Wow.Forgive me, but I’m a little overwhelmed.I have read and studied a great deal of Alison Weir’s historical accounts and biographies regarding the English monarchy, ranging from the War of the Roses to Katherine Parr. I love how she does her best to show all sides of the story and to remain as true to the facts as absolutely possible. While in her other historical works she does wander into the realm of speculation on occasion, she allows her readers to know just when she does and provides them with multiple view points so the reader can make their own informed opinions. However, it was Weir’s absolute concern with the facts that made me unsure whether or not she would be able to write a good historical fiction novel. While I knew it would be close to the truth as any fiction book could be, I did not know how Weir’s style would translate into the realm of fiction.She definitely assured me, with this book, that there was nothing to worry about at all. I was right when I thought Weir would stick to the facts, but she wrote beautifully and elegantly, carefully incorporating actual dialogue and written letters to craft an engaging tale of the first, and true, wife of King Henry VIII. Told in third person limited, readers only see the story and facts as from Katherine’s point of view. We see her arrival to England as the Infanta and her transition from Princess of Wales to Queen of England to the discarded wife of a King enthralled with another. All the facts are there, but set forth in such a manner that makes the reader absolutely sympathetic towards Katherine’s cause. Though Anne Boleyn is present, she is not seen much more than a lurking, angry figure in the distant reaches of London. This makes me so much more eager to read the next volume in which Anne Boleyn’s story will be encapsulated.The book was quite hard to read in places; not because it was dull or that it was hard, but because there is just such raw emotion. By the end of the book I had finally cried. Katherine’s story is not a happy one, though it does have many happy moments. Her story is one of hardship and unwavering conviction. I could not help but be moved by the strength of this woman in her beliefs and the kindness that overflowed her heart. If you read this book, bring a box of tissues along with you. By the end, you’ll need it.

Since this is based on history, much of the story is predictable to those familiar with this time period and Tudor history. Alison Weir, however, does a great job fleshing out the major characters with some invented dialogue most of which is based on facts taken from actual letters written by them. This book really makes Kathrine come alive as a person with complex emotions and conflicting loyalties. It also does a good job of giving life to some more obscure but relevant characters such as Kathrine's sister, the "Mad Queen, Juanna." I felt that I understood Katherine's thinking and motivation much better having read this book. At times the book seems to drag but that is because Katherine's life was defined by lengthy delays, first in her marriage to Henry the Eighth and then as she awaited a ruling by the Pope regarding the validity of this same marriage. I can only imagine what it must have been like to actually live in this world of communication delivered by horse. It's a good read for anyone who wants a better understanding of Henry's first wife, The True Queen.

Since she's one of my favorite authors, I've read several of Weir's non-fiction books, and all but one of her fictional accounts of English queens. This was good, as a historical novel in general, but I thought it felt like someone else wrote it. The language is more modern, and I have not seen Weir do that before; it was strange. I seriously wonder if a ghost writer did this. It's an excellent mix of history and fiction, and the portrayal of Katherine of Aragon is well done.

I JUST LOVED THIS BOOK. I MUST ADMIT I HAD TO GET THE KLEENEX OUT WHEN I GOT FURTHER INTO THE BOOK. SUCH A SWEET LADY TO BE TREATED SO BAD BY HENRY 8 JUST SO HE COULD HAVE ANN BOLYN.I LEARNED ALOT FROM THIS BOOK THAT I DID NOT KNOW. I LOVE ENGLISH HISTORY. BUT HER DEATH JUST TORE ME UP, AND TO NOT BE ABLE TO SEE HER DAUGHTER, WELL I WANTED TO TAKE A SKILLET TO HENRY'S HEAD AND KNOCK SOME SENSE INTO HIM. BUT THIS IS A VERY WELL WRITTEN BOOK. I HIGHLY RECAMEND IT.

I love Allison Weir. I delved right into this book with high expectations. We meet Katherine before she even sets sail for England. The first third of this book was really slow for me. A lot of time was spent during the voyage, the marriage to Arthur and her time locked away before she finally married Henry. In true Weir style, I was emerged in what Katherine must have felt. I got bored with this part though, ready to move on. I actually stopped reading it for awhile and decided to pick it up again. I have a hard time not finishing a book I’ve started. I’m so glad I came back to it! It really picked up once she married Henry. The detail was perfect and I felt like I was there. I’m reading the second book now and the third is in my library!

