It was an incredible world. I totally loved this book and did not want it to end. I have no idea why Robin did not want to write this book, it was wild. I have read all of Robin's books and there are so many different worlds that she created. I loved all of them,In this world you are either a slave or owner, and no one is unhappy. I loved that there are no men, I'm not a man hater but I am a lesbian and this world is better without the men. Well there was men but they left, It just works. I highly recommend this book. It is wild but also a lot of fun.

This is a weird, strange book that the author told us not to buy. Its not my taste but I'm a fan of Robin's so I still bought it. If you don't mind slavery, check it out. Its way outside my wheelhouse.

I really think the author is being way too harsh; this book is beautifully written and really makes you think. On one hand it's actually a book with a happy ending -romantically, the main character gets the girl, marriage and family-, and yet the main character basically betrays everything she believes in and directly causes the downfall of her culture and nation - all the while trying to do the right thing. The entire slavery aspect felt like an interesting contrast to the western ideals of personal freedoms, and I enjoyed it greatly. For fans of Robin Roseau, this book almost felt like an extreme version of the 'Galatzi Trade' series, I certainly recognized many of the same dynamics in the relationships.I only have two main points of criticism of this book, and the reason I won't grant it 5 stars:1) For a book of 800+ pages, there were way too many characters with few distinctive features and they all kind of blur together. Most characters go by two different names, and I had serious trouble telling them apart and remembering who was who. I think this is mostly because almost no actual descriptions of people were used - at most, a single descriptive feature was used for a character and we are then supposed to remember them from that. For a book about lots and lots of sex and personal relationships, it makes everyone and everything seem a little shallow. On the same note, "then we went to her home and played the rest of the night" repeated half a dozen time does not a meaningful sexual relationship make :)2) On the topic of 1), it becomes even more frustrating when the main character's relationship with her sister, one of perhaps three characters whose relationship we actually *do* get invested in, ends up only being teased throughout the entire book (I know this sounds weird, but it makes sense in the context of the book). I would have absolutely loved if the main character somehow got over her 'issues' and had some kind of romantic or sexual relationship with her - the sister seemed open to the idea, and it would beautifully cement her 'cultural conversion' to Ressaline. The actual romantic interest of the main character turned out almost as shallow as the other side characters.. I think she operated a nightclub? It's obvious the main character loved her, but I couldn't even tell you what she looked like.As a final note, the idea was super interesting and if you can stand chapter after chapter of comically kinky sex, I would gladly recommend this book. I read all night and finished it in a single setting, I couldn't let it go.

I was not happy as this story concluded. I think because the world and people ticked me off. This wasn’t because it is a bad story/read. It’s not. It kept you interested and engaged in the characters. It was because there eventually seemed to be no good. Even those who were good were either abused or went along or were in the end only chemically happy. The main character in the end was corrupted or maybe cowered to think what was done to them was something she could do to others herself. It’s a complicated story. Some of the sex coupling does go beyond what many are comfortable with. The author says don’t read this book but who really wouldn’t when presented with that statement.

This is a terrible book. the only thing the nation of women can do with a power over a strange plant substance is too use it to have enormous power & multi orgasmic sex sessions that determine your place in society. we hear that they suffered through starvation but haven't tried to use this stuff for anything else. They stage control contests with the outcome dependibg on how you deal with orgasms. This author hasa running history with power and control in their work. No one in a relationship is ever equal but this book took it too far at least for me

Potential spoilers ahead.. it's just as well written as everything else from this author and I've highly enjoyed all the other things that I've read. This one has some very dicey moral issues. It's not .. bad. But it's not good either. It asks the question if you are stuck between a rock and a hard place which do you pick. Which do you embrace and cultivate. Most stories root for the underdog this one has the underdog win but only by becoming the 'bad' guy. And it also asks is the bad guy really the worst option.

Similar themes to many of Robin's books, only more so. The back story is a little weak but since it's only there to provide a plausible reason for the story, it's not really a problem.

This book was an interesting read but I can't imagine a society like it working all that well but I guess if folks are drugged to be happy or magiced that way no one will revolt.

