I have had this book in the past but it seems to be one that is borrowed and never returned.

Excellent quality and super informative book. Great buy!

Unfortunately, I cannotnt recommend Charles L. Blockson, BlackGenealogy because so much of what he writes is either misleading orunhelpful. Blockson's treatment of Black genealogical records for thepost-slavery era (after 1865) is somewhat adequate but pedestrian.There are several other commonly-available books that address theserecords much better. It is in his treatment of records from theslavery period that Blockson does his readers the greatest disservice.His experience with records of slavery seems to be limited to recordsof Pennsylvania - which might account for his woefully inadequatetreatment of Southern legal records where most genealogists in searchof slave ancestors may need to look. Some of the most significant ofsuch records are probate records, deeds, conveyances, and lawsuits- but the reader would never know it from reading this book.Blockson devotes a total of only THREE SENTENCES to "wills,estate inventories, and tax records" (p.71). According to thesingle sentence devoted to tax records, their value is merely to"prove that slaves were valuable assets to ironmasters in thelatter part of the eighteenth century." In his discussion ofFederal Census records (p.45), he says, "Slave schedules weremade for every state. . . with slaves listed under their owners'names." He fails to explain that slaves are not named in thesecensuses, but only listed by age and gender. There is no discussionof the uses and shortfalls of the slave censuses. Rather than discussthese most fruitful and likely sources, Blockson urges readers to seekrecords of slave "breeding sessions" (p.72), to browsemuseum collections for "slave collars" with names on them(p.75), to search for "branding records" in countycourthouses and branding irons in museum collections (p.75)! Thesebizarre recommendations are urged in spite of the fact that the authordoes not offer a single example of such things (he admits that it is"difficult to find any [courthouse branding] recordstoday"!). Furthermore, if museums have relics such as brandingirons, the author fails to show how finding them would help aresearcher trace his or her ancestors. On p.77, Blockson addressesthe relative difficulty of finding records of slave paternity comparedto slave maternity, but adds, "You may run into problems tracingyour DIRECT family line (father to father)." One has to wonderwhy Blockson believes that tracing maternal ancestry is less"direct" (and by implication, less satisfactory) thantracing paternal ancestry. Blockson's book is punctuated withlengthy, angry polemics against slavery and racism, which willprobably be unhelpful to most genealogical searches. The mainobjective of Blockson's book seems to be to arouse his readers'indignation at racism and the "inhuman system of slavery,"rather than to lead researchers to records of their ancestors.

Review The Federalist Papers are a series of 85 articles advocating the ratification of the United States Constitution. Seventy-seven of the essays were published serially in The Independent Journal and The New York Packet between October 1787 and August 1788. A compilation of these and eight others, called The Federalist; or, The New Constitution, was published in two volumes in 1788 by J. and A. McLean. The series' correct title is The Federalist; the title The Federalist Papers did not emerge until the twentieth century. The Federalist remains a primary source for interpretation of the U.S. Constitution. According to historian Richard B. Morris, they are an "incomparable exposition of the Constitution, a classic in political science unsurpassed in both breadth and depth by the product of any later American writer." At the time of publication, the authorship of the articles was a closely-guarded secret, though astute observers guessed that Hamilton, Madison, and Jay were the likely authors. Following Hamilton's death in 1804, a list that he drew up became public; it claimed fully two-thirds of the essays for Hamilton, including some that seemed more likely the work of Madison (Nos. 49-58, 62, and 63). The scholarly detective work of Douglass Adair in 1944 postulated the following assignments of authorship, confirmed in 1964 by a computer analysis of the text: - Alexander Hamilton (51 articles: nos. 1, 6-9, 11-13, 15-17, 21-36, 59-61, and 65-85) - James Madison (29 articles: nos. 10, 14, 37-58 and 62-63) - John Jay (5 articles: 2-5 and 64). - Nos. 18-20 were the result of a collaboration between Madison and Hamilton.

The Federalist papers were written as a part of the campaign to get the Constitution ratified in the American states. In New York, the final decision was in doubt, and Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay wrote a series of essays, published in the media of the time, to convince New York to ratify the Constitution. Jay became ill, and did not participate in this project as much as Hamilton (a New Yorker) or Madison (a Virginian). In the process, their propaganda also illuminated important themes emanating from the document being debated. As a result the Federalist papers are a rich source of understanding the logic and premises of the Constitution (but keep in mind the political purpose behind these documents).This is a fine version, with Rossiter being one of the deans of these documents. But it is the essays themselves that are most important. Let's take a look at a few issues emerging from these documents, to see what is at stake. . . .One juxtaposition is between Federalist # 9 and # 10. # 9 was written by Hamilton, and addresses how to deal with factions and discontent: He wanted a stronger central government that could suppress such threats to stability. # 10, on the other hand, is a much more subtle effort by Madison to address the same issue (no wonder the two of them became political enemies shortly thereafter). He felt that a republic over a large area would keep factions from becoming too dominant. He was more trusting of processes than was Hamilton. If you want to understand the brilliance of Madison, read Federalist # 10; it is a seminal document.# 47 and # 48 provide the rationale for two hallmarks of the American system: separation of powers (by which Congress, the courts, and the President have different sources of power) and checks and balances (the ability of each of the three branches to "check" the other, e.g., Presidential veto over Congressional laws or Congress being able to override said veto). #51 is even more explicit, with a near poetic turn by Madison. "Ambition must be made to counteract ambition. . . .If men were angels, no government would be necessary. . . ." In short, political figures may try to use the political system for their own advantage. By creating a government where such ambitions can be thwarted by others, you prevent evil effects of such ambition. Thus, checks and balances and separation of powers can deter misuse of power.And there is so much more in this volume. Hamilton, in #69 and # 70 indicates why a vigorous executive (President) is a plus for the proposed government. Just so, Hamilton in # 78 speaks of the role of the Supreme Court and the whole court system.The Federalist Papers are key documents regarding the Constitution. One must recognize their political purposes; one must understand that there are internal inconsistencies (compare, again, # 9 and # 10); one must take into account the extreme time pressures on the authors as New York's ratifying convention's meeting loomed. Nonetheless, this is an important document and provides genuine insights into the minds of the Founders.

