Barren Lands: An Epic Search for Diamonds in the North American Arctic

From Library Journal

Diamonds spell adventure, and their lure is timeless, as evidenced by this compelling book. Magazine writer Krajick (Natural History, Newsweek) leaves few stones unturned as he presents not only a "diamond rush" in Canada's Northwest Territories during the 1990s but a history of one man's pursuit of this gem. The familiar names are here, including Charles Tiffany, Frederick Kunz, Cecil Rhodes, and the ubiquitous DeBeers. So, too, are the diamond mines scattered across the globe in India, South Africa, South America, the United States, and Canada. Scandals and scams have long been a part of diamond lore; the Great Diamond Hoax in 1872 Colorado rates a fascinating chapter of its own. The chief character featured throughout is Canadian Chuck Fipke, an eccentric, obsessed prospector and principal in the Lac de Gras/Ekati diamond mine (currently in operation in Canada's Barren Lands). A combination of arctic climate, corporate spies, and inexact geologic science, mixed with human greed, grizzlies, and prodigious amounts of insects and alcohol, turns the last half of Barren Lands into a suspenseful thriller. Miners, geologists, and rockhounds will be spellbound, but the appeal will easily extend to general audiences as well. This book is highly recommended for all libraries. From Booklist

When we think of treasure hunters, we tend to think of gold or silver, but diamonds are rarer than either, and humans have been hunting them for half a millennium. Two such diamond hunters are Charles Fipke and Stewart Blusson, the prospectors who struck it rich in a region of Canada's Northwest Territories called, appropriately enough, the Barren Lands. Their adventure is the centerpiece of this diamondhunting story, which combines excitement and danger, disappointment, tragedy, and the kind of luck that changes your life forever. Fipke and Blusson became extremely wealthy men; others who spent their lives in pursuit of the elusive glittering mineral were not so fortunate. Krajick, a journalist who reported on the Barren Lands diamond rush for Discover magazine, is a smooth storyteller with a novelist's ear for dialogue. But these aren't flamboyant fictional characters living out madeup lives; they're real people, and this is what really happened to them. A can't-miss for fans of reallife adventure. Fantastic story! It was informative and riveting up until the very end! I got too excited halfway through and lent it to my mother to read, and then had to wait two days for her to finish it and give it back to me so I could finish the last couple of chapters. It's currently sitting on my brother's nightstand! I learned so much about diamond formation and prospecting, exploration, and what it's like to do something like that for a living, and I mean a real sense of having that passion and dedicating your life to it. The history was extremely well written into the story and provided a lot of insight; the chapter detailing the battle of Bloody Falls still haunts me. I would recommend this book to absolutely everyone. Whether they have an interest in mineralogy or not, they will by the end of this book!

When I started reading this book I was immediately impressed by the author's long involvement in reporting on Canadian diamonds and the fact that he interviewed and was in repeated contact with nearly every important person in this story. This gave him an overview and perspective that none of the people involved could possess. Just as important, the author understood and could communicate the fine details of minerals, exploration, rock units, glaciation and the other geological elements clearly and accurately. The book was easy-to-read, interesting and hard to put down. One of the best-told geological stories. If you are only going to read one book about Canadian diamonds or diamond exploration, this is the one.

Interesting true story of a persistent geologist whose somewhat harrowing adventures eventually pay off handsomely. Krajick, who was not involved, provides much detail about disagreements within the characters' personal relationships, reads like a grouchy geologist's diary. Would have given it 5 stars had it been 50 pages shorter without all the grumbling.

Although I was quite familiar with the exploration in the Canadian mountains for diamonds, I didn't know the nitty gritty of the two men who were responsible. Barren Lands in one of the most exciting, adventure stories of factual material I could have imagined. The author, a science writer, seems to have done his research and documenting of it in a full on bibliography, quite well. It was a situation where I already knew the ending, but not the beginning or the middle. Now I know "the rest of the story," the famous saying of radio personality, Paul Harvey.

Recommended by a geologist friend. I recommended it to my wife who has a love/hate relationship with diamonds, and to my fiends who have read Isaacson's book Steve Jobs as part of understanding the spectrum of Autism and Asperger's in making progress.in society. The power of singular purpose and intense focus is wonderful - provided it is aimed or I should better say provided it happens to be aimed in the right direction. I thank the gods that neither Steve Jobs nor Chuck Fipke was born in a place or time where they could lead a nation.