#225,789 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This book delivers on the promise stated in its subtitle. The first chapter provides a brief history of consumer products. The second chapter talks about where great product ideas come from, and the book then progresses from there through market research, finance, prototyping, manufacturing, and other topics (for a total of 20 areas of expertise), culminating with growing into the future. The author is an entrepreneur, having founded The Grommet. If you visit thegrommet online, you'll have a deeper appreciation for her background. You can also gain that appreciation just by reading the book. Note: She is currently an Entrepreneur in Residence at Harvard Business School.Ms. Pieri doesn't dispense cookie-cutter advice or something as banal as "ten steps to success" as if you can "paint by numbers" your way to business success by copying someone else. Instead, she starts with the assumption the reader is a maker; a person who has a product idea and wants to bring it successfully to market. The steps involved will vary, as will the resources needed, depending upon what your idea is and what your market is. Using this assumption as a starting point, she guides the serious maker through the various areas of expertise needed to get a product from the idea stage to something that people are buying. A reader who applies her insights can sell that product profitably. You can think of this book as a guide to helping you help yourself. The author made extensive use of examples, throughout the book. I don't mean fictional "what if" examples or generic ones. I mean she used examples of what real small businesses did, often including quotes from the maker who founded the business. The richness here really adds to the book's usefulness as a guide to success. You have not just the abstract idea but an example of how someone used it or is still using it.I have an MBA and successfully run two businesses, so I have some perspective from which to judge any book that purports to provide business guidance. This book does that very well. If you fit the target reader profile (someone who intends to make something or has made something and wants to profitably bring it to market), this book belongs in your collection. You can use it as a guide on an ongoing basis. If you have some other business model, perhaps based on a service you provide, the book is less applicable in the details but the same principles mostly apply. For example, your service business doesn't manufacturer products but you can take a similar approach to designing you services. You won't have inventory to manage, but you'll still need to manage your finances and do many other things that a product-based entrepreneur does. This book consists of a 12-page introduction, 21 chapters running 299 pages, and "About the Author" page, and about 2.5 pages of backnotes/references.

People have been making gadgets and tinkering with improving things since early civilization. But computers, 3D printers and the Internet has brought a huge shift in how many people are involved in what is now referred to as the Maker Movement. Currently in the US, approximately 135 million people identify as part of the Maker Movement. Most of the people who refer to themselves as Makers treat it as a hobby – something to satisfy an itch. For those who are serious about making a business as a Maker, creating and bringing a product to the market then start with How We Make Stuff Now by Jules Pieri. If you are a consultant or advisor who works with Makers, then you certainly need this as a reference tool.Ms. Pieri is cofounder and CEO of The Grommet, a company which helps Makers bring their products to the market. She shares the real-world experience of having worked with over 3,000 Makers. The information in her book is not theory but a collection of wisdom from the trenches. In her book, Ms. Pieri covers everything an aspiring Maker needs to know. The first and most important step is determining if your idea solves a problem or is “a solution looking for a problem.” She also covers design and documentation, IP, prototyping, raising capital, manufacturing, packaging, marketing, distribution and many other topics. Each chapter covers a different topic. She goes over what you need to know and then presents actual case studies of how the concepts work in actual practice. The book is well written in a conversational format. The concepts are easy to understand and well developed. The topics are presented in a logical time format – the way you would progress with taking your idea from abstract to retail distribution.A must read for anyone seriously considering bringing a new product to market.

Ivy Aberdeen's Letter to the World, by Ashley Herring Blake

From School Library Journal

Gr 4–6—A sweet story of a first crush and being stuck in the middle. In the aftermath of a tornado, Ivy and her family find themselves without a home and dependent upon the kindness of others. Already often overlooked as the middle child, Ivy feels even more invisible now that her family of six shares a small hotel room. What's worse, Ivy is developing feelings for another girl at school; but after hearing the way her older sister reacted when her best friend came out, Ivy doesn't know who to talk to. Filling a much-needed gap in middle grade literature, this story addresses not just the topic of a first crush, but also the invisibility frequently felt by middle children. The protagonist struggles with the disappearance of a beloved journal after a tornado and a lack of privacy while sharing one room with her entire family. She is too young to help care for her twin brothers but old enough that she is often forgotten about. Ivy doesn't feel comfortable discussing her blossoming romantic feelings with her family but is able to find a trusted adult in whom to confide. Young readers will find Ivy's challenges very real and will sympathize with her choices, both good and bad. Give to fans of Tim Federle's Better Nate than Ever or Barbara Dee's Star-Crossed. VERDICT Relatable and engaging. A first purchase for public and school libraries.—Jenni Frencham, Columbus Public Library, WI