I’m not sure I’m going to be able to finish this, which is really unfortunate because it started so well. I’m about halfway through and for the last several chapters, it has been many pages of really the same thing- especially during the chapters where Katherine of Aragon was waiting to marry Henry. I found myself skimming and skipping paragraphs just to keep going. Once she was married, things picked up and it got interesting again but for the last few pages it’s has been paragraph after paragraph of the same.I have liked everything I’ve ever picked up by Allison Weir but this is not her best work. I’m scared to buy the Jane Seymour installment.

The book is well-researched, but the characters have little depth, perhaps due to the fact that they are based on historical figures. I found the book to move extremely slowly, and had to trudge my way through it. I was excited for the series, yet after reading this first novel, I am hesitant to continue on due for the reasons above.

While the earlier work was a studied examination of the (in)effectiveness of development policies in the developing world, this one is more of a polemic on the idea of development as a means to eliminating poverty. Easterly's approach is more critical than constructive, but is engagingly written and presented. It is, however, only one side of the argument ("academic cat fight" is closer to the mark) over development, charity, investment, and poverty in developing nations. It really is a must-read for anyone with an interest in the field, but should be paired with similar works for a more thorough examination of the topic. Paul Collier's "Bottom Billion" and Jeffrey Sachs' "End of Poverty" present alternative views that are equally worthy of consideration.

