There are surprising inaccuracies throughout this book. It looks like the author omitted the optional parameters when documenting built-in string functions on pages 86 and 88. How did that get past the editor? CHARINDEX accepts 3 parameters NOT 2, as stated on page 86 and QUOTENAME accepts 2 parameters, not 1. The list of string functions is incomplete because at least one of them (FORMAT) is missing.Also, cursors are not discussed anywhere. You won't even find it in the index. They should at least say why cursors have fallen out of favor. What happens when you're trying to work on legacy stored procedures that use cursors?A better option is to download the free Books Online from Microsoft

Great book! I gave this book to my granddaughter who is 4 1/2 years old. Her mother was looking for a nice story and introducing her daughter to more ethnic diversity. Her mother was thrilled!

Grace was a girl who dreamed big dreams. She loved stories and acted out the parts from stories she knew - Joan of Arc, a soldier hidden in a wooden horse at the gates of Troy, a pirate, an explorer, a doctor. When her class at school was going to perform "Peter Pan," Grace knew she wanted to play Peter! Lots of other children wanted to play Peter too, so the teacher held auditions to see who would earn the part. Two of her classmates said she could not play that role, because Peter Pan was not a girl, nor was he black. But her mother and her grandmother encouraged her to keep on dreaming. "You can be anyone you want," Grandma said, "if you put your mind to it." Grace worked hard learning her lines. When the audition was over, she was named Peter Pan, because she did the best acting of all the class.What child, what adult really, has not been told, "You can't do that!" and given a long list of reasons why she can't. We all can do much more than even we can dream, so don't let anyone tell you, "You can't."

Fantastic book. Though, I hadn't been aware that dealing with skin color or gender and overcoming stereotypes was the focus of this book and it was a surprise for my 5 year old to read that kids were telling Grace that she couldn't play the part she wanted in the play because she was Black or because she was a girl. She kept asking me "what does it mean that she can't do something because of her brown skin?" I just told her those kids were being ridiculous telling Grace she could not do something good that she wanted to do and that, thankfully, the kids at her school are smarter than the kids in the book. And I'm glad for that!

This is one of my favorite stories to read my daughter! Love the "believe in yourself" and "equality" messages for young girls and BEAUTIFUL illustrations. However buy NEW, I bought used and the condition was poor despite being advertised as excellent.

Great book to teach you child to love there skin there gender and to love themselves.

This is an amazing book for any child to read. I think sometimes only certain people buy books with black characters or girl characters, but this is about the possibilities in all of us and saying NO to people's preconceptions of who you are. Any child or adult will enjoy this wonderful story. It should be in every school and personal library. The characters are accessible and the illustrations are wonderful.

The book does talk somewhat about the theory of Management Science and decision modeling, but relies much too heavily on a $1000 Excel add-on to do the work. Much of the basic things can be done in Excel's built in Solver add-on, but the more sophisticated optimization, distribution and sensitivity analysis requires the more expensive add-on. If you are looking for a good textbook on theory, I would recommend looking somewhere else.

As a positive, this did provide a good level beyond "back of the envelope" calculations for Excel, which is commonly available, so that was somewhat useful. However, for general conceptual modeling (ie, visualizing it), it spoke more of modeling as being a fluid art (which I agree with) but didn't offer much in the way beyond a few quips of what experienced modelers do. I think this makes it predominantly task-oriented, which can be taken either as positive or negative depending on your needs. In any case, I think this should be seen as a supplementing skill rather than a standalone source.Very little background should be necessary beyond the ability to understand basic equations. Excel does the math for you.

This textbook was required for a Information Systems class in Decision Modeling and both the students and the professor found it difficult to read. The problem lies in the author's habit of over-explaining simple concepts and deluging the reader with "fluff" information. This is especially true, when it comes to the work problems which usually lead off with information that doesn't relate to the important material needed to perform the calculations.This is one of the few times, where too much information is a bad thing. The first two chapters of the book are probably the best as they explain how decision modeling is an "art form" and something that is more conceptually-based and uses Excel as a way to express itself. Unfortunately, the author quickly forgets this after Chapter 3 and dives headfirst into complex work problems, as if the reader has advanced knowledge of these concepts and a mastery of Excel.The book seems to be designed for those who have more than a general knowledge of Excel and decision modeling. But as a teaching reference it is a poor choice for students.

I purchased this book for the Solver discussion. Solver is the optimization tool that many Excel users don't understand or use. I really came to appreciate Solver in school, but lost track of the textbook. I purchased this as a substitution and was not disappointed. Although I used a different textbook in school, I found this one to be straightforward. The user should have no trouble understanding and formulating their own models regardless of whether they are using it as a reference or as a textbook.