There's a lot that I like here. The big and little things that are hard when you lose everything. Family relationships in the midst of a lot of change (both from newborn twins and the tornado). Friendships and trust and being open with each other. (So, so much about trust.) How all of our relationships can be tied together. Misunderstandings between sisters. All the secrets about each other that we don't know, even when we think we do. People expressing themselves through art.My absolute favorite part of this book is the friendship/mentorship that forms between Ivy and Robin. It's so refreshing and important to see an older queer character talking to a younger one, especially with Ivy still trying to figure everything out. I loved how much Robin supported Ivy and how she assured her that it was okay to not be sure.I liked how the friendship between June and Ivy developed, and I liked that it developed as a friendship in addition to developing as a crush (for Ivy). The story line of Ivy feeling pushed out of her family (and how that plus other things affected her relationship with Taryn) was really well-done, too.Variants on "just friends" were used three times.CW: tornado, displacement, accidental and undesired outing in a couple of cases (but not to lots of people)

This was amazing! Such a great story and so beautifully written. I hope this book will get into the hands of so many kids. And adults. Because it’s a story that’s relevant for all of us. Ivy is just trying to figure out who she is, how she fits in with her family, and how she relates to the world around her. So it’s definitely one that’s moving for everyone. But I’m especially excited that this book will be out there for young girls (and boys, too, of course) who are starting to make that transition from kid to teen and adult and are just trying to figure out what that means and how to deal with all of the changes that are happening to them and around them. I think a lot of kids will understand how Ivy feels throughout this book. Because while some of her experiences are unique (tornado), most of what she’s feeling and experiencing is pretty universal.I love that Ivy is surrounded by so many people who love her just the way she is. It’s the message I wish every kid got and what I hope my kids feel from me. She struggles throughout the book to try and figure out what her new feelings mean and seeming invisible to her family while also worrying about what they’ll think of her when they learn the truth. She also discovers along the way that the journey is really about her learning to accept herself for who she is more than what anyone else might think of her. I liked her family and her best friend. I do wish we could have learned a little more more about all of them because they are all so important to Ivy and I really love best friend and sister stories but ultimately I know this story is about Ivy and it’s great just the way it is.I really hope everyone will pick up this story and read about Ivy. And I hope it’ll show young kids that it’s okay to feel the way you feel. And it’s okay to not have all the answers to everything all the time. And it’s okay to wait until you’re ready to tell people. But it’s also good to have someone to talk to.There’s a lot happening on these pages and it was amazing to read and I’m so excited for this book to get published and to be available to all the young kids. I hope you all love it as much as I did! Plus, that title and cover are just amazing. Put this book on your MUST-READ list immediately!I received this book for free the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Oh what a middle grade book this was! It made my heart happy and I cried but it was good tears at the end. Ivy is 12 when her family home is destroyed by a tornado. Her family was already in a bit of a mess with new twin brothers and learning how she fits in with her older sister. Also she’s got some questions of her own she doesn’t know how to talk about when her drawing journal goes missing. I loved Ivy, honestly I loved the whole book!

I am 27 years old, an aspiring kid lit writer and early childhood ed student and I loved this book. Had I had this novel in my hands as a baby lesbian in 6th grade I think I would have been able to accept myself much more easily and felt less alone. Thank you to the author for writing such a lovely, honest book that can be enjoyed by generations young and old (I gave a copy to my aunt and my grandma to read; they both LOVED IT!!!)

This story was an absolute pleasure to read. There are so many wonderful things I could ramble on about, but if I could share one its my admiration of the courage and perseverance of the protagonist, Ivy Aberdeen. I read it to possibly recommend to present/future students, but any lovers of middle grade fiction with strong willed characters should love this book as much as I did. This book falls under that category of "being envious of others who get to read it for the first time".