This is a well-written, interesting book that teaches a lot about the history of the Canadian Arctic and the search for diamonds around the globe. I particularly liked the history of Canada's "Barren Lands" in the north from the 1500s onward. I also learned a great deal of earth science and geology. It was fun to read, and kept my attention throughout. I particulary enjoyed the maps in the front of the book and referenced them often. I also appreciated the index in the back; with so many people overlapping and involved in diamond exploration, I had to reference the index frequently to remember who was who across the global history presented. The chapter notes in the back of the book are also quite good; I wish they were footnotes on the page as many were interesting. As I will be teaching a course on this area and will be going to Yellowknife shortly, I thought the book gave a great overview of the area. It also convinced me to add a few lectures on geology.

Thank you so much . very good book and a awesome story . keeps you going to the end . Blessings

A very well written account of the excessive desire of the search for diamonds and the eventual discovery of diamonds in the Great White North of northern most Canada.

In case you're not sure ~ This is EROTICA and not meant for children. This is the second in a series. Although this is a good follow-up to the first story to Fifty Shades of Alice in Wonderland, I didn't enjoy it as much as the first.I enjoyed how it started, but at around Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, I was bored. Don't get me wrong, there's sexy scenes, the writing style is enjoyable, but I think I kept comparing it to the first story, which isn't fair. I couldn't pinpoint where I wandered off, except to say that perhaps this one felt, um, rushed, obligated, distracted or forced? Anyway... I definitely recommend the first book and this one is written in the same style. It does pick up, but I never actually felt what I felt with the first story. I wavered on my review from okay to I like it, and went with I like it because, well I have every intention of re-reading it, especially once I have the last installment of the trilogy and see how it fares then. All in all, I would say read it ~ Especially if you read the first installment and enjoyed that, and if you haven't read the first one, I do recommend buying that one, that is a GEM! There is a third installment ~ not sure when that's coming out, but I'll be buying that as soon as it's available ~ That's how much I enjoyed the first story.

If you are looking for a quick, quirky, erotic short book to read, this isn't a bad choice. There is a lot of steamy, erotic sex happening in Wonderland which is the main focus of what you will read. There is an overriding message of acceptance/tolerance and realizing we shouldn't judge others. There are moments when the author is banging you over the head with it and even says it in the story, that does get a bit old based on the approach but I did have fun journeying with Alice through the Looking Glass for a few hours of escapism from the daily grind. I did get this book for free during a special promotion, not sure I would have read this if I had to pay for it.

Love the sexiness, the sarcasm, and twist of fairy toes all rolled into one hell of a sexual fantasy. You will laugh, come and squeal in pure ecstasy.

OMG is all I can say, I thought I was going to explode with all sexual tension I was experiencing reading all the Alice books

This is much better than that OTHER 50 Shades crap. It's a tad political, but in a satirical fashion. The puns are priceless and the rewriting of Lewis Carroll (using most of his characters) is spicy and enticing.

Some may argue that this is not a romance. I would argue very differently. There is a heroine and a hero (even if we don't see a whole lot of him). The couple must overcome an obstacle in order to be together (Alice's closed-mindedness). And of course there must be a HEA - and is there ever!!Alice's adventure begins with her favorite white rabbit again and she is instantly thrust into a new and exciting world. The book (which is quite glad to be an ebook instead of a regular book you might trip over if it happened to be lying on the floor) is filled with wonderful puns and even occasionally makes a joke at its own expense. Yes, the book knows it's a book. The style of writing is priceless and so very much fun to read. Alice must learn to be more open minded about people before she can become a Queen and return home.We see a few of our favorite characters: Humpty Dumpty, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, and a very unusual version of the Jabberwocky - all presented with their own very unique twist. If you haven't read this series, I would definitely tell you to add it to your "must read' list. The only downfall is there was supposed to be a third book that has not yet been released.

This book delivers an awesome story line as far as bondage goes. My favorite part of this book was the shoe foot fetish part of the story. But I will not spoil this one, because if you read it you'll know why. But other than that. It's just delicious in my opinion.

Definitely not recommended if you're just looking for a romantic read with slight BDSM/fetish themes. This story was all over the place in regards to the many types of erotic behavior it explored. There are many things in this story I wasn't really interested in (Dweedle Dee and Dum) but for the most part there was something to enjoy in every encounter Alice had (imo).I honestly really love the cheeky way this is written so that it somewhat mirrors Carrol's original text. I actually found myself laughing a couple of times at how DuChamp reflected his prose through her own, with VERY differing content!I appreciated the underlying storyline which essentially is that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, everyone has their own kink, and how can you know for sure if you've never tried? Lewis' and Alice's relationship takes a dramatic turn in this story given that, not only do they find out some interesting fetishes each other likes, but they then have to learn how to deal with those desires and be honest about them. All in all I liked all of the scenes in this story but my favorites were with the bondage master, the "flowers" and the White's Queen's sex shop. I was also very thrilled to see the hatter and the hare make another appearance and thought the Jabbercocky quite creative.I will definitely be reading the final installment of the story.