In 2011, Eric Ries made a big splash in Silicon Valley with his book “The Lean Startup: How Today's Entrepreneurs Use Continuous Innovation to Create Radically Successful Businesses.” He defines “startup” rather loosely (“an organization dedicated to creating something new under conditions of extreme uncertainty”) and encourages organizations of all sizes to avoid creating elaborate business plans and instead work “to test their vision continuously, to adapt and adjust…” This is almost precisely the same argument made by NYU economist William Easterly in his controversial 2007 bestseller, “The White Man’s Burden: Why West’s Efforts to Aid the Rest Have Done So Much Ill and So Little Good,” which is a direct assault on traditional development economics, the very field he has dedicated his life to. For the past half century, he argues, development economics has been beholden to a “legend”, a legend he once very much believed in: That poverty traps constrain impoverished nations and these poverty traps can be overcome with a “Big Push” – massive Western foreign aid packages and tops-down plans for eradicating poverty, disease, and illiteracy, while promoting various forms of economic growth.This attempt at a big fix – massive programs of aid with lofty goals but little accountability – has been the world of classically trained development economists, who he derisively dubs “The Planners.” They think they have the answers, he says, and rhetorically they have the advantage because they promise great things, such as “the end of poverty.” Reality, however, is much different according Easterly. There are no easy answers. “The only Big Plan is to discontinue the Big Plans,” he says. “The only Big Answer is that there is no Big Answer.” The promises of the Planners, such as his professional rival Jeffrey Sachs, “shows all the pretensions of utopian social engineering,” he writes rather caustically. Yet they flourish in a world without feedback or accountability, and where big plans and big promises play well with politicians and celebrities. Nobody (especially those with no direction connection to the problems) wants to promote small but achievable objectives. They want “to do something” – and do it big. Easterly claims that the West, perhaps innocently and unintentionally, has written itself into the hero role in saving the uncivilized world. Indeed, he writes, “…the development expert…is the heir to the missionary and the colonial officer.”In contrast to the Planners, the author encourages those who want to help to “think small”: the little answers that work and that can make a material, if not revolutionary, difference on the lives of the impoverished. He calls these people, mostly locally-based activists, “The Searchers.” They possess an entrepreneurial and experimentation mindset, and naturally embrace the iterative testing model promoted by Ries in “The Lean Start Up.” They get regular feedback from the poor they serve and are held accountable for their work. They don’t promise to solve world hunger, but they often make incremental yet substantive impact where they work. “The dynamism of the poor at the bottom,” he writes, “has much more potential than plans at the top.”The book is broken into four parts, each of varying interest and value. The first part, “Why planners cannot bring prosperity” is dedicated to undermining the theory of the “Big Push,” which Easterly writes is demonstrably false. He claims that “Statistically, countries with high aid are no more likely to take off than are those with low aid – contrary to the Big Push idea.” Likewise, attempts to promote free markets from the top down, as is often the case with IMF and World Bank-led structural reforms, ambitious schemes to promote capitalist growth that Easterly admittedly once believed in wholeheartedly, are doomed to failure. The same goes for top down efforts to promote democracy, although he sees democracy as important because it can supply the two things most important for meaningful reform: feedback and accountability.In Part two, “Acting out the burden,” Easterly accentuates “The tragedy of poverty is that the poorest people in the world have no money or political power to motivate Searchers to address their desperate needs, while the rich can use their money and power through well-developed markets and accountable bureaucracies to address theirs.” He highlights the insanity of the international development industry, which he likes to repeat has pumped $2.3 trillion (yes, “trillion”) into the developing world since the end of World War II – and for what? He says. He cites Tanzania as a typical case study in development economics absurdity, as that country was forced to produce 2,400 reports and host over 1,000 donor visits in a single year. The author hammers home on his two main themes of feedback and accountability, noting what little input the poor actually have on the aid that they receive and that the Planners at the top are usually divorced from reality on the ground. Easterly writes that development aid is a classic “principle/agent” relationship, where the principle is a rich donor country and the agent is the aid agency. The actual target, the poor, are nowhere in the system of response. The principle wants to see big results, and yet is in no position to check on the work and achievements. The agents are thus cloaked in a sort of invisibility – and it’s under this invisibility, the author claims, that the Planners take over. The Planners thrive in the dark, Easterly says; the Searchers in direct light. The Planners benefit from the fact that there are so many aid agencies, all with very similar missions, all supposedly coordinating efforts, yet no single entity is ultimately accountable for achieving results. The smaller and more focused an NGO’s mandate, the better. Or, as Easterly complains, “If the aid business were not so beguiled by utopian visions, it could address a more realistic set of problems for which it had evidence of a workable solution.”If the aid agencies have failed because their mandates are too broad, what about the IMF, which has the relatively narrow mission of promoting “trade and currency stability”? Easterly argues that the IMF suffers from poor data, a misplaced one-size-fits-all approach, and is all too willing to forgive loans. What should be done? Simple, Easterly says, focus the IMF on emerging markets only and reserve the true bottom billion for aid agencies, thus removing the politically unpopular conditionality that has marked IMF interventions over the past several decades.Part 3, “The White Man’s Army,” is lengthy and the least insightful in the book. Easterly’s core message, as told through vignettes about Pakistan, the Congo, Sudan, India, and Palestine/Israel is that Western meddling with the Rest has been damaging, whether it was colonialism, de-colonialism or well-intentioned aid intervention. He further argues that US efforts to restructure societies via military force, either directly or through proxies, has all the hallmarks of utopian planner mentality, as suggested by case studies on Nicaragua, Angola and Haiti. In other words, neo-conservatives are the Right wing on “The Planner continuum”, with idealists like Sachs on the Left.In Part 4, “The Future,” Easterly argues that 60 years of Planners in control of the economic development agenda is enough. It is time to drop the utopian goals of eradicating poverty and transforming governments. “The Big Goals of the Big Plan distract everyone’s attention…” he writes. “The rich-country public has to live with making poor people’s lives better in a few concrete ways that aid agencies can actually achieve.” Even worse, he writes, “The Planners’ response to failure of previous interventions [has been] to do even more intensive and comprehensive interventions.” It is time to empower the Searchers, those who probe and experiment their way to success with modest efforts to make individuals better off, even if only marginally.As far as the aid agencies are concerned, Easterly recommends: 1) end the system of collective responsibility for multiple goals; 2) and instead encourage individual accountability for individual tasks; 3) promote aid agencies to specialize rather than having many all pursue significant goals; and 4) employ independent auditors of aid activities. The central theme developed by the author throughout this book is that aid agencies need to be constantly experimenting and searching for modest interventions that work. And they must employ more on-the-ground learning with deeply embedded staff. Thus, Easterly encourages the idea of “development vouchers” that would empower local communities to get the aid they most need from the agencies that are most effective. Theoretically, those agencies that either don’t deliver value and/or don’t deliver as promised would be put out of business. It’s a compelling idea that Easterly nevertheless stresses is no panacea.Easterly writes with a certain punch, which I’m sure ruffled more than a few feathers not only with his arguments but with his style, which can be cynical and snarky. For instance, when looking to catalog the redeeming benefits of U.S. interventions over the past several decades, he cites an “Explosion of Vietnamese restaurants in the United States” for Vietnam, “Black Hawk Down was a great book and movie” for Somalia, and “Salvadoran refugees became cheap housekeepers of desperate housewives” for El Salvador. He goes on to characterize U.S. Angolan ally Jonas Savimbi as “to democracy what Paris Hilton is to chastity.” Amusing commentary, for sure, although perhaps a bit misguided given the gravity of the subject matter.In closing, Easterly makes a compelling case to “go small” with development efforts and always seek feedback and accountability. He may not be on the Christmas card list of Bono and Angelina Jolie, but I’m afraid he is much more insightful and directionally correct than their hero, Jeffrey Sachs.