This book warmed my heart. Ivy is so relatable and deeply good. She loves with her whole heart and wants to be loved in the same way. The author weaves color and art into the entire novel, which could have easily become a tiresome trope; but instead helped paint a vivid world around Ivy. It was beautiful.I occasionally felt like the family was neglectful and heartbreaking to a point that I didn't always believe it; but then, they've been through a lot and I guess you really never know what's believable until you're in it. This book was quick and easy to read in many ways, but was also complex for my heart. I am a better person for reading it.A quick nod to Robin who was not often present in the book, but who gave Ivy strength, courage, and light when she needed it most. If everyone had a role model like Robin, the world would be a better place. What a lovely book. I'm so glad it popped up in my search when I was hoping for a new, beautiful book to read.

I did a little bit of research at the beginning of the year on the blood type diet after a friend of mine mentioned it to me. I was having all kinds of issues from anxiety, acid reflex, digestion issues, and other health problems. These issues came on all of the sudden as I previously would eat healthy for my blood type without knowing it. I suddenly changed my diet and venturing into other foods. I began to slowly poisoning my body without realizing it until my body started acting all kinds of crazy. After reading this book it began to make sense and became clear to me to go back to my old eating habits. I am now starting to feel better just after a few days. I will buy Dr. Adamo's other books as there are other blood types in my household

Will probably work for many typ o people. I suggest really knowing your own body. He insists that type o people have problems getting their blood to clot. I have problems keeping mine from clotting. So I suggest a caveat to any so called health guru.

I found that the book was very small; more like a booklet. However, the information was interesting. It seems the foods I should be eating were some of my favorites anyway. I discovered in order to follow the diet plan, not surprisingly, I will have to modify and eliminate some foods, and drinks like some citrus, grains, and coffee! That was another interesting change that I found myself doing just recently: limiting coffee and drinking more green tea, which the diet recommends! That was really an "aha!" moment. It seemed that my body was "craving" green tea rather than coffee. It was great to discover that green tea is the better choice! I look forward to improved health, energy, and less digestive issues that the diet plan promises!

Love this condensed version of the book! I have removed certain foods from my diet and the results have been really good. I have lost a few pounds, no more bloating and burping, etc. Friends have noticed a difference in me. I suggest that you try the book based on your blood type if you want to improve your life. Getting ready to order the cookbook based on blood type for myself and a friend has asked that I order her a copy of the food beverage and supplement book based on her blood type.

Great book. I actually ordered two. I finally see why I could never lose weight, despite being health conscious and working out my weight sometimes ballooned or I could not lose. I learned I was eating all the foods my blood type rejected. I once ate yogurt and would be very ill..turns out diary is not good for 0 negative. I am having digestive woes and after reading this book I discovered out 75% of the foods I thought was healthy was not beneficial for my blood type!If you are unable to lose weight or having digestive issues read this book: it might help!

Great book. The app for $3.99 also has everything this book does. Been a great way to eat.

Very basic guidance doc that references the prerequisite "Eat Right For Your Type". This doc is good for a quick reference if you are out shopping, on vacation, or dining out only. Nice handy guide. Would recommend the book to become familliar with concept then purchase this smal guide as a quick reference guide...JMO.

Best thing I have ever done for myself. Blood sugars are dropping. Losing weight without exercise. Feel better mentally and physically. It is a little hard to give up my favorite foods. I cheat a little, but this lifestyle change is worth it. Acid Reflux GONE! Stopped taking medication for Acid Reflux and now I don't have to. Have cut my insulin amounts in half. Still lowering it everyday. Best thing ever.

I have received my copy and appreciate the effort put into it. The first part is a good primer for almost anybody working with LEGO and sort of reminds me of the Master Builder Academy, but condensed into the essentials. The history section is nice and allows people to see where LEGO trains have come from and identify various sets and parts from the 60's on. The part where various techniques for building trains is a boon to all and exceptionally detailed. I love how it's accomplished in the old school method of instructions. All told, an excellent work that will appeal to novices and seasoned builders alike.

Book has some great insights into building your own train, however the techniques used seemed somewhat dated from today's lego set offering and some of the great creations people post out in various lego fan websites, was hoping to see some advanced techniques to model more modern trains and cars.

My grandson is a serious train fanatic and has more legos than you could ever imagine. This was the perfect birthday present for him. Lots of colorful pics. and details on how to build individual trains in the back of book. Very satisfied with the product and the service. Thank you!