Very well done book! Love, love, love the history pages! I am excited to work through this with our children!

This is NOT a resource aimed at K-5, and whomever assigned it there is nuts. It is geared towards the middle grades, and is meant to be filled out mostly at home, not in the classroom, while watching the games. Looking over it, it is not really aligned to any CCSS, Maybe reading comprehension, at a stretch. The "math" included is counting and ordinal numbers - maybe those pages are the K-1 parts - It includes small maps that kids an color in - world map which is NOT big enough to label, and US map which is big enough. I'm happier with a printable booklet from TPT that was free. Very disappointing because I was counting on this for lesson plans for literacy next week. Now I need to go find something else.

I read about 5 books a month and I am pretty well-versed in Stoic philosophy. I have also read Bertrand Russel's classic, The Conquest of Happiness so you might say that I was familiar with many of the themes in Derren Brown's book, and that is why, perhaps, I purchased it without expecting too much from it.The book has completely exceeded all my expectations. Sometimes we can read about an issue, or hear a point discussed without fully grasping it. Then someone else makes the same point and we experience a sort of epiphany. That was the case with me in reading Happy. There was nothing I had not already heard in one way or another, but Brown, through his warmth and humility and exceptional choice of language, introduced me to new insights which had previously escaped me.Look, there's a reason I read Lucretius and Epictetus and Seneca and Marcus Aurelius. For the last few years I had been traversing, to quote Dante, "una selva oscura, che la via diritta era smarrita." Derren Brown's book is exactly what I needed to read. My mood has changed significantly. Dare I say it? I am happy. Thank you Derren.

I bought the Audible version on a whim a few days ago after hearing Derren Brown on BBC radio. I didn't know much about him other than his being a magician, but thought it sounded intriguing. I absolutely love this book and am about to listen to it for a second time. It is the perfect antidote to self- help books but at the same time has been helpful to me in my interactions already. Have recommended it to friends already.

This was a great book to read. I’m interested in stoicism and Browns understanding of it makes it enjoyable to read. This isn’t a self help book. It actually discredits those and doesn’t have a secret formula by which to make yourself happy. I’m re-reading the book just to make sure I haven’t missed anything. 😀

One of the best books I have ever read. It is absolutely magnificent, extremely well researched, beautifully and wittily written, capable of changing your view of the world. I recommend it with all my heart.

I wasn’t sure what this would be like - a celebrity’s view on philosophy? It is very good, well written and full of insight and well researched information. Self deprecating but he identified my foibles perfectly. Well done Derren.

Super recommended. Well written, insightful, educational and funny. A fresh perspective on a tired theme. Love this genius.

Gifted a dozen copies of this so far. An absolute gem from the culturally important and most thoughtful Derren Brown.

Self help is limited, even in therapy - you must help others help you.To be happy, is to play an exhausting role a child has that leads them into tantrums.I learned from Derren's research how to nor be unhappy, since more or less everything is absolutely fine.