Today after spending so much money on foreign aid for so little results, I think its fair that people look at the reasons why? If this book is correct, much of it is fraud. I would like to see some of these people brought in front of the court; they have wasted billions of dollars.I though many of the arguments were carefully thought out and explained. I liked the graphs too.The writer makes some valid points about his Seekers (people who are looking locally for problems) and Planners (people far away with plans) and why the seekers are better. One of these points I could relate too as it happened to me. A road had in front of my work place a big hole, so I rang the council up to get it fixed. They started to work the next day. Now I was thinking where would people in many poor African countries call. Often they cannot as the road builder is far away.Some points I think that might add to the discussion that I think the writer would agree is much of the reasons for the problems with aid though is that the Planners are generally not free agents either. For example, a charity might be able to collect Y dollars for a fever and X dollars for fighting aids in some poor country. Now what is it supposed to do, ignore the X dollars for aids because the Y dollars are better spent. Another example might be the Australian government has a big surplus of wheat now; a Planner could come along and ask for it for a poor country. Okay I admit rice might be better but rice is not on offer here wheat is.Another point I though is that seekers in poor countries in all likelihood have a similar success rate to businesspeople in the West. Most start-up businesses fail, probably most Seekers do too.One problem I did notice of the book is about 3/4 of the way, he starts going on about what he believes are Western foreign interventions mistakes. I could disagree whether or not the US did intervene in many of these countries a brutalization would still have occurred. In many of these conflicts, the reason for invading had little to do with local but geopolitical reasons often they are not local problems but foreigner and its success/failure must be measured in these terms.

Even though this book features two characters from Juliana's Rite of a Vampire series it isn't hard to easily fall into this book as you don't need to read the previous stories to do so! Though, I have yet to finish that series myself so this new series in her Rite world definitely makes me want to go back to it soon!Anyways, The Warlock Lord is so full of action and twists that I honestly didn't know where their journey was heading! Not only that but the drama between the characters kept me on my toes! And don't even get me started on how the book ended! WTF, Juliana!! If I knew it was going to end like that I would have bought the sequel WAY before I finished this book! Which is why I knew this was going to be a five star read for me and I still think that weeks later after finishing it!There's just so much goodness within this book that I don't want to spoil anything! Just that if you love paranormal action, romantic drama, and girl power then this is definitely a book for you! And if you just love Juliana's writing and stories, then you should most definitely pick this up! What are you waiting for!

I really enjoyed this story - though I’ve not read the first series that this new series is part of, it was possible for me to follow along. (I will be reading that one soon! In truth, I think reading the other series first will make for a better reading experience with this one)I enjoyed the characters and the storyline, it will be very interesting to see what happens next. That ending, though.

I loved the blurb, but I have to say, I just didn't care for these characters, so it was hard to feel more than frustrated with their emotional, over-the-top reactions and miscommunication. I noted a few small typos and dropped words, which bothered the nerd in me, but probably would be skipped over by many readers. The Warlock Lord was difficult for me to finish, as I was never invested in the protagonists...but my connection with the characters could be subjective, so I give this one a neutral rating, as others may connect better than I did.