I guess I’m a little confused. There are supposed to be 85 essays in the Federalist but this book only has 18. I don’t see a description of the book that warns of this. Am I missing something? The introduction talks about all 85 essays as if they are all in this publication. Nothing in the product discription warns that this publication only contains an abreviated list of the essays.

It should be noted this does not include ALL of the Federalist Papers. It is a selected few, which I didn't notice when I bought it. I wanted them all sor study purposes, so I got another paperback with all 86 papers for 1/2 the price at a bookstore.

In the description it says, "This book features edited highlights of the essays". This isn't the case for the hard copy edition. It doesn't even have half of the papers in this edition. Returned

Most books with the Federalist Papers that I could find only had a selection of them included. This book contains all 85 and also lists who wrote them and when they were published (if that information is available). It also has a fairly decent Table of Contents so you can easily find the paper you're looking for. The constitution is also included at the beginning which some people might find handy. Overall exactly what I was looking for. Would buy again.

It contains all of the papers that I didn't receive from the The Complete Federalist and anti Federalist book I purchased before. Now I can read all of them!

Save you money, ( I wish I saved mine ).The book has a nice cover and some slick images, however, it's content is sub-par for a coffee table book. If your interested in gardening, then pass..... if you want to give somebody a house gift, maybe.... but not if they are interested in gardening. I read this last night, and after about 100 pages, lost interest, as it's less then fluff.

I'm loving this book! It's a beautiful blend of how-to and garden/exterior eye candy. I've already flagged several design ideas, plant materials, furniture picks and projects (#8: ornamental cabbage kokedama!). The photos are artfully composed. So many ideas to steal! Highly recommended as both an idea/reference bible and coffee table book. A relaxing read amid the bustle of the holidays!

This is a great landscaping book with the exception it has no water features. Photography is inspiring.

I bought this for a gardener and I am sorry. The photos are pleasant but not great and the ideas are"trendy" perhaps but in the end many are poorly thought out- like the washer drier in a tiny outdoor shed which on first glance seems brilliant until you think about the damp climate of the setting and the potential for rust. A "girdle" for gravel which is level with the ground is unlikely to be effective in preventing the gravel from being kicked into the grass though that is how it is presented -etc.

Purely a book showcasing gardens of the elite- suppose I’m not that fancy. I would have preferred to see actual plant information in addition to the vignettes

The photos, text, and advice are incredible. This is a one-of-a-kind gardening book that will provide inspiration no matter your gardening zone. So glad I have time to pour over it this winter so that I can incorporate some of the ideas this spring.

I needed some inspiration to get through the New England winter and start my annual garden planning. The Kindle version is a lot more satisfying and inexpensive than buying the 20 gardening magazines.

Although I am only at segment 5 or so at this time, I am totally in love the photos, descriptions and choice of gardens. All dream like for the average gardener, but then again I find small ideas I can use in my small patio type garden. Fantastic the whole book.

Michael de Bettencourt is a Health, Safety, and Environment Program Director for a defense services contractor and is a retired US Coast Guard officer.  He has provided emergency management program assessment services and conducts ICS training for industry and public sector clients.  He has worked as a responder and response manager for oil spills, chemical releases, floods, and large-scale law enforcement operations.    Tim Deal is the Federal Preparedness Coordinator for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in Region VIII. Prior to coming to FEMA he worked as vice President in the emergency management training field. He has extensive emergency response experience serving in several ICS positions, including Planning Section Chief and Operations Section Chief.     Vickie Deal works for the federal government and has a variety of operational experience in emergency response management operations.  She has been an Operations Section Chief and Deputy Incident Commander.  Vickie also served as a response program manager for the Coast Guard in Washington DC and developed the ICS program implementation guidelines for the Coast Guard.    Gary Merrick is an Associate with Booz Allen Hamilton and is a retired US Coast Guard officer.

Everything you need to learn, understand and utilize the Incident Command System. It is well written and clear with useful examples and information. It will have value as a reference long after the class it was purchased for. I recommend this book for anyone needing to use ICS.