In 2002, the law firm for which I worked was involved in the Dollar General debacle, helping clean up the mess after the company restated financial statements due to massive accounting fraud. I didn’t know much about Dollar General at the time. But I do remember that a firm partner told me that one of the company’s directors had succinctly described their business model to him. “We sell [crap], to poor people.” Cal Turner, Jr., has written this book to explain that business model and his part in it."My Father’s Business" has three threads. It is a history of Dollar General as a small, scrappy business. Then it is a history of Dollar General as big business. And intertwined throughout are elements of religious tract (the title is a play on words, the relevant “father” being both God and Cal Turner, Jr.’s own father, the original Cal Turner). Actually, despite the title, the religious elements are fairly light—Turner is a devout Methodist, a group not given to aggressive evangelization. But to his credit, he is not apologetic about the importance of his religious belief, something refreshing in today’s publishing environment. I’m a bit put off by some instances of how he applies his faith, but as Pope Francis says, who am I to judge? It’s the early history of Dollar General that interested me most, since my own post-law background is as entrepreneur. Most books about entrepreneurship are totally clueless, or a pack of lies. Charles Koch’s "Good Profit," for example, is an awful, worthless book. Peter Thiel’s "Zero to One," with its focus on monopoly and reek of private equity money, has nothing to do with the gutter struggles of real entrepreneurs, the type that made America. Turner experienced that gutter struggle firsthand—really, his grandfather and his father more than him, but the business was still quite small when he started working at Dollar General, in the early 1950s. While my experience is in manufacturing, and Turner’s in distribution and sales, many of the same challenges arise, and they are not challenges understood by anyone who has not run a business on a shoestring. Turner, or rather his father, did, and Turner does a good job of conveying what that’s like, with anecdotes both amusing and heartbreaking, such as his father spending every Saturday night for many years calling every store manager to figure out what cash he would get the following week, so he could decide which vendors’ bills to pay.In fact, cash flow is the single biggest concern for any real entrepreneur, and stores that keep inventory, like Dollar General, tend to face the most challenges. As a result, real entrepreneurs are always worried about bankruptcy, which can happen even if a business is profitable. Cal Turner, Sr., used to half-joke when he got a good buy on some goods that “If I have to declare bankruptcy, I won’t be embarrassed to tell the judge what I paid for this inventory I can’t get rid of.” Similarly, Turner mentions that his grandfather, Luther Turner, “bought a farm and put it in [his wife’s] name so that if the company went under, all of them could return to the land and start over.” For years I kept all my assets in my wife’s name for the same reason—so I could collapse our business and we would not be left destitute, but could begin again. To this day, my thoughts revolve around the need to prepare for that possibility. This sort of thing, necessary because of the enormous risks, is the norm among entrepreneurs. Nor do most people realize that entrepreneurs can’t borrow money like you read about in the news. If they can get a loan at all, entrepreneurs pay high interest rates where big companies pay zero interest rates, thanks to the government, and the entrepreneur also has to personally guarantee the loan, so he’ll be personally ruined if the company can’t pay.But most other people, working eight-hour days, simply don’t understand any of this, the risks and the amount of work and sacrifice required, at any level. Nor, of course, do politicians, like Elizabeth Warren with her infamous “you didn’t build that” screed. She, like probably 98% of the people in Congress, has never built anything, or taken any material risk, in her entire life. Reading this short book would be a good requirement for any politician before taking office. The simple fact is that a very small group of people are the producers of most of the economic value in a society; without them, that is, without their drive and organization, output would be vastly lower. That’s one thing Ayn Rand got right, and when you read Marxists claiming that workers can run their own factories, you know you are reading someone with no actual experience of business.Cash problems went away pretty early in his career for Cal Turner, however, since the company went public in 1963. From this point on the book was less interesting to me; it became a chronicle of ever larger acquisitions, along with discussion of family troubles, as Turner, by his account, just had to get rid of his father (right after his mother died), as well as his brother, and leave himself in charge. No choice in the matter, you see. Jesus told him to do it, in fact, when He said that every branch that doesn’t bear fruit should be pruned. Maybe so, but I’d be curious for some Rashomon-type viewpoints. Turner also seems addicted to “management training” and “strategic planning” which I think is dubious in most cases, along with “individual value statements,” which are dubious in all cases. (I could never understand at business school why people who had never run a business were not only allowed to teach “strategy,” but were held in great respect.) On the other hand, Turner was by the 1970s running a very large company, quite far-flung, so perhaps external training was helpful to weld people together into common action. In many places, Turner describes a number of completely illegal practices under the securities laws that the company engaged in, including overt lying over decades. Yet he claims he was completely shocked when in 2002 it turned out that due to his complicity and negligence (not that he admits it), the company’s books were fraudulent and he was forced out—really, fired. Nor does Turner mention that in 2005 the SEC sued him and four other officers for accounting fraud, and he personally paid a fine of a million dollars. Instead, he complains “Everybody seemed to have a stake in making us look bad. The process was terribly injurious and punitive, and a lot of people were getting hurt.” He moans about how unfair it was that someone could accuse a “values-based leader” like himself of, gasp, “cooking the books.” (He also talks about his “time in the barrel at the SEC”; I don’t think he, or rather his ghostwriter, looked up the origin of that metaphor.) It’s tiresome and lacks any sense of humility.Turner could afford the fine. He’s a billionaire, not that he mentions that in the book either. (He does seem to leave out quite a few things in which the reader would be interested; I’m sure there’s more that I’m just not catching.) Nor does he mention the ancient Christian question of the salvation of the rich. This is a question that concerns me, though. Between Christ’s injunction to the rich young man to sell all that he had and give it to the poor, and the admonition about rich men, camels, and needle’s eyes, I should probably lie awake at night. On the other hand, my fallback position is that of Zacchaeus the publican. After all, he got direct approval from Jesus to only give away 50%, and he was an actual fraudster, so I figure 50% is a ceiling, not a floor. Between that and pointing to my wife and saying “I’m with her,” I hope to still gain admittance from Saint Peter. Wish me luck!Anyway, my guess is that the primary reason Turner wrote this book is that he, and the rest of his family, have been mostly erased from history by today’s Dollar General. If you go to the Wikipedia entry for the company, it’s all about boring details after Turner’s firing. He, his father, and grandfather, only get a few sentences. After 2002, the company was soon turned into an arm of private equity (then eventually went public again), and their PR firm doubtless scrubbed the entry. Wikipedia most definitely does not mention any part of the episode that got Turner fired. But despite Turner’s best efforts to put a shiny gloss on Dollar General’s business, it still has the slightly dirty feel of all businesses that fall somewhere along the line between catering to, and taking advantage of, the poor. Dollar stores are, after all, the same basic type of business as pawnbrokers and payday lenders. On the other hand, Dollar General today, and throughout its history, does seem to be remarkably free of leftist cant—you can’t find any on their current website, and Turner certainly offers none. That’s a rare treat today in the age of social justice warrior corporations. And aside from serving areas that often lack stores (although I am curious if the company, like WalMart, also pushes aside existing local business), the company has for decades offered the real service of upward mobility, since anyone competent can climb the corporate ladder. True, I don’t think Dollar General is especially Jesus-approved, as Cal Turner would have it, but it’s a decent business that provides value to the poor in consumer goods and jobs. That is a niche that has been very good to Cal Turner, and, also, for the most part, been a boon to many poor areas of America. On balance, Cal Turner should be proud of his life, and if you like this type of book, his story is worth reading.

