2nd edition purchased. Our first edition was destroyed due to water in the basement so had to throw it out. Got this as a replacement and liked the extra material.

I almost didn't read this book because of the name, as my assumption was that it was a beginner level JS book. I'm so glad that I decided to read it. This book is most definitely NOT a beginner book. However, it is written in easy to understand language. It covers all the major topics a good JS developer should understand. Closures, the context of 'this' depending on how a function is invoked, the use of apply(), call(), and bind() to set context, arrow functions and how they affect context, using apply() to supply a variable list of arguments, maps, memoizing functions, object orientation with prototypes, regular expressions, timers and threads, generators and promises, writing modular code, and much more.I actually own the first edition of this book, and decided to get this edition as well. There is of course some duplication between the two versions. but there is also a huge amount of new material in this edition. It is well worth getting the 2nd edition even if you already own the 1st edition.The book series You Don't Know JS: Scope & Closures,You Don't Know JS: this & Object Prototypes, and the other 4 volumes are also excellent intermediate level books (one of them is a beginner book), but they are a little more technical and not quite as easy to understand as this book. I don't believe there are any advanced level books. You get to the intermediate level, and then you program for about 10,000 hours to get to the advanced/expert level. On the other hand, Eloquent JavaScript, 2nd Ed.: A Modern Introduction to Programming is a pretty good book that will take you from beginner up to the intermediate level. Lastly, JavaScript: The Definitive Guide: Activate Your Web Pages (Definitive Guides) has long been the JS bible for years, but it is now getting a little dated. When a new version ever gets released, I'd buy it immediately. JavaScript: The Good Parts also gets a lot of recommendations, but it too is getting a little dated.

A tried a few JavaScript learning sources before this one, and they would show me good ways toward particular ends, but left me wondering why the details were chosen the way they were, and what other possibilities existed. I felt too bogged down by lingering questions to feel confident. After reading this book, I feel as if I actually know the language JavaScript, not merely a way to use the language.This book is probably not a good first introduction to the language, but it is an excellent way to complete your knowledge. If you want to start from scratch, I would recommend doing any language tutorial online, getting comfortable with that material, and then picking up this book. The book takes a browser-based approach, but the examples written so that they are easy to follow for other environments like the Node console, which is what I am using since I am more interested in Node.js.

Great book, and one of those that says that it assumes you're comfortable in javascript and doesn't spend half of it explaining the basics all over again. At this point I'd get the new (2nd) edition, but when I have someone working with me new to JS, I prefer that they use this one first as there's an awful lot of code out there that this one will help explain and then they move onto the new stuff. But if you're spending your money in 2017, go with the new one.

As a back-end (Java) focused developer who has to help lead teams with front-end developers, I found this book very helpful in understanding the code I'm reviewing and knowing when the code can be optimized. I've found myself working on more JavaScript side projects as well. I've found I'm enjoying JavaScript more and not despising it as much. :)

The book does an excellent job of explaining the more unique parts of Javascript, without getting bogged down into technical lingo.The biggest issue I have with the book is that, there are way too many errors that can throw off people who are not coming from a programming background.For example, Chapter 9 exercise number 3:What are the contents of the array,const samurai = [];samurai.push("Oda");samurai.unshift("Tomoe");samurai.splice(1,0, "Hattori, "Takeda");samurai.pop();The answer is naturally just ["Hattori, "Takeda"], however when looking at the answer at the back, it still includes "Tomoe" and completely disregards the last .pop().Most of these errors are small mistakes, however I can see how it can throw off people who are just beginners trying to get a firm grasp on programming in general.Aside from that, this is a great book and has some really cool examples of how to solve issues that you normally would not find in traditional languages like C++, Java etc.

For those who, like me, couldn't figure out what version of JS this book documents, now that I have it, it's ES6. I would also like to add that once you receive the book, there is a means for you to download an electronic copy for free. (PDF, mobi, epub)

This is really an excellent book, I learned alot from it and refer to it often. My only minor complaint is that I wish the examples were more about simplified real-world problems a developer might encounter, rather than the ninja stuff. But it's a very minor complaint.

Half way through the book and I'm learning so much. The style of the author is very entertaining. Book works for me since it talks about advanced javascript techniques.

I received this as a birthday gift from my daughter. It was an enjoyable read, organized into short chapters, each one covering an aspect of everyday life while showing how mathematics can be applied. At the end of each chapter is a little exercise for the reader to apply their skills related to the chapter subject. I solved some of those correctly and others not but, no worries, I wasn't graded! I think a high school math teacher could build some entertaining lesson plans from this book.

So delighted to get this book. Excited for the changes in my education because of it too. Thank you Bobby!

I stumbled across a Cathy Glass book that was listed with several other books by various authors. That was the beginning for me of wanting to read more -- so far I've read three and have purchased three more to come next .I am terribly impressed with the way Cathy is able to gain trust of these poor abused children and then slowly (at the child's own speed) make them feel safe, understood, and especially cared for. She works so patiently and helps them slowly open like a beautiful flower while giving them self confidence and helping them to realize that none of it was their fault that they were so badly treated. What an awesome gift to give to an abused child.To those readers that hesitate about reading this type of book because they can't deal with hearing of the things done to these children (I am one of those people), rest assured that it is not written that way. Stories are written around the event of being visited by Social Services and what transpires until they are able to move on from there to find their "forever family". I highly recommend her books but don't be surprised if you get "hooked" on them.

