It is full of wisdom which is reinforced through compelling stories, research, and practical guidance for personal application.Before reading this book I didn't consider hospitality to be something I needed to work to improve in my life, mainly because I simply didn't think often of hospitality. However as I read it, I found it challenging my assumptions and revealing my inward motivations. I would highly recommend for those who truly want to grow in their role in the Christian family.

This book gives thought provoking and inspirational content to encourage believers to be actively involved with God and his work to reconcile people to himself by using your home. I would recommend this book to any Christian who desires to involved in sharing the gospel with others, but who isn't sure how to go about it. The authors give many concrete and do-able suggestions for turning your home into a strategic tool for advancing God's kingdom

Have you ever been terrified by the thought of doing evangelism? I have! Well, this is the book for you! Rather than being prepared to step onto a street corner and preach, all we have to do is invite someone over to our house! Who knew? Seriously, this book is incredible. The authors have a very comfortable, conversational style that draws you in. Just the simple idea of opening your home to friends, neighbors, acquaintances, and strangers can draw people to Christ as they see you living out the gospel every day. I was especially glad that my house doesn't have to be spotless and I don't have to prepare gourmet meals! Just a cup of coffee and some cookies, or an outdoor BBQ, or a simple pot of spaghetti will do. The book also includes a 6-week study outline, so the it would be great for small group studies or Sunday School classes. I bought several copies, and plan to give them away. I personally placed one in the Pastor's hands last week. Great read!

"The Closet" wasn't what I expected at first. The reader is lead to believe one thing, and at the last minute everything is changed. On it's own, it can be a confusing read,but as a part of the series it works.Give it a read along with the other two titles in series; "The Bargain" and "The Revelation"

I just started reading the new book by drummer Kenny Aronoff, "Sex, Drums, Rock 'n' Roll: The Hardest Hitting Man in Show Business," which Kenny definitely is. He's a tremendous drummer, has played with just about everybody, and hails from my old stomping grounds of Indiana University. (In fact, he used to play with some pals of mine in a jazz-fusion group called Streamwinner, which gets a few shout outs in the book.)My favorite story from Kenny's new book concerns his first recording with John Cougar Mellencamp, the "Nothing Matters and What If It Did" album. Kenny had only recently joined the band, and was used to playing very busy jazz rock fusion on a big kit. (That's how I initially heard him back in Bloomington -- he was a monster!) Anyway, the band flies out to LA to record with legendary producer Steve Cropper (of Stax Records fame), and it was Kenny's first time in a big-time LA recording studio. Unfortunately, Cropper only had a limited time to record the album, and Kenny just wasn't cutting it. So they "fired" Kenny from the recordings and brought in session drummers Ed Greene and Rick Shlosser to cut the rhythm tracks.Instead of getting all pissed off like anyone else would have, Kenny took this as a humbling and a learning experience. He begged Mellencamp to let him stay in LA (they were going to fly him home) and attend the recording sessions as a fly on the wall, which he did. Kenny learned a ton from the session pros and applied it to his own style going forward, turning a negative experience into a positive one.I don't know too many other musicians who would have sucked it up and taken it the way Kenny did in that situation. This solidifies my opinion of Kenny has not just a great drummer but a true stand up guy and role model. (FWIW, I interviewed Kenny for my Complete Idiot's Guide to Playing Drums book, and he was a joy and an inspiration to talk to. As busy as he is, I'm glad he found the time to talk to me!)In any case, if you want an inside look at the music business from a legendary drummer's point of view, check out Kenny's book. It's a good read!

This book is incredible so far, and Kenny's stories are a lot of fun to read through!! He goes into great detail about his time with Mellencamp, and gives a unique perspective into what it means to be a session player. Kenny is probably the most qualified drummer to give that perspective, and the book proves it!I say "so far" up above because the publisher has REALLY screwed something up: pages 213-260 are missing and 261-308 are repeated! This makes the book an incomplete product, and obviously, not worth the full price. I have not sought a refund yet, but intend to do so.I would still recommend buying the book, but maybe give the publisher a call first to see if they fixed the problem. I ordered this in the fall of 2016, so maybe they have addressed the issue by now.