A book for Lego train fans. It show you how to build engines and car.

AMAZING book with great details and awesome photos! Brought back a lot of memories reading this book! I recommend it to any LEGO and train lover! I learned A lot as well! Thank you!

We're a lego loving family and love all things lego and trains- so this is a great addition to our collection.

very well written book and very informing

You have to really like Lego trains to enjoy this and then again it is still to specific towards certain building techniques only. Doesn't cover entire Lego train history

This is the first book by this author that I have read, and it won’t be the last. I loved that it was a clean hockey romance and I thought the characters were great! I can’t wait to read more.

I liked this story. It's a cute clean romance about a new addition to the NHL team, the Fury, finding himself drawn to a woman who doesn't date hockey players. The romance and chemistry between the two leads was sweet. And I was successfully entertained. But a few things about this story bugged me. 1) There are minor grammatical errors and editing mistakes. You'll catch them while reading the book. The biggest one is that a secondary character's name changes from Sasha to Sophia as the story progresses. 2) To me, Eric's characterization wasn't believable or consistent. I won't give spoilers, but his actions at the beginning of the book are completely contrary to how they are at the end. With no growth in between to make you believe the change. I don't exactly believe his reasons for why he acted the way he did either. 3) I wish there was more balance in the relationship between the leads. Reese ended up apologizing and making things up way more, even if Chloe was in the wrong. I wanted there to be moments where she fought for him.I don't think these flaws are enough to keep you from enjoying the story, but they might affect your flow while reading the book. And I liked this story enough to be curious about the next installation, but I don't think I'll read this again.

Romance, clean; This was a fun read, cute back story to both characters. Loved the way the two main characters gradually came together and the sincere heartfelt appreciation they both had for each other. Chloe and Reese were characters that you learned to fall for as they fell for each other. Fun hockey setting, and Reese being new on the team was a fun complication to their falling for each other and his falling for her. Chloe figuring out her heart as she tried to keep her determination not to date a hockey player made for a cute complication for her heart and his. Told from alternating points of view, it was a nice escape for an afternoon.

Another wonderful book to read. Even though I do not know anything about hockey, I really enjoyed the romance story. You do not have to be a sports lover to thoroughly enjoy this book.

I loved Chloe & Reese's story! I can't wait to read the next book in the series. I love how she has a bit of self discovery, but it's a fun read... I couldn't put it down, so stayed up WAY TOO LATE reading it. Worth it though!! Great read!

Chloe is selfless to a fault, looks after everyone else, but at what cost? Reese is smitten but can he win Chloe over? And what about her brother? Loved the story, shed a few tears along the way too. Felt a bit shortchanged at the ending though. I hope there's another part to this story in the works. There's so much more of Chloe and Reese to explore!

My first clean hockey romance and I enjoyed it. Wish the editing would have been better and maybe it could have focused on some of the attraction between them without being to explicit. All in all a good read.

A great story about finally committing and being public with love

I suggest they might want to read a copy of this book while in the Hamptons this summer.” —Joseph E. If you want to be part of the solution, you should read this book.” —Ai-jen Poo, director, National Domestic Workers Alliance   “A brilliant, rising voice of our era takes us on a journey among the global elite in his search for understanding of our tragic disconnect. Thought-provoking, expansive, and timely.” —Isabel Wilkerson, author, The Warmth of Other Suns“Winners Take All boldly exposes one of the great if little-reported scandals of the age of globalization: the domestication of the life of the mind by political and financial power and the substitution of ‘thought leaders’ for critical thinkers. It not only reorients us as we lurch out of a long ideological intoxication; it also embodies the values—intellectual autonomy and dissent—that we need to build a just society.” —Pankaj Mishra, author of Age of Anger“In this trenchant and timely book, Anand Giridharadas shows how the winners of global capitalism seek to help the losers, but without disturbing the market-friendly arrangements that keep the winners on top. He gives us an incisive critique of corporate-sponsored charities that promote frictionless ‘win-win’ solutions to the world’s problems but disdain the hard, contentious work of democratic politics. An indispensable guide for those perplexed by the rising public anger toward ‘change-making’ elites.” —Michael J. Sandel, author of What Money Can’t Buy: The Moral Limits of Markets

