Perhaps it is silly to review last years edition to this wonderful line of books, but I felt it was necessary. I used to love the Guiness World Records book when I was a kid, and looked forward to getting one every Christmas. I purchased this as a sort of gag-gift for my girlfriend, but I was also somewhat excited to re-light that fire from my childhood. Unfortunately, that did not happen, as this was the sorest of sore disappointments that I've experienced recently. The book is rather underwhelming, the graphics are uninteresting, and the records are really not impressive. The only one that I remember (simply for the sheer stupidity) is "most baked beans eaten in 120 seconds with a toothpick". We had a good laugh at that, but opted not to take it with us during the move, I wouldn't want the movers to waste precious time and back strength carrying this disappointment.
My kids have enjoyed this series of books, so when I saw this latest edition available as a Kindle Daily Deal, I thought it would make a great little gift. Unfortunately, it was obviously not tested adequately by the publisher before making it available in Kindle format. My kids have 7" Kindle Fire HDs, and the book is not readable. The text is tiny and jumbled with the graphics, which clearly are not sized for proper display on 7" Kindle Fire HDs (and perhaps not on other Kindles either). If you're thinking of getting this for non-Kindle devices, think again. I have a variety of devices with the Kindle app installed, and none of those were listed as options as the target device when I made the purchase.Note that my rating does not address the content of this book, just the format. If you really want this book - and again, my kids have enjoyed the previous editions - then wait for the Kindle version to be fixed or buy a physical copy.
the book itself is fine. however the binding was broken when it arrived. the used review said '' used-good''. I expected once and a while a note or two. instead the binding was completely broken and the pages sticking out of the book. that is not what I call ''good condition''. I would call that bad condition. because I was expecting and good copy for a used book. instead I found a big peace of junk. I would make the review used BAD condition. so ''good condition'' to the review is BAD condition to everyone else in this world. I WAS NOT IMPRESSED AT ALL!!!!!
This book is really really cool and comes alive. There is an iPhone/ipad app that works in conjunction with the book. You aim the camera at the book page and you receive a moving visual of what you are looking at. My kids love it.
My 10 year old likes the book but I was really hoping it would be more like the ones I used to read on the 70's/80's where there were endless pages (ok, maybe hundreds) of records. This is more flash than content, but to someone like my son who is not familiar with how things used to be, it's ok.
My kids wanted it in order to read about what type of records there are around the world.Eventhough there is too much information, it is well-sorted throughout the book. As with any record keeping book, it has records that you don't care, but it has a lot of records that you will like them very much due to their curiosity and how it was achieved...I don't regret buying it...
My evaluation is the same. My family members, for some inexplicable reason, for years have enjoyed and sought out almanacs, record books, etc. So, naturally, at Christmas and birthday, I try to get them as gifts. By last year, I became a convert to Amazon and avoided the stifling crowds, the "Sorry, we're out of it" for late shoppers like me and the looking for a parking place. I have turned to Amazon for success.
Obviously, unlike the hardcover or paperback, one does not flit through pages aimlessly, but rather has some idea as to what you want to see, although one can randomly jump around. The amount of information available is vast, and one must be disciplined in searching for items required.The beauty is that the information is available for ever even if outdated. It is one of those keep for ever books.