I read a ton of musician books and this one is up there. Well written, exciting and you do not want to put it down. When I heard John Cougar as a teen I was immediately drawn to the drum sound. Very few people understand how important a drummer is and how it’s the backbone of the band, music and sound. Kenny had the it factor back then, despite the Friar Tuck hairdo he had going on you could tell he had the IT factor and stood out. Really it was John Mellancamp and him that were the band and the vibe.I doubt no one has been on more albums, songs, hits, gold records than Kenny. Chances are most people do not know him but I can guarantee they have heard a song he played on.Look at Jack and Diane or Hurts so good, sound simple but its not, each beat, sound, drum has a place and its perfect. Like the stones, you do not focus on Charlie Watts but without him you probably would not even listen to the Stones as they would be nothing.Kenny is the backbone and soul to so many hits. He is my pick for my next solo album!

As a musician and a lover of drums, Mr. Aronoff has given this reader a rare window on how much discipline and motivation it takes to literally master this incredible instrument. This is a true musical history which starts in the womb where Kenny heard his twin brother Jonathan's heartbeat. It left an imprint. His relationship with his family is a loving one. They provided him with a platform and encouraged him to play. In truth, they could not get him to stop. He learned by sheer determination. It was when he first saw Ringo Starr that he knew the sounds of rhythm would be his calling. While reading I was fascinated by how he believed a band should be formed like a team. Like his family. Good drummers are very hard to find. When he first auditioned for John Cougar Mellencamp. However, Mellencamp did not think he was the right drummer for the band. He soon found out otherwise. He played on John's best recordings while he and bassist Toby Myers played amazingly together. A brilliant team.When he left the Mellencamp band he soon got calls from everyone. In my opinion, the more simplistic (Mellencamp) a tune is, the harder it is to play. Especially, to keep the sound and beat in the pocket. Kenny, I could say is the Mozart of drum playing. He can play anything. As a student at UMass he played classical percussion and of course tympani's. While playing with an orchestra it is valuable to count out the rhythm with precision. Kenny's big mistake was that he came in at the wrong time which left him humbled and embarrassed in front of his peers. A lesson learned but a valuable one. He later went to Indiana University, Bloomington and the rest is musical history. I will not tell you everyone he has played with because you wannabe drummers or lovers of other instruments need to read this.Not only is he a highly disciplined player, like above he is a humble one. If you are into sleazy autobiographies on rock stars this is not for you. Kenny is a musician's musician. And he has shown it by giving lessons to students while recording with Mellencamp and being creative with his art. I was also fascinated how much he loved Bloomington. And how he described it. A young boy who idolized Ringo Starr from the East Coast ends up in the heart of the United States, Indiana, and becomes one of the most famous, versatile drummers of all time. What made me teary eyed was when he was granted his childhood wish to play with Ringo Starr. He is so versatile that he has played rock, country, jazz and symphony. He is an unbelievable and rare artist and from what I read a very kind and giving man.Neil Peart in the Forward said it best: "Hold on to that thought for when you get to John Mellencamp's acid comment about Kenny and his "ambition." As if there is something wrong about wanting to play with everybody in the world--and then doing it. As Dizzy Dean said, "It ain't braggin' if you can back it up. Kenny Aronoff can back it up."

Simple and to the point. Very clear diagrams. I like this book and take it with me when I go practice. I have another book on banking and it has too many diagrams and heavy on description.

This was very informative, the principles here work both in theory and in practice. And without the simple diagrams I may never have developed these kicking and banking skills.I recommend this book to anyone wanting to add kicking accuracy through a system to their repertoire.I will refer back to this book often.

Anyone looking to learn to bank and kick must own this book. I've looked into many different systems and this one is very easy to understand and to the point.

Great book! I'm from Seattle and I think it's so adorable. It's rather small in size and the recipes are delicious!

Having been to Pike Place Public Market and a huge fan of Pacific Northwest seafood, this was a no-brainer. The recipes are organized in sections. The first describes a history of the market. The next section is about fin fish, then shell fish, and then the odd kettle section talks about tuna, squid, and seafood combination dishes, to name a few. The recipes are easy to follow and the results are worth the effort and turn out extremely well. I bought this book along with Ray's Boathouse: Seafood Secrets of the Pacific Northwest and Pure Flavor: 125 Fresh All-American Recipes from the Pacific Northwest. So when all three arrived, I was in my glory--three Pacific Northwest cookbooks to complement my Wildwood Wildwood: Cooking from the Source in the Pacific Northwest cookbook. I did a tasting and made seven of the recipes the weekend after receiving the books. Everything was great, and I felt like I was in the Pacific Northwest again -- not in Jersey...well...