I have a bookshelf full of half-read books, but this is not one of them. My Father’s Business reads more like a conversation with the author. Cal Turner will give you lots to think about, and you will likely find yourself reading it again some day.

Got this book on Wednesday June 20th and will have it finished tonight, June 22nd. The picture of Cal Sr. driving his mothers 1955 Pontiac sums up what took this mom and pop store to a whole new level. It was fun, raw selling and hustling, good old fashioned unsophisticated business. Mind you, business was a whole lot easier in the 50's and 60's, but you have to admire Dollar General for being a force all these years. Almost bought their stock, but I would never want to compete with Amazon or Walmart.

I found "My Father's Business" to be interesting and engrossing, as it shed light on the astonishing growth of Dollar General and its transformation from a seat-of-the-pants family business to a Fortune 500 public company. Along the way, family relationships needed to give way for the business to fulfill its mission. The missional, indeed religious, dimension of the book helps sets it apart, as does its ease of reading. I was impressed by how forthcoming Cal Turner, Jr. was in telling his story and that of Dollar General. I now know a good bit more about the DG store I drive past nearly every day.

This is a truly inspiring story of small town values and working hard to achieve the American Dream. Cal Turner tells this fascinating story through his own eyes and takes the reader on an exciting journey of how his family built the Dollar General brand into the monumentally successful company it is today by focusing on what really matters - serving the needs of others and providing everyday value to customers with honesty and integrity. If you are looking to be inspired professionally and personally, My Father's Business really hits the mark.

My Father's Business is a very helpful look at the personal and corporate growth that took place inside one of America's most successful retailers. Cal Turner's honesty is refreshing and inspiring.I was particularly inspired by the way Cal Turner's faith and sense of purpose guided his leadership at Dollar General. There is a lot of wisdom in here. I recommend for anyone who wants to see the intersection of faith and work.

As easy a read as you'll find. Cal Turner built a fortune 500 company by putting his customers first. From the decision to cut out advertising in order to reduce prices to refusing to sell cigarettes and beer because they weren't in the customer's best interest, it's hard not to impressed by many of the bold decisions that Turner took during his time at the helm of DG.

My Father's Business is a great story about a family that gave IT ALL to their amazing business for such a simple mission, "Serving Others". It is refreshing to have such a successful CEO open up and share personal stories that molded him, his family and the business that he led to huge success. The book starts and finishes with a genuine message from the author about how important his faith played a role in his life and how he hopes this book helps the reader find their own path to success in carrying out their "Father's business". Must read!
