It was an incredible world. I totally loved this book and did not want it to end. I have no idea why Robin did not want to write this book, it was wild. I have read all of Robin's books and there are so many different worlds that she created. I loved all of them,In this world you are either a slave or owner, and no one is unhappy. I loved that there are no men, I'm not a man hater but I am a lesbian and this world is better without the men. Well there was men but they left, It just works. I highly recommend this book. It is wild but also a lot of fun.

This is a weird, strange book that the author told us not to buy. Its not my taste but I'm a fan of Robin's so I still bought it. If you don't mind slavery, check it out. Its way outside my wheelhouse.

I really think the author is being way too harsh; this book is beautifully written and really makes you think. On one hand it's actually a book with a happy ending -romantically, the main character gets the girl, marriage and family-, and yet the main character basically betrays everything she believes in and directly causes the downfall of her culture and nation - all the while trying to do the right thing. The entire slavery aspect felt like an interesting contrast to the western ideals of personal freedoms, and I enjoyed it greatly. For fans of Robin Roseau, this book almost felt like an extreme version of the 'Galatzi Trade' series, I certainly recognized many of the same dynamics in the relationships.I only have two main points of criticism of this book, and the reason I won't grant it 5 stars:1) For a book of 800+ pages, there were way too many characters with few distinctive features and they all kind of blur together. Most characters go by two different names, and I had serious trouble telling them apart and remembering who was who. I think this is mostly because almost no actual descriptions of people were used - at most, a single descriptive feature was used for a character and we are then supposed to remember them from that. For a book about lots and lots of sex and personal relationships, it makes everyone and everything seem a little shallow. On the same note, "then we went to her home and played the rest of the night" repeated half a dozen time does not a meaningful sexual relationship make :)2) On the topic of 1), it becomes even more frustrating when the main character's relationship with her sister, one of perhaps three characters whose relationship we actually *do* get invested in, ends up only being teased throughout the entire book (I know this sounds weird, but it makes sense in the context of the book). I would have absolutely loved if the main character somehow got over her 'issues' and had some kind of romantic or sexual relationship with her - the sister seemed open to the idea, and it would beautifully cement her 'cultural conversion' to Ressaline. The actual romantic interest of the main character turned out almost as shallow as the other side characters.. I think she operated a nightclub? It's obvious the main character loved her, but I couldn't even tell you what she looked like.As a final note, the idea was super interesting and if you can stand chapter after chapter of comically kinky sex, I would gladly recommend this book. I read all night and finished it in a single setting, I couldn't let it go.

I was not happy as this story concluded. I think because the world and people ticked me off. This wasn’t because it is a bad story/read. It’s not. It kept you interested and engaged in the characters. It was because there eventually seemed to be no good. Even those who were good were either abused or went along or were in the end only chemically happy. The main character in the end was corrupted or maybe cowered to think what was done to them was something she could do to others herself. It’s a complicated story. Some of the sex coupling does go beyond what many are comfortable with. The author says don’t read this book but who really wouldn’t when presented with that statement.

This is a terrible book. the only thing the nation of women can do with a power over a strange plant substance is too use it to have enormous power & multi orgasmic sex sessions that determine your place in society. we hear that they suffered through starvation but haven't tried to use this stuff for anything else. They stage control contests with the outcome dependibg on how you deal with orgasms. This author hasa running history with power and control in their work. No one in a relationship is ever equal but this book took it too far at least for me

Potential spoilers ahead.. it's just as well written as everything else from this author and I've highly enjoyed all the other things that I've read. This one has some very dicey moral issues. It's not .. bad. But it's not good either. It asks the question if you are stuck between a rock and a hard place which do you pick. Which do you embrace and cultivate. Most stories root for the underdog this one has the underdog win but only by becoming the 'bad' guy. And it also asks is the bad guy really the worst option.

Similar themes to many of Robin's books, only more so. The back story is a little weak but since it's only there to provide a plausible reason for the story, it's not really a problem.

This book was an interesting read but I can't imagine a society like it working all that well but I guess if folks are drugged to be happy or magiced that way no one will revolt.