I was pleasantly surprised by Jacobs' balanced, informed perspective. He is not using the premise to clown or poke fun, like I had initially thought; nor is he claiming to have any kind of psedo-scientific, spiritual transformation. Jacobs begins the book as a skeptical agnostic and ends it as a skeptical agnostic -- just a more informed and worldly one.I read this with a long list of questions: everything from "what's the deal with mixed fabrics?" to "how can any woman belong to anything that's so expressly sexist?" and Jacobs impressed me by acknowledging everything succinctly. This book isn't just anecdotal, but impressively dense with research. He explores everything from hasidc judaism all the way to baptists and the bible belt, getting an intimate look at the beliefs and percieved benefits of people from all different faiths. I would have liked him to continue his Abrahamic investigation into the quran instead of stopping at the news testament. But perhaps, coming from a jewish family, he felt unqualified.All in all, I definitely got what I was looking for in this book: an objective perspective on many of the beliefs and rituals of modern Americans and the high-lights of an impressively exhaustive investigation of the bible. I think it should be mandatory reading for everyone, regardless of their personal faith.

I heard about this book a couple of years before I got around to purchasing and reading it. I know a lot of people who claim to take the Bible literally and who claim to live their life as closely to the guidelines set out therein. Well, the author did just that and his results are wildly different than the people I know.While trying to follow the Bible as literally as possible, A.J. Jacobs discovers contradictions, some explicit, others springing from differences in translation and interpretation. He has difficulties incorporating the realities of modern life (like having to carry a chair with him so he doesn't accidentally sit in a seat a menstruating woman has been in; it's unclean) and it is only due to the eternal patience of his wife that he is able to live within some of these restrictions (although she draws the line at a rule that states he can't touch her at ALL for weeks after her c-section delivering their twins; spoiler: he suspends his "quest" for about a month after their birth).The challenge the author undertakes in this book is something I, myself, would NEVER attempt, but I did find his account illuminating. Like him, I think a lot of people seek to live the best lives they can by following tenets set out in the good book, but being human, fail to varying degrees. Jacobs's quest did lead him to being a kinder, more thoughtful person, so even as a self-described agnostic, by the end of his journey, he felt it was worthwhile.I don't want to go too in depth about my views on religious; my personal beliefs aren't relevant to this review. It's a well-written, engaging, funny account that answers a lot of questions I had about how would one have to live if they really took the Bible as literally as they said they do. His conclusion confirmed what I suspected: it's impossible to follow ALL the rules literally and EVERYONE cherry picks.But don't take it from me. Read this and be yourself, enlightened. It's not going to make you a true believer (it certainly didn't affect my beliefs in any way), but it might increase your understanding.

For the past two months, I’ve been talking about this book to just anyone who would listen. No matter what the other person might be talking about, I could easily find a way to bring up some little something about A.J. Jacob’s entertaining, yet educational, book.Somehow the author manages to shed light on many religious topics and practices without being offensive, preachy, disrespectful, or overbearing. Regardless of the person he’s spending time with, Jacobs always comes away more knowledgeable and open minded. Jacobs met with rabbis, Amish, and Red Letter Christians, to name a few. About the latter, they adhere strictly to the direct quotes of Christ, and Jacobs learned that although Christ didn’t say anything about homosexuality, he had a lot to say about giving and sharing with others.I often hear people say something is biblical and that it must be followed. I also hear the opposite: something is NOT biblical and shouldn’t be a behavior or ideal to subscribe to. Jacobs tried living all the teachings, laws, and commandants in the bible and showed that it couldn’t be done. A person might spout off the story of the good Samaritan, for example, and yet be prejudiced as all get out. Jacobs was earnestly attempting to follow the Ten Commandments when he told his little boy his English muffin was just that, an English muffin and not a bagel like the tiny tot wanted. His son had a tantrum, causing the author to wonder if lying is okay for such occasions.Jacobs’ year of living as closely as possible to biblical laws, commandments, and principles changed the way he now thinks about things. He’s more grateful and mindful these days, and he completed the project with a greater sense of the spiritual side of his nature; he also feels more peace and appreciation. While Jacobs remains agnostic, I love his statement about his newborn’s eyes: “I spot what a nun I know calls ‘God’s DNA.’ Those eyes are alive.”Read this book. It’s funny, educational, and honest. It’s based, by the way, on the Revised Standard Version. His favorite verse is Ecclesiastes 3:1, a scripture that I often remind myself of.
