate to him more now that I know more about him.Carswell's Guide To Being Lucky: 5 stars. Thorne is one of my favorite characters in this series, mainly because he reminds me so much of Han Solo. And I also think that Han Solo would have a similar backstory. Of course Thorne's jokes and quips were awesome, but seeing and understanding his past and how it influenced his later personality was fun to read about. It was great making connections between his 13-year-old self and the man he was going to become, such as his type of girl. Those similarities were really what sold this for me, and I felt like I was reading about the same Thorne having adventures on the Rampion.After Sunshine Passes By: 4 stars. Even the title makes me tear up a little bit. Cress's imprisonment on the satellite is heartbreaking, but knowing that she gets her happy ending in the end somehow made the whole ordeal worthwhile.The Princess and the Guard: 4.5 stars. Now THIS is what I was hoping for in Stars Above. Winter and Jacin are probably the two main characters we know the least about, especially since Jacin is so internalized, and their backstory was desperately needed. This one was mostly based on the cruelty of Levana, and the relationship between Winter and Jacin. Non-hallucinating Winter is just as awesome as crazy Winter, and sort of reminded me of Cinder and Cress in certain ways. We also get to see a tremendous show of strength on Winter's part, when Levana forces her to carve up her own face, and she refuses to let even a tear fall during the event. And although it was horrifying, this somehow makes her craziness even more endearing.The Little Android: 5 stars. This one got me the most. Even though it has no relation to the rest of the Lunar Chronicles, aside from a small cameo by Cinder, this is a very heartbreaking, tearjerking story that will definitely tug on your heartstrings. It's a retelling of the original Little Mermaid tale, and just like the original, this story has a very bittersweet ending. It chronicles the events that follow after an android falls in love with a human engineer, and rejects her original programming. This android reminded a lot of Iko, just a little quieter. It made me wonder if there a lot of independent androids in the Lunar Chronicles universe, but it mostly just made me tear up a lot.The Mechanic: 4.5 stars. Not an extremely important story, but a pretty good one. This is the first meeting between Kai and Cinder told from Kai's perspective, and it is very lightweight. I know some readers aren't huge fans of reverse POV's stories, but it is a really interesting and insightful addition that sheds some light on Kai's early motivations and personality, and of course, why he fell for Cinder.Something Old, Something New: 5 stars. An amazing, fun, detailed epilogue of the entire Lunar Chronicles. It tells the story of Cinder and the rest of the Rampion crew reuniting on Scarlet's farm for an unforgettable event. (cough, WEDDING, cough.) I am amazed by the family's lifestyle considering they claim to be Amish. I've read a lot about the Amish and find that the characters in this book go against everything the Amish believe in. Regardless, if you can look past that anomaly, this was a fairly good book to read.

A different type of Amish story. This deals with a young girl, Sadie,leaving behind her horse, when family moves to Montana. Of how she deals with the different climate, and neighbors. Of finding horses that need her healing ways. Maybe even love will come. Delightful reading, especially for YA.

A little drawn out with information from the story before, but all in all, it is an entertaining book. I’m interested to see what happens in the rest of the series.

I so enjoyed this book! It carried me along through the trials and tragedies faced by a young Amish woman and her family and how their faith helped them through. I couldn't put it down once I started and now, because it left me hanging, I'm off to read the sequel. The author does a great job of character development and building suspense into the story. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!

This is a well written Amish story. Unlike many others it is fairly modern which I found interesting. If you like Amish stories, you will probably like this one.

I really loved this book, it was hard to put down. It was even more great that the author is really an Amish lady. It even has a translation of a few phrases or sayings that were used in the back of the book. I have read the second book & can't wait to get the third I have ordered her trilogy "Lizzie searches for love". Great read...for those of you that are Christian Romance readers I don't think you'll be disappointed at all. I highly recommend this book.

I loved it ... not too many characters ...no sex scenes. Held my interest. If you are a lover of horses, I would highly recommend this book.

Enjoy books about Amish life, this one was different because it did not have the usual, marriage, kids & happy ending. If you love horses, you will enjoy this book.

John Suthers named his book about the job of a public prosecutor "No Higher Calling, No Greater Responsibility". He may probably be right. That brings into focus the people whose job it is to prosecute crimes. The responsibility and demands of the job requires utmost skill and professionalism in those who are charged with the job. John Bugliosi was an experienced prosecutor when he wrote "The Art of Prosecution". One way in which we can tell if it was a good book is to see if the tone of the book provides an immediate impact. practising one of the methods he preached, Bugliosi's writing style was clear, crisp and without hype. It was clinical, instructional, and inspiring.It was appropriate that he began by describing the tools that a prosecutor needs for the job, and he describes and explains the qualities needed to be a good prosecutor. He helps inexperience prosecutors in knowing what and how to prepare a case for trial, examples of court room techniques were carefully and aptly chosen. He has a chapter on the 'voir dire", a mini-trial within the trial to determine the admissibility of disputed evidence.I found his advice on the opening address and closing summation to be wonderfully written. These are the two aspects of a trial that a prosecutor (and defence lawyer) must grasp because everything else that happens in the trial, as Bugliosi explains, depend on how the prosecutor opens and closes his case. This book was written for the jury trial so in the bulk of cases in which the new prosecutor is likely to take to trial are likely to be before a professional and experienced judge sitting without jury. Some of the techniques recommended might not be appropriate without some adjustments. His advice to appeal to the juror's common sense, emotion, and morality, for example, may have to be toned down when a lawyer is addressing a judge less the submission becomes patronising and pedantic; which is a sure way of annoying the judge.

This is like a how to guide to prove a case. As a prosecutor, this book is a fantastic a resource for advice on case preparation/caseload management.But in my opinion, where it really shines is teaching trial advocacy for ASA's/ADA's. No longer do you need to scour Trial Ad books -filled with advice for defense attorneys and civil litigators - for a nugget of prosecutorial guidance. This book goes through jury selection to summation giving techniques and examples that are tremendously helpful if you're willing to put the time in. This is a book that you can study for hours at a time, and while it can be dry at times, it's well worth it. I've personally used some of Bugliosi's techniques in trial with great success. This is really the best around if you want to learn how to prove your case and beat the defense.

As a 3rd year assistant prosecutor who works in an office with next to no guidance, this book has become my manual. After using The Art of Prosecution to win my 1st jury trial, I purchased a copy for 3 other APs! It's the prosecutor's version of Thomas Mauet's Trial Advocacy.

A bit dry, but that's kind of the nature of criminal prosecution. If you're a prosecutor, you should own this book.