I got this text book for an MBA class in data modeling. It is a useful reference and covers the most useful types of modeling that Excel can perform. However, most sections are overly wordy and don't stick to the concept of bottom line up front. You sometimes have to skim multiple pages before getting to the meat of the section and learning about the actual function. This book would benefit greatly from a summary box in each chapter that only covers the relevant Excel functions and formulas.

As the author of Step-By-Step Optimization With Excel Solver and a college statistics instructor, I can definitely say that If you do any kind of deep optimization modeling with Excel, here's your book. Stephen Powell and Kenneth Baker have put together, by far, the most in-depth book on how to use Excel to scientifically analyze uncertainty in complicated business decisions. They not only present the theory but also provide clear, step-by-step instructions loaded with with screenshots of Excel in use. The book does a GREAT job at presenting very complicated material in a way that a reasonably proficient Excel user can comprehend without getting a headache. Some of the topics they cover are Monte Carlo simulation, Robust Optimization, Nonlinear Optimization using Excel's built-in Solver, Networking Models, Linear and Integer Programming in Excel, and combining Optimization with Simulation. No matter how much of a whiz-bang, quant jock in Excel you are, this book will take you to a new level of expertise in using the Excel Solver to model uncertainty in order to make better business decisions. I love stuff like this and thought it was fantastic. Those who want to be expert in optimization and risk analysis will really enjoy this book!

This seems rather strange to me. Either way, this will make the cost of the book go down and I will loose profit when trying to resell it after the class has ended. If there is a need for silly, pointless, entertaining children's books, Dawn McMillan and Ross Kinnaird have found that niche. Their new book, I Need a New Butt definitely fits the bill. Their hero has discovered his butt crack, decides that it must have happened when he farted, and speculates over getting a replacement. ("Of course! The fart! That's what blew my butt apart! Split the thing clean in two. Now I wonder what to do.)He weighs the virtues of different types of butts he might get (wood, armor-plated, chrome, rocket-powered, different colors) but resigns himself to his fate. He's stuck with the butt he has, and is somewhat comforted and disturbed to discover that his dad's butt has a crack as well.I Need a New Butt reminded me of I Wish That I Had Duck Feet by Dr. Seuss. I could speculate that McMillan and Kinnaird have a lesson here about kids discovering how their bodies work, etc. But mostly it's just a silly book. This is one for dads to read to their boys. Little boys will enjoy the silly humor, but mothers who forbid their children to use the "F-word" (fart) will not appreciate it.Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the complimentary electronic review copy!

The ending was lacking. I felt like it was great and then it abruptly ended in an awkward manner. We were bummed.

creepy book...pics show full butts not just cracks here and there...one pic shows a man painting on a boy's butt, another has the boy walking as a naked Model on the red carpet with adults watching, another has the boy going into a dark adult nightclub with a bumper on his butt...I will not be reading this to my child anytime soon..too much effort to return. Creepy stuff!

I didn't have high expectations for this book and simply purchased it to see what it wasn't like. When I received it, I was incredibly amused, as were all three of my children, ages 2, 7 and 9. If you're not a prude, buy this book. You're in for a ton of giggles coming from your loved ones if you do.

Our grandkids ages 4 & 6 have terrific senses of humor. They love Amelia Bedelia for instance. Since the 4 yr old especially finds butts etc hilarious I thought they'd love this. Neither of them thought this was funny. The 4 yr old announced after page 1 that "this doesn't make sense, everyone knows there's a crack there!" There was a smile about the idea of using a bumper only after I explained the word "bum." They both thought pages were missing at the end. I did too. Neither has been interested in reading it again and I don't think I can donate it because I'm sure some will find it offensive.

It's no Wonkey Donkey, for sure. I bought this because it was recommended since I bought Wonky Donkey. It's not very funny and the ending is so abrupt it leaves you wondering if a page is missing. I'm no prude, I like a good fart joke as much as the next guy, but this book just wasn't good. I don't recommend.

I have been buying this for every child that I know.This is a hilarious book for kids and parents.If you love to laugh with your kiddos, this is the book for you.

Say what you will about the subject matter, this book made my 7-year son old actually cry for laughing at his bday party. It's been a serious fave among all our kids up to age 14, definitely a most-requested read. It's not tacky at all and puts a positive spin on a type of humor that we usually try to discourage among our 5 boys. Would be nice to have it in a hard-cover the the amount of use it gets...

Seriously funny without being too potty-humorish. My 4 yr loves this book and my husband and I have been known to crack up a few times every time we read this.