I just finished "Will you love me" last night and WOW! When you told her she got to stay I had tears dripping off my chin. ALL she ever wanted was a family and home she could call her own. I was so worried about the lack of food she was eating and was worried about organ shut down because of it, that did scare me a bit in the book. Lucy you are the luckiest lady in the whole world. You have the best Mom that one could ever ask for. I truly am sorry the system failed you so badly and took so long to get you to your for-ever Mom/Mum! Cathy I praise you from the bottom of my heart, coming from being adopted at 12 yrs old when my birth Mom/Mum was killed in a car crash. My Mom's best friend at the time adopted me but she was only 12 yrs older then me at 24 yrs old. I lost my dear Mom/Mum in 2008 and it still breaks my heart that I lost my 2nd Mom/Mum to early. I first found your book "damaged" this year when I got a kindle, and I have gone and read I think all the rest of your books. I have them on my kindle but I might have to order the whole collection for my book collection, so that I can share them with some of my friends who read. They of course have not heard of your books as I have never seen them in any stores, and I am always scanning ALL the books, so I would not have missed these! I do hope this is not the last story you have, (not meaning I want more kids to be hurt and go into care!) but I know that there are so many kids out there going through this. The wonderful story of how Lucy became your legal daughter was by far the most touching of all. I had just finished the book about Alice when I stated Lucy's book, so at the end of Lucy's book when you get Alice I figure I was already ahead! THANK YOU so MUCH, not just for your wonderful books, but most important to for being a foster Mom and a carer who really DOES care! Bless you and all the children who come through your home. I hope to see more updates of each of the kids on your website, and I look often to see if there are any updates, hoping in anticipation! I will have to say your editors have to be in tears the whole time they work on your books, bless them for helping you put out some awesome books! Sad but true!

Lucy's life started out very sad, the time she spent with her mother, all of the moving she had to do, social workers coming in and out of her life but not really helping. Finally, at the age of eleven, Lucy met Cathy Glass, and life started to get better. Lucy finally had stability in her life, and she finally had someone who truly cared for her. Cathy warns that Lucy's story is heartbreaking, and it is, but it is also inspiring. Cathy has touched so many lives, and helped so many children, but this story gives me hope that one day there won't be so many kids left thinking that life is hopeless. The world could use more people like Cathy Glass. I am touched each time I read one of her books. Captivating from beginning to end, "Will You Love Me?" is one of the best books I have ever read. I am very happy that Lucy found Cathy and her children. I am looking forward to reading more from Cathy Glass as soon as I can.

I appreciate what a mentor once termed "small volume" books. To earn five stars from me, the book must be concise and well written, and be a resource I will refer to again and again. Purple Squirrel is just that. Once delivered to my Kindle, I read the "small volume" twice in one evening. Author Michael B Junge writes with energy that motivates, and provides extremely applicable information designed to help you repackage yourself in a purple furry suit with a bushy tail. Many of us today would describe our skills and employment experience as "Welll....." An author who presents a resource that is "concise" and "well written" can help you present yourself as just what the prospective employer is looking for.

I am retired and love being retired. I do not want to go back to work. So why would I choose to read a book such as this one? Well, I like psychology and want to know what makes people tick. The author did an excellent job of telling his readers step by step how to write a resume, network to learn about job openings and to get recommendations, how to do your best in an interview, how to give notice at your old job, and how to transition to the new job. There were a few errors overlooked by the editor, but the content of the book was so good that I could not reduce my rating because of a few minor errors.

Very few get this detailed. However, it needs an update. Markets change and people have to change with them. I guess that's why people still call Executive Recruiters. We are needed as not everyone has the time to spend 20 years experiencing something that someone needs now. Great book - just need update !

It's ok but not too much ground breaking information here. Self help books are typically the same but this one wasn't a struggle to get through like most are.

You know when you come across an idea that you've intuitively known, but never quite articulated? There's that "A ha!" moment you have when the idea clicks. While reading Purple Squirrel I experienced a number of those. Some new ground was broken for me, but for the most part the experience of reading this book was more one of turning nebulous concepts that I already had absorbed into concrete, actionable forms.Purple Squirrel was an easy read, and it was absolutely worth my time. If you're looking for a job, trying to figure out what you want to do with your life, or are just trying to gather more information about how the job market works, Purple Squirrel will be a good read for you.

Tons of books on the market tout a "secret" that you don't know about job search, but you often find it's the same old stuff you've heard a million times. I was pleasantly surprised with Purple Squirrel. This book had a great balance of the basics with a good bit of detailed and helpful information...and it wasn't just about how to re-format your resume! It was a comprehensive look at how to approach the whole process. Kudos to Michael B. Junge.

It is good for someone in middle management in the business world, but not so much for in the scientific world or for just graduating with no experience. It relies heavily on one being able to show value to future employers by presenting projects that were completed in previous job situations and that you know the $ value of the impact on the company that you left.

Different approach to job seeking process. Instead of applying to hundred job offers, you represent yourself on the Web from professional point of view, and that makes employers contact you. After short time from starting reading this book and updating my LinkedIn profile I've got contacted by HR manager from some well-known company. And I even didn't look for a job.This book has a good set of advises. And it will take you little time to both read this book and improve job seeking process simultaneously. Of course, you'd need to posses needed skills and experience to find desired job, but this book will give you a possibility to look at the process differently, and with this improve it.