As someone who has spent many years seeking/securing grants from foundations, and almost 12 years working as a senior program officer at a large community and large private foundation, I believe my "headline," while humorous, sums up my understanding of philanthropy and one of the major themes of Winners Take All. I share another concern well described by Anand, namely, the extremely serious abdication of public responsibility for basic human needs. In large part, this is because the very rich, the gatekeepers they employ, and their political allies have intentionally worked to limit the viability of our public sector since the Reagan presidency. In fact, as Anand also notes, this has been done in various ways since the early part of the 20th century when the first large foundations were created by Rockefeller and Carnegie. I believe Anand would agree with my view that the rich use philanthropy and the entire nonprofit sector as a diversion from a strong public sector which, in these times, would be at least some form of American social democracy. If I could afford it, I would buy copies of Winners Take All for anyone who wants to understand the role of charity and philanthropy in maintaining existing power relations by limiting the power and effectiveness of a viable, democratic public sector. We must address the dominance of unaccountable, self-serving elites with democratic, public alternatives as Anand so brilliantly, courageously, and elegantly elucidates in Winners Take All.

I picked up this book thinking it was about me and my friends. It's not, though. Despite the subtitle, Winners Take All is not about the entrepreneurs and investors who are involved in socially responsible businesses whose mission is to change the world. The sole exception is the author's brief excursion in the epilogue into the B Corporation movement, in which I've been involved since the beginning. And he appears not to understand what B Corps are about."Elite-led, market-friendly, winner-safe social change"In Winners Take All, author Anand Giridharadas zeroes in on growing economic inequality in America. As he notes at the outset, "When the fruits of change have fallen on the United States in recent decades, the very fortunate have basketed almost all of them." His culprit? "Elite-led, market-friendly, winner-safe social change." This is the set of beliefs held by the people who attend the World Economic Forum at Davos and gather at such other places as Aspen and the Clinton Global Initiative. In reviewing this book for the New York Times, Nobel Prize-winner Joseph Stieglitz described them as "an elite that, rather than pushing for systemic change, only reinforces our lopsided economic reality—all while hobnobbing on the conference circuit and trafficking in platitudes." Giridharadas calls their mindset MarketWorld."An ascendant power elite" that seeks to do good by doing well"MarketWorld," he explains, "is an ascendant power elite that is defined by the concurrent drives to do well and do good, to change the world while also profiting from the status quo. It consists of enlightened businesspeople and their collaborators in the worlds of charity, academia, media government, and think tanks."Giridharadas takes on the elite consulting firms as well, citing McKinsey and its peers in the industry as among the culprits. The values they all promote are those of the marketplace; its proponents always talk about opportunities to solve problems, never about those who are responsible for creating the problems in the first place. The author distinguishes between public intellectuals (good) and thought leaders (bad). In his view, the former are primarily academics free of commercial influences. The latter have fallen for MarketWorld values, hook, line, and sinker. And that strikes me as simplistic. It would be naive to imply that major corporations haven't made inroads into academia. The eight billionaires who own half the world's wealth are an easy targetAuthor Anand Giridharadas aims his most powerful broadsides at easy targets such as the multimillionaire and billionaire leaders of the tech and financial industries. Can anyone seriously argue that Amazon, Google, Facebook, and Goldman Sachs are addressing the economic inequality that Giridharadas identifies as the central issue? No matter what their leaders say, they're clearly part of the problem, not the solution. As I write today, Jeff Bezos of Amazon can claim a net worth of $162.9 billion. Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg is "worth" $60.4 billion. The Google guys, Larry Page and Sergei Brin, weigh in at $54.1 billion and $52.7 billion, respectively. These four men are among the eight billionaires whose collective net worth is equal to all the wealth of half of the world's population. Yes, just eight billionaires. And Goldman Sachs possesses assets of nearly $1 trillion. How could anyone suggest that these people would even consider lobbying the federal government to adopt policies that would lessen economic inequality in America? Yet Giridharadas complains that they don't.Winners Take All is based on the premise that these would-be do-gooders call the shots in the American economy and dominate the political debate. The author implies that economic inequality would quickly shrink if these folks were to work for genuine social change. However, this is far from the truth. Most wealthy people in the United States are conservative Republicans who do not pretend to be change agents. And they exert far greater power and influence in American society than the Davos and Aspen set. In today's political discourse, the Heritage Foundation and its peers among Right-Wing think tanks and the institutions of the Christian Right wield far more power in setting government policy at both the federal and state levels than the "enlightened elite" Giridharadas writes about.Bill Clinton's central role in making the problem immeasurably worseIn the author's view, it's not just clueless businessmen or Republicans who are at fault. Bill Clinton also comes in for justifiable criticism. His "Third Way" between left and right effectively reversed the Democratic Party's commitment to helping the less fortunate in our society. Remember mass incarceration? Financial deregulation? So-called welfare "reform?" Bill Clinton institutionalized the neoliberal consensus that Ronald Reagan had brought to the White House a decade previously—and the consequences were devastating, years before Donald Trump entered the political scene. On this point, Giridharadas is right on the money. (Pun intended.)Just for example, deregulation, including the repeal of Glass-Steagall, was among the root causes of the Great Recession that struck in 2008. Don't forget that millions lost their homes, and millions more lost their jobs, in that calamitous economic downturn. Democrat or Republican—it doesn't seem to matter. Not a single US President over the past half century has taken any significant step to address America’s growing inequality in wealth and income. Barack Obama was by far the best of them, but he also:** named as his top economic advisers many of the same people whose policies in the 90s brought down the economy in the 2000s;** prevented the prosecution of the bankers who caused the crash; and**failed to question the prevailing bipartisan love affair with Corporate America.Who will lead society toward viable solutions? Here's the crux of the matter, as Giridharadas sees it: "What is at stake is whether the reform of our common life is led by governments elected by and accountable to the people, or rather by wealthy elites claiming to know our best interests." It doesn't matter how well-intentioned they might make themselves out to be. If they don't actively work to raise estate and income taxes, drive private money out of politics, provide universal free healthcare, and work to elect people committed to serving the majority of America's people, they're part of the problem. Nothing else they do can be a solution. And to that I say amen. What other reviewers say about the book** In his review of the book, Joseph Stieglitz notes that "Giridharadas is careful not to offend. He writes on two levels—seemingly tactful and subtle—but ultimately he presents a devastating portrait of a whole class, one easier to satirize than to reform."** Kirkus Reviews leads its commentary with this: "Give a hungry man a fish, and you get to pat yourself on the back—and take a tax deduction." The review concludes that Winners Take All is "A provocative critique of the kind of modern, feel-good giving that addresses symptoms and not causes."** Writing in Forbes, B Lab co-founder and managing partner Jay Coen Gilbert terms Winners Take All a "new and important book." Before launching into a defense of Certified B Corporations, Gilbert notes that "In provocative style and with compelling substance, Giridharadas speaks truth to power, calling elites to account for giving so much lip service to 'changing the world,' while mostly upholding an unacceptable status quo."