This is a new series by Juliana Haygert but it dose have some characters from a previous book series in Right of the Vampire. This is another really well done book and if the first book in the series is anything to judge by the rest will only get better it has hate, anger, betrayal, love and warlocks battling each other for power.Luana faces many challenges shes a young Alpha with a pack not willimg too except her reign as there leader of The Dark Vale Pack she's challenged by some of her own pack one member challenges her Charles he wants the leadership and her Luana has put up with too much to let him get the better of her if she servive Vampires she can beat him. She has to face bosy male wolves who dont think a women can leas and put up with others telling her to take a mate and if that wasn't bad enough now the Queen of all evil wolves shows up she wants back what wa taken when her mate wa killed by Luana. Islia is devious and will cheat to gain what she wants. Now Luana needs help to get her pack back.Keeran a Warlock has always assumed hes the only one of his kind until and elderly which tells him his mother lives and there are more of his kind out there. He can know longer stay with the Silverblood coven he will serch for his people. Keeran and Luna will need to help each other on there journey with few people to trust and dangerous from booth Witches and Warlocks. Special note there is a cliffhanger at the end of this book and will pick up in the next book. I was allowed to read and advance copy of this book and this is my honest review.

I have that giddy happy feeling one gets when a favorite author comes out with a really great new series. The author here is Juliana Haygert and the the series is Rite World: Rite of the Warlock of which The Warlock Lord is book 1. And it’s sooooo good. Read the publisher’s blurb. Luana and Kieran’s story is precisely the promised “kick-ass paranormal romance”. It’s also a great adventure with thrills and unexpected twists and turns. Add together a great plot and superb character building (even the characters you want to hate) and tie it all together with top-notch writing. This is the result you get. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.

I am so happy to read Keeran & Luana‘s story. That ending though left me wanting to know what happens next so badly haha! I won’t post any spoilers because it’s always best to read to find out what happens yourself. Why ruin all the wonderful surprises to such a great addition to the other stories that this new series adds to. It has everything as the other series which makes it just as awesome! I highly recommend this story and look forward to finding out what happens next in Keeran & Luana‘s story as well as in addition to all the new characters! I need to know more about the Fae! And the warlocks! Not to say that I don’t love Thea and Drake still! And their little daughter oh my god sooo cute! I can’t wait to see what will become of everyone now that there is another highly dangerous foe coming out to play!

Have you ever finished a book and said, NO WAY can I wait until book 2. Oh this is the book. It kept my interest from start to finish. It ended on a crazy cliffhanger. Oh the wait for an author to finish!Luana is a werewolf that doesn’t quite fit in her pack. With a twist of surprise attacks, she finds herself on a journey, without her pack. She catches up to a friend along her journey, and eventually the 2 become 4. An unusual travel group they help each other along the way.Keeran, the warlock, the friend, the undiscovered lover. Luana helps Keeran figure out part of his destiny and figures part of her destiny by accident in the journey!Do not delay in reading this book, you will not be sorry!

It tries to cover too many models, so it doesn't cover any of them well. It's a great reference, but I'll still be buying the book for my specific motor.

I discovered Ed on the VINwiki YouTube channel and was immediately enchanted by his phenomenal storytelling. I heard about this book and eagerly picked it up to see if it would match up with his video tales. It went well above my expectations.This book is a collection of car stories, reflections on faith, and a decade-encompassing pursuit of a wild dream told through a unique blend of comedy, straightforwardness, and raw determination. One of my favorite parts of the book is how Ed brought in so many people to tell their perspective of the story - it really reinforced how much of a team effort this was.I couldn't put it down and stayed up irresponsibly late on weeknight to finish it. You won't be disappointed!

There are only a few books that are primarily about Cannonball. Brock Yates, Alex Roy and now Ed Bolian have written down their story. This is more than the autobiography of a driven man, it is the inside details, the nitty gritty how to of underground long distance outlaw racing.

A fast read (pun intended). Ed Bolian has a knack for storytelling. Achieving his life-long goal of beating the Cannonball Run record is a story that resonates with all manner of automobile fans. And stories of selling Lamborghinis to some REALLY interesting people makes for a great light-hearted story.

I could read or watch Ed Bolian on YouTube all day long. The man simply knows how to tell a great story. And this great true story is told very well and is quite captivating. I found it hard to put down and it left me wanting more.

Ed has a great writing style and I really enjoyed the entire adventure. I felt like I was along for the ride.

Great read! I'm a gearhead so this was right up my alley, you'll love it if your into that sort of thing. Well written, keeps your attention. just wish they took more video documentation of the trip!