This is an outstanding reference for an EOC, command post, or office. It doesn't do the work for you, but it certainly helps.

This book, from the former US Coast Guard Incident Command training contractor provides some good details for those needing to dig in a little deeper than is covered by I-100, 200, 300. The problem is that several changes have been instituted since its publication that date the reference and make it inaccurate. It also has a strong Federal perspective -- one from the National Contingency Plan, and not that of everyone else. It does not use the same planning process that all States and locals use, so it needs to be translated into a usable format. Overall, for what it covers it is okay, it just needs to be used with significant caution.

Beyond Initial Response is an outstanding textbook on the Incident Command System. It explains ICS concepts, processes, and positions in a very clear, concise, and practical manner that is easy to understand and apply. Despite on-going tweaks to ICS concepts since the introduction of NIMS, the content of this book is still widely applicable to ICS practitioners at all levels of government and private industry. All of the content in this book, authored by nationally qualified ICS practitioners and grounded in tried-and-true concepts, is consistent with the current NIMS ICS training curriculum including the planning process, unified command concepts, and position descriptions. The book was updated in 2010 to include information on Area Command and the Multiagency Agency Coordination System and added more fidelity to the chapters on various ICS positions.Since 2007 we have issued this book to every student enrolled in one of our ICS classes, including ICS 300, ICS 400, and all position specific courses. Most of the students have made it a staple in their response kits. During training, exercises, and responses, the concepts in the book have help build a common framework for our interactions with other response entities, including local, state, and federal agencies as well as the private sector and have helped facilitate our interagency cooperation. This book is a must have for any responder involved in incident management. There is not another text on the market that explains the Incident Command System as well as this book.

I am a Type I Incident Commander with over 25 years of response experience. For novices this book is an awesome introduction to the Incident Command System. For experts, its always great to have a book handy to check to make sure you are following the process and if necessary be able to explain the process to a new person integrating into ICS. As a part time instructor, this book is excellent at augmenting and clarifying training lessons. If your old or new to ICS, this is a necessary collection to your list of references in your response library. I have copied many of the checklists in the book and placed them into my field guide. With this book, you can't go wrong, especially during a response where you can't afford to. Great all around!

Fantastic story! It was informative and riveting up until the very end! I got too excited halfway through and lent it to my mother to read, and then had to wait two days for her to finish it and give it back to me so I could finish the last couple of chapters. It's currently sitting on my brother's nightstand! I learned so much about diamond formation and prospecting, exploration, and what it's like to do something like that for a living, and I mean a real sense of having that passion and dedicating your life to it. The history was extremely well written into the story and provided a lot of insight; the chapter detailing the battle of Bloody Falls still haunts me. I would recommend this book to absolutely everyone. Whether they have an interest in mineralogy or not, they will by the end of this book!

When I started reading this book I was immediately impressed by the author's long involvement in reporting on Canadian diamonds and the fact that he interviewed and was in repeated contact with nearly every important person in this story. This gave him an overview and perspective that none of the people involved could possess. Just as important, the author understood and could communicate the fine details of minerals, exploration, rock units, glaciation and the other geological elements clearly and accurately. The book was easy-to-read, interesting and hard to put down. One of the best-told geological stories. If you are only going to read one book about Canadian diamonds or diamond exploration, this is the one.

Interesting true story of a persistent geologist whose somewhat harrowing adventures eventually pay off handsomely. Krajick, who was not involved, provides much detail about disagreements within the characters' personal relationships, reads like a grouchy geologist's diary. Would have given it 5 stars had it been 50 pages shorter without all the grumbling.

Although I was quite familiar with the exploration in the Canadian mountains for diamonds, I didn't know the nitty gritty of the two men who were responsible. Barren Lands in one of the most exciting, adventure stories of factual material I could have imagined. The author, a science writer, seems to have done his research and documenting of it in a full on bibliography, quite well. It was a situation where I already knew the ending, but not the beginning or the middle. Now I know "the rest of the story," the famous saying of radio personality, Paul Harvey.

Recommended by a geologist friend. I recommended it to my wife who has a love/hate relationship with diamonds, and to my fiends who have read Isaacson's book Steve Jobs as part of understanding the spectrum of Autism and Asperger's in making progress.in society. The power of singular purpose and intense focus is wonderful - provided it is aimed or I should better say provided it happens to be aimed in the right direction. I thank the gods that neither Steve Jobs nor Chuck Fipke was born in a place or time where they could lead a nation.

This is a well-written, interesting book that teaches a lot about the history of the Canadian Arctic and the search for diamonds around the globe. I particularly liked the history of Canada's "Barren Lands" in the north from the 1500s onward. I also learned a great deal of earth science and geology. It was fun to read, and kept my attention throughout. I particulary enjoyed the maps in the front of the book and referenced them often. I also appreciated the index in the back; with so many people overlapping and involved in diamond exploration, I had to reference the index frequently to remember who was who across the global history presented. The chapter notes in the back of the book are also quite good; I wish they were footnotes on the page as many were interesting.As I will be teaching a course on this area and will be going to Yellowknife shortly, I thought the book gave a great overview of the area. It also convinced me to add a few lectures on geology.