Winners Take All is a self-help book for the uber wealthy. I say this somewhat in jest, but, as Anand Giridharadas writes in his acknowledgements, his purpose for writing this book was as an “inquiry into the apparatus of justification” that permits the wealthy to win at all costs, including extractive business practices that result in growing inequality and environmental damage, only to position themselves as having the answers to the problems that they have contributed to creating and accelerating. While his focus is on the uber wealthy, Giridharadas tenaciously exposes a universal human deficit: We all struggle to recognize our two selves—the person we aspire to be and the person we are. What continuously came up for me as I read Winners Take All is the need people have to be seen as good, but not being able to make the personal sacrifices (i.e. not winning) that real goodness demands. This is, by far, one of the most important books published in the 21st century. Giridharadas articulates, with great storytelling, the illusion that has gripped us—particularly Americans,—allowing, if not engineering, injustice and inequality into our way of life: There are several ways to define it, including market mindset or really materialism where money elevates the monied by virtue of their market acumen to rule. He calls them MarketWorlders—people who apply a market perspective to solving social issues. Winners Take All offers all of us who have ever dreamt of changing the world to interrogate our motives, to think about who we are inviting to the table, and to understand that who we are, the experiences we’ve had, and the questions we ask or don’t ask determine the who, what, when, where and how of change. And if the only change we can imagine insists on us not losing comfort, reputation, influence, power, and so on, then we’ve already limited the change that is possible.
